Icelandic eruption and the weather

Thought it might be interesting to start a thread on this.
eruption in iceland

It seems to be a fissure eruption and after some reading this afternoon I think it is unlikely at the moment to be putting up large quantities of ash into the atmosphere, this sort of eruption does not seem to be the explosive sort. If it starts to, then we could see some particularly spectacular sunsets.

Worries are though that it might trigger Katla volcano which could be potentially pretty devestating, not only to Iceland but also could affect weather on a global scale. Large eruptions have historically caused global cooling and influenced weather patterns.

hopefully fears end up being unfounded

This may be of interest to some: Earthquake activity at Eyjafjallajokull is plotted in real time, with locations and magnitudes.

As the neighbouring volcano is much bigger, potentially much more destructive and has been expected to erupt for at least the last 20 years the
Katla seismic stations are also interesting to look at. Katla is very well instrumented. It's last big eruption was in 1918, prior to which it had regularly erupted every ten years. Temperature measurements have consistently shown it to be near ready to erupt for the last twenty years, but there's no evidence in these graphs that that is going to happen just yet. Still you never know.

Since I'm both playing host to 4 friends who can't get home, AND waiting for my DH to return from a business trip, I'm rather hoping it doesn't go this time either, although that would undoubtedly be rather cool...

I'm near Glasgow and we've got a covering of brown dust over our cars today, similar to what you see in Spain and the like. Not a day for hanging your washing out.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/04/2010 14:39

ireland/parts scotland some opportunity for flight

Can you explain those charts a bit OYBBK? he red line and green dashed line ones

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/04/2010 14:41

teleconference being organised monday for service providers and eurocontrol for reviews etc would allow for airspace to be open as soon as safety allows.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/04/2010 14:44

dashed lines show risk area of ash at that height red is general risk area (I think, not quite sure on red) yesterday there was another coloured dashed line showing a diff risk area for a different height.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/04/2010 14:45

(sorry, listening to conf at moment and typing out info one handed)

OP posts:
MerlinsBeard · 16/04/2010 14:46

so teh red is where the cloud is and the dashed is where the risky areas for ash to go is?

I saw the yellow line yesterday too.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/04/2010 14:46

no major changes for next 24 hours, no idea beyond that

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/04/2010 14:51

I'm not quite sure MOM. sorry!

airspace ban extended to 7am. looks like policy is to review after each forecast and extend ban by 6 hours.

My parents were supposed to be flying to Cyprus tonight from Birmingham. They've re-booked on a flight next Wednesday but I told Mum what you were saying earlier OYBBK, that that might not be guaranteed with the weather looking the way it is until the middle of next week.
It's all such a mess.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/04/2010 19:02

You are right Petunia it is a mess and nothing can be done about it

latest forecast no change up to lunch time tomorrow. Fortunately Scotland still looks to be in a clear window. Hopefully they will be able to make the most and start to get people home.
