Mounjaro / Wegovy with > 5st / 30kg to lose

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 26/04/2024 08:41

I know, yet another Mounjaro / Wegovy thread, but I wondered if anyone else with a lot to lose would be interested in a safe space to chat. The other threads (both the long-runner and the newbies) are great but I can’t believe how relatively little some people have to lose. I know it’s all relative, and two stone can be a lot of extra weight on a small frame, and it’s great that they are doing something for their health before they end up in the same position as me… but in my more ungenerous moments I think about what a dream it would be to be ‘only’ two stone overweight, and wonder how many posters I will see come and go while I plod along.

So, if any of that resonates and you don’t think I’m an utter cow for having these thoughts, come and chat! I will start. I don’t feel comfortable sharing my current weight but am happy to say that my starting BMI is over 40 and I have 7.5 stone / 47 kg to lose. I’m very tall but there’s no kidding myself that my current situation isn't very unhealthy indeed.

I’m halfway through my second week on 2.5mg Mounjaro and so far I have lost 8lb. I have not really had many side effects apart from occasional loose stools, but I am also not experiencing the significant appetite suppression that others describe. Right now I am finding MJ a useful tool to take the edge off while I count calories and keep an eye on my macros to keep my protein intake up. A very welcome effect is that it has completely removed any desire to drink alcohol, which is helpful as a fondness for wine is part of how I got so fat in the first place. Nevertheless I am looking forward to moving up to 5mg and hopefully experiencing more appetite suppression.

Anyone else?

I've just placed my first order. I'm pleased to be starting but also aware that if this fails I am out of options.

Keen to learn any hints and tips for succeeding on this journey

Thanks for replying @KeepingUndercover My symptoms when I try to move up are severe vomiting and diarrhoea for 2/3 days. It’s horrific. I hoped it would be a one off but I tried again and it was the same. I don’t have 2 days a week to spend in bed! I spoke to a pharmacist at med express and they told me to go back down to 2.5mg (obv they don’t condone counting clicks and making up my own doses but I’ve done it anyway!)

I hoped I might have some suppression on 3mg but literally nothing. I wondered if doing 3mg and then 2mg 5 days later might work but I’m so worried about the sickness

sorry I know there’s no advice anyone can really offer as I seem to be in the minority. I just feel quite lost with it at the mo moment and trying to find a way to keep going

Edited

Sorry to hear your are struggling 😔

Maybe you can take an anti-sickness medication and I think someone has suggested co-codamol for help with diarrhoea. Not ideal to take lots of medication but it might get you over the worst of the side effects in the earlier part of the week until you can settle on 5mg without having to take anything. Might give you a fighting chance to stay on MJ?

Welcome and good luck! 🤞 Lots of great advice on this thread 👍🏼

RagzRebooted · 03/06/2024 19:25

@Ghilliedu I was doing 3.75mg every 5 days for a few weeks and I worked out it's very similar overall to 5mg a week, so I'd suggest doing the 3mg every 5 days and see how that goes.
When I finally went up to 5mg in one go past week, it was fine and I've actually had fewer side effects than ever so I think it's settling.

SakuraTrees · 03/06/2024 20:19

Please no one take codeine for diarrhoea. Use Imodium/loperamide.

SakuraTrees · 03/06/2024 20:24

A little update. So on top of me feeling awful 99% of the time I'm now losing a lot of hair. It's because I'm losing weight too fast and not eating enough. I've just finished week 16 and stats are
SW 20st
CW 15st10lbs
GW 11st
Total lost 4st4lbs
I'm going to try having more protein shakes as I really can't eat much and see if that helps. If anyone has others suggestions I would be grateful.

Stuckinarut79 · 03/06/2024 20:58

Im three doses in , no real side effects - some cramps in the night if I eat a late heavy meal, a bit of constipation if I skip water. It feels different, less food noise, I struggle to plan shopping, cooking as I don’t know what I fancy but when hunger hits and it does I’m still struggling to not overeat. First week I was testing it to see if I could still eat and didn’t change much. Second week I’m making the conscious decision to eat better and to stop and let the hunger pass - it is easier than before MJ.
I’ve been taking it every 6 days to get me to 5mg sooner as I feel I’m not a super responder and I’m going to need a higher dose to get the full effect, but it’s a marathon not a sprint and I’ve hope it’ll work better with the dose going up.
so far I’ve lost a couple of kgs so not loads but it’s more than I’ve managed in a long time the scales have gone up and up after a crash diet last year, I’m all for steady and sustainable.
but it’s an odd feeling to not be obsessing with food 24/7, I just need to work out how to get the middle step between a) not hungry, don’t fancy anything to b) I need food now, whatever is quickest! I’m trying to plan and eat regularly so I don’t get to b!

KeepingUndercover · 03/06/2024 21:01

@SakuraTrees what dose are you on? Could you go down a bit if your suppression and side effects are that bad? Is it that you physically can't eat much or do you just not fancy eating/feel nauseous at the idea? If the latter, forcing myself to eat small amounts regularly helped me with that.

