Elsiid · 02/08/2022 14:02

A caricaturist sounds like a bloody nightmare to me.

Maireas · 02/08/2022 14:06

I have to say, @Elsiid, that I would avoid them at all costs.....

Runwalkskijump · 02/08/2022 13:55

It's someone who draws cartoon pictures of you and exaggerates certain features

I know what a caricaturist does.
I am just questioning their presence at a wedding reception.

alotoftutus · 02/08/2022 14:09

We had a caricaturist at our wedding and it was really popular. My husband is in the military and they always have one at their functions so we decided to do the same. It was great fun

You'd have to wonder.
Some people's idea of "fun" amuses me.

lot123 · 02/08/2022 14:43

Actually I'd quite like a caricature. Provided they're not too cutting in emphasising your 'unique' features such that you spend the rest of the evening in the loo crying as over the depiction of your jug ears and massive nose.

Yes, it's the latter scenario that would concern me!

We didn't do favours but we got married smack bang in the middle of the pandemic and Boris announced the day before that masks were compulsory in church. So we quickly found someone local to print our names on masks to hand out in the church. We Absolutely did not expect them to be used again but it was a little bit of entertainment and making the most of a shitty situation

happyharpy78 · 02/08/2022 15:59

@Maireas It won't be compulsory! He'll sit at a table, he wont go round forcing people to have one if they don't want. They are very popular in theme parks etc so obviously some people like them even if you wouldn't.
Anyway, it was just a suggestion - each to their own. I certainly wouldn't go to a wedding and slag off the favours whether they were to my taste or not.

happyharpy78 · 02/08/2022 16:00

Thank you @lot123 , that's reassuring after the slating by some posters!

Best on? Wedding was at a vineyard about 1 hour 15 drive out of our city. We were transported by bus. Favours on the way out - mini bottle of wine with straws and a surprise food van with mini burgers and hot chips.

This sounds lovely, but isn’t this part of the reception rather than “favours” ?

Nope. Nor would I. I've made the point that it's not to my taste, but if it's your taste and you have the money, go for it!

Johnnysgirl · 02/08/2022 16:11

Not relevant to the thread, really; but what this "hot chips" thing that seems to be catching on? Aren't they just chips?
Nobody eats cold chips, so the hot is completely redundant.

pmsl that this is a good reason to have something at a wedding reception.

It's bloody irritating. I used to raise an eyebrow at the American 'hot tea' before I realised that it is of course distinct from 'iced tea' - fair enough, I suppose. Bit like the Texan who asked me for a cider in our licensed premises, and was then livid that it was boozy - the menu should have said 'hard cider', apparently. But somehow making a virtue of something which is supposed to be characteristic of the foodstuff in question, sounds almost precious.

Johnnysgirl · 02/08/2022 16:24

So he wanted apple juice?! Like Americans aren't familiar with that Confused

LetHimHaveIt · 02/08/2022 16:29

I think 'apple cider' in the US is between 'hard' cider and apple juice - so it's non-alcoholic but not sweet. Given that the menu said clearly 'Biddenden Cider - 8%' I think he was being a bit of a dick. IIRC, the word 'poisoned' was used 🤦‍♀️

In the US “cider” is sweet apple juice, sometimes hot and spicy.
”Hard cider” is the alcoholic stuff.

Ah, I see.
Still no excuse for hot chips, though Wink

”Hot Chips” as opposed to “Potato chips”? If we’re talking American English. Or maybe “hot chips” to imply they’re fresh rather than lukewarm chips that have been hanging around a while.

Johnnysgirl · 02/08/2022 17:00

Well yes, I know what hot means. Unless you apply it to every other component of the meal as well it's just nonsense.

Misunderstoodagain · 03/08/2022 20:48

I'll be doing handmade candles made by a social enterprise for learning disability. Everyone will be staying over at the venue so will be putting these in the rooms per couple/ family. Really wanted a charitable donation plus I regularly buy these candles and they are brilliant.

Same! Finding brown sauce in your handbag is what happens after an absolute night at Wetherspoons, not a wedding!

The only favour I’ve had worth putting in my handbag was local gingerbread, nicely wrapped. It was the perfect “arrive at hotel sozzled, need to soak up the booze” snack. And no clutter like a tube of sand or a caricature to take home and not know how to get rid of.

It’s really making me giggle to see all the posters who claim they definitely have seen the best wedding favours ever…. At their own wedding. A jar of brown sauce and a bread roll are brilliant 😆
