Continuing Mounjaro Thread 11

Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

MedExpress 2.5mg and 5mg. £149.99. 7.5mg £169. Use code STARTNOW. Ask for other codes if that doesn't work.
The Family Chemist 2.5mg and 5mg -£149. 7.5mg £169.
Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 5mg
Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. 7.5mg £189
Asda 2.5mg and 5mg £184. 7.5mg £189
Boots £219 +
Chemist4U £179 +
Superdrugs

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

Tried to swap over to MedExpress for my mounjaro but they're refusing me saying my BMI is under 30!

Well it wasn't when I started and it's now 27.1

Has anyone had any luck moving to another provider instead of sticking with the one they originally started with, and if so who and how?

I hope this isn't going to be a thing for folk trying to shop around🥺

Hi All

I've had a weird week. Very flat one minute and emotional the next, ended up scoffing biscuits that were in the cupboard on Tuesday which is the first time since starting MJ that I've had that loss of control feeling. Also feeling very cold and lacking in energy.
Tomorrow is jab 15, still in a bit of a stall but the overall trend is downwards so I'll take it. Am going up to 7.5mg tomorrow as have been on 5mg long enough, fingers crossed I don't feel too rough as I've plans for Saturday night.
It's great to be sub 90kg but I am ready to see a BMI of under 30 now and it still feels too far away. It's that feeling of 'great, you're doing well but that was just the first hill, you still have several mountains to climb' - lighter than I've been in 17/18 years but still a long way to go. All my trousers are to big for me (apart from my skinny jeans inspiration pair) but I don't want to spend anything on clothes until I've shifted another stone at least, so will be living in dresses for the time being.
The appetite suppression from MJ is remarkable, am still eating the same healthy meals I used to with my family, but am comfortable eating much smaller portions and I no longer snack on top of the 3 meals a day (evening snacking was my biggest downfall alongside wine).
For those early on in your MJ journeys I know it's hard to have faith in the process, especially if like me you tried wegovy/ozempic unsuccessfully and worry about failing to lose on MJ too, but those stalls and slow losses are all part of the journey and we will get there if we stay committed to this.

Foxlover46 · 30/05/2024 17:36

I've just taken the first one now , was a lot easier than I thought so thank you for the advice today :)
This is a worry though , if they won't send the higher dose pens due to lower bmi. Surely they expect it to drop as we lose ?

Youdontevengohere · 30/05/2024 17:53

Hi all! I posted on the last thread as I took my first injection last Thursday. On Saturday we decided to book a last minute holiday and have just arrived back. I thought as we’d been away I wouldn’t have lost much in my first week, but just weighed in and I’ve lost 2.2kg!
I made sensible choices, chose soups and salads when we ate out, didn’t give in to the ice creams etc my children were having and perhaps most significantly didn’t fancy alcohol at all, so I didn’t have any. This is unheard of for me!

livingwithpmdd · 30/05/2024 18:01

@ihatecoffee @Parsley1234 I moved over to MedExpress last month but my bmi is still over 30 still. I did have to send my previous box/prescription.

Others have said in previous threads that they had to put a higher weight in the form to pass the first check then send info about being below it with the pic of the box/prescription.

lurkylurk · 30/05/2024 18:01

@Sabblue

Only codes for the family chemist that seem to work:

SOCIAL5 (Gives £5 off)

TheFamilyChemist (Gives £10 off, may only be for first time customers)

SARAH5 (Gives 5% off)

lurkylurk · 30/05/2024 18:02

@ihatecoffee

Try emailing them directly, it may be that the form automatically rejected you but I know they will take people switching over under BMI 30 as asked them this previously.

At the risk of sounding stupid, but how do they know what your BMI is ?

imnottoofussed · 30/05/2024 18:13

Because you have to put your height and weight in the form when ordering

whatisontk · 30/05/2024 18:58

1st 24 hours done. So surprised how well its went. I took my first jab after dinner last night and then drank an electrolyte with magnesium drink. Felt a tiny bit nauseous in the middle of the night but managed to sleep through that. Felt absolutely fine all day. I can feel a small bit of hunger in the background like I know I should eat.

I've managed 1000 calories today and feels fab all healthy choices aswell.

Parsley1234 · 30/05/2024 18:59

@livingwithpmdd thank you so much x

ObsidianTree · 30/05/2024 19:10

lurkylurk · 30/05/2024 08:39

@ObsidianTree

Get an insect repellent that is 20% Picaridin (also called Icaridin or Saltidin). It’s natural, unlike Deet, won’t melt your glasses unlike Deet and really works. I get Skeeter syndrome which is a bad allergic reaction to mosquito bites so I really need to make sure I don’t get them and it’s the only thing that really works.

Thanks for this. I started using citronella wristbands but they haven't helped at all. So been using some gel repellents etc but I'm rubbish at constantly applying it. It's monsoon season so probably a lot more of them about at the moment.