I'd be thinking dose reduction though, or whether the weight loss is worth the feeling awful and hair loss.

KeepingUndercover · 03/06/2024 21:03

@Stuckinarut79 sounds like you might be best just planning your meals in advance and maybe even prepping them up? That way you don't have to be inspired, if it's Monday this is what's on the menu.

SakuraTrees · 03/06/2024 21:14

@KeepingUndercover I'm on 1mg of Wegovy and I've felt awful since day one. I'm very sensitive to the medication. I don't want to stop because being overweight was really impacting my mental health.
The reason I'm not eating much is because of nausea and vomiting. I get full very quickly. And every single day I'm constantly gagging. I can mange the bad side effects to get myself to a healthy weight which is my priority but I would like to stop the hair loss. The photo I've added is just from today. Plus there was more not shown after I styled my hair.

@Alicewondersalot thanks, the pharmacist I spoke to said to take anti sickness tablets so I’ve got some now but I’m too scared to even try it now!

@RagzRebooted thank you, it’s good to hear that someone has done similar and it’s worked out. I don’t mind if it takes me a bit longer to move up if it means I can stay on it and keep losing weight. I’ll try another 3mg on Thursday and hope it builds up.

thanks for the support, don’t know what I’d do without these threads!

KeepingUndercover · 03/06/2024 21:27

@SakuraTrees I wonder if mounjaro might suit you better, I think there’s people who shifted who found they had fewer side effects.

I’d definitely up your protein as much as you can. And I’d try speaking to whichever prescriber you’re getting it from and see what they suggest, they are meant to be monitoring us.

I’ve found the clear protein from MyProtein great - just like drinking flavoured water. I particularly like the raspberry mojito and I think they have a sale on at the moment 👍🏼

Is it too late for me to join the crew?

I just started ozempic on Sunday on a 0.25mg dose. I pretty much woke up without an appetite on Monday morning. God I hope it lasts and that this works out.

I also have 30kg to lose. My friends have encouraged me to take 'before' photos. I'm not planning on showing anyone but OMG, I was shocked at the size of me!

Some of your success stories are really encouraging. Wishing everyone luck on their journey to good health.

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 04/06/2024 16:41

Never too late @mmgirish - most of us are here for the long haul! Welcome.

@VelociraptorsVelociRapping Thank you!

You know I live overseas now so I now think in kg. I had no clue that 30kg was nearly 5 stone! 😩

SakuraTrees · 04/06/2024 18:23

@Alicewondersalot @KeepingUndercover thank you both for the advice.
I do have the vimto clear whey which I'm not a fan off but I'll have to try some other flavours. Maybe get a mixed pack to try

GreyFinch · 04/06/2024 20:46

Hi! I’m so grateful for being directed to this thread and I look forward to reading through and getting caught up.

I started MJ on 24th April at the SW of 276.8lbs (BMI of 42.1)

Currently 257.5lbs (BMI 39.2)

Total loss so far: 19.3lbs

Having a lot of weight to lose is so daunting and seeing people on the other threads getting to ‘normal’ BMIs and under 10st has been quite triggering for me if I’m honest.

I’ve gained weight steadily over 8/9 years, takeaways and wine are my biggest weaknesses

Since starting MJ my desire for wine is non-existent and even the thought of a takeaway makes me want to vom.

it’s amazing to see people’s progress on the other thread, I can only imagine being in that same position at some point in the future but I’m glad I’ve found this thread with people here for the long haul!!

I’m taking my 3rd 5mg dose tomorrow morning so will see what next week brings!

R4ch402 · 04/06/2024 21:00

So happy to have found this thread. I’m aiming to lose 8 stone however I’ve been on Mounjaro since 3rd March and have only lost 10lbs. I start 10mg on Thursday so hoping I see some improvement.

KeepingUndercover · 04/06/2024 21:00

Welcome @GreyFinch. The big thread is full of nice people but I do find it helps to have a space for those of us with a long journey ahead. I had a very similar BMI to you when I started. Well done on what you've done so far. Have you had side effects or mostly plain sailing?

Thank you @KeepingUndercover ! It’s been mostly smooth sailing in terms of physical side effects. I have still struggled mentally but I tend to when dieting. I often downplay my successes/losses and a voice tells me to give up and that I’ll be fat forever! 😂 I seen the kitchen roll analogy on the other thread and that has made such a difference with my frame of mind.

I think it’s harder in a way when you’re bigger as you don’t drop down clothes sizes or see a physical change at all for a while after you start! I certainly haven’t seen much difference after almost 20lbs but I’m hanging in there!

KeepingUndercover · 04/06/2024 22:33

It definitely takes much longer to see results. I've finally bought clothes in a smaller size and I can see I've lost weight. But I'm also still a size 20 so it's not a big change in appearance yet. It's great of course, but it feels like a slog.

Alicewondersalot · 04/06/2024 23:09

I sent in the same photo I used to confirm my weight at the beginning of this journey for my most recent prescription because there is not much difference yet despite losing over a stone! 😂
