I think that's a really good point @85reasons .I'm reading Ultra Processed People by Chris van Tulleken and he is making the same point.
That some people have a genetic predisposition which means our bodies react in a particular way to some processed food which means we can't control how we eat it. I haven't finished it yet but the theory seems to be that if you have the genes and the environment is right, you will end up with obesity. He talks about it being a disease and something that is totally not an issue of willpower, he basically says that dealing with it by willpower is impossible. This resonates with me - I have no issue with having a glass of wine and leaving the rest of the bottle, but biscuits and crisps are a totally different issue and its whatever I tell myself, I cannot stop eating them.
He doesn't talk (so far) about how drugs like MJ interact with this, but I wonder if the reduction in food noise is effectively the drug interfering with the processes in our bodies that make us crave the food. It does make me think though that avoiding processed foods might be the path to long term maintenance.