I'll have a look at the ingredients tomorrow of what I've got and look at buying things with these ingredients.

ObsidianTree · 30/05/2024 19:14

ThirdStorm · 30/05/2024 08:56

@ObsidianTree I use Mosquito Milk to prevent bites, absolutely brilliant stuff.

Thanks 😊 I was definitely rubbish this holiday at sorting out mosquito repellent. Last few hols I didn't get any bites so assumed the repellent bands worked! This time they didn't /or actually loads of Mossies about so I've been bitten loads!

PomchiK · 30/05/2024 19:28

Just took my third dose. Does anybody else get really light headed when injecting? I thought I'd be used to it now 😆

Lost another 4lb this week, so 8 lb in my first two weeks

Bananabuttons · 30/05/2024 19:49

I’ve just taken my first dose!

I was absolutely bloody shitting myself, like I was injecting heroin or something. Bit of an anti climax but just planning a couple of pints of water and an early night.

will report back….

Thanks for all the moral support.

incidentally, I’d thought about doing this in March/April, talked myself out of it because it seemed unbelievable that just anyone can get it. Then I read that AIBU thread and felt very pissed off and thought about posting to see if anyone had any sensible info to report, and then I found you amazing lot ❤️

3wDavid · 30/05/2024 19:58

Amazing losses and NSVs everyone!

I don’t know who needs to hear this but you need those 1300/1400 calories a day. Make it a priority to get them in. The body is a remarkable thing, you feed it well, it will lose the extra weight. Starving it, however, only makes it go into “oh shit we may never eat again” mode and it starts storing what little you feed it for the “hungry days”. All of this is to say, it’s important to eat well during this journey. You really don’t lose more if you eat less, at least not in the long term. Hit those calories to stay in deficit, hit that protein goal, the rest will follow. 🫶🏼

Mmmm yes I know that, I think you may have missed my point?

As far as I know my provider can’t see me or my scales, so I’ve lost very little weight…….

thebigmove21 · 30/05/2024 20:19

I would really value some opinions please. I hit a bit of a weight loss plateau over the last few weeks and haven’t really lost any weight during the 2nd 2 doses of 5mg and the first 2 of 7.5mg. It seems to have finally started moving again now thank goodness.

I am due to order the 10mg dose (as I now only have 2 doses left of 7.5mg) and I am tempted to stay on the 7.5 as it seems to be working again but also don’t want to plateau again, so maybe I should move up to 10mg? Has any else experienced this and what do you think?

Get the 10mg, count clicks and do a 7.5mg dose for your first dose of the pen and then reassess in a weeks time, is what I would do.

ShiftySandDune · 30/05/2024 20:27

Hi everyone. Nice to see a new thread. I’ve just had my second injection. I lost 2kg in my first week. First two days I had total appetite and food noise suppression and found it hard to eat. Days three, four and five I had about half to two thirds, then days six and seven I didn’t have much. I feel more prepared for that over this next week and I am looking forward to continuing this journey.

Yes, if there's standing water around you'll get mosquitoes a few days later! If I get bit I get huge fluid-filled blisters (that then later scar) and it can make me quite unwell too so I have to be really cautious and the picaridin stuff really works for me. It's an extract from black pepper and It makes them unable to detect you so they don't even land on you. You do have to make sure you don't miss any bits though!

This year I also bought one of these as not only do they handle the itching but someone who also gets Skeeter Syndrome said they handle that reaction too if you can get to the bite fast enough as it denatures the protein that causes the reaction:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B089GRH43R

Haven't tried it yet but they get excellent reviews

Yeah, it's not

It's literal thermodynamics

Flapearedknave · 30/05/2024 20:29

Yeah, it's not

It's literal thermodynamics

It is still, of course, thermodynamics, but if you go too low your body slows down your metabolism and makes you feel lethargic so you don't do anything active that would waste energy. Yes, you will of course still lose weight if you're in a deficit but your body won't immediately go back to the faster metabolism you had when you stop dieting so you can then regain weight a lot more easily and faster, there have been studies dome that showed it can last up to a year:

I've had a bit of an incident with my Voy delivery today. The parcel was addressed to me, but the actual prescription had a different name. Their live chat was very efficient and they told me to dispose of the incorrect medicine and they'll send a replacement. If I keep the new one in the fridge, that'll do me for next month, won't it?

If I wasn't getting a free dose I'd be more cross about the whole situation! My name is very unusual (I'm probably the only person in the world with the combination of my first and last name). It makes me uncomfortable to know that someone else has probably been given a prescription with my name on it.

Edited

What mg pen did you get and what is the expiry date? Yes it will do for a future month but most suppliers say that if you don't place a second order within six weeks of the first you have to start back at 2.5mg again. But you can keep the pen sent in error as part of your stockpile and use it when you don't need to order any more Mounjaro.

I wouldn't be thrilled that your prescription got sent to someone else but I doubt anything will happen because someone on Mounjaro knows you are also on it. And you got a free pen so... result!
