Icelandic eruption and the weather

Thought it might be interesting to start a thread on this.
eruption in iceland

It seems to be a fissure eruption and after some reading this afternoon I think it is unlikely at the moment to be putting up large quantities of ash into the atmosphere, this sort of eruption does not seem to be the explosive sort. If it starts to, then we could see some particularly spectacular sunsets.

Worries are though that it might trigger Katla volcano which could be potentially pretty devestating, not only to Iceland but also could affect weather on a global scale. Large eruptions have historically caused global cooling and influenced weather patterns.

hopefully fears end up being unfounded

met office warnings showing area of ash at aviation level.

weather looks ok for us all at moment in terms of rain - bit of light rain saturday. not sure how ash will influence forecast

weather dominated by high pressure for a few days - good news from pov for rain, not great for aviation.

Our water (and the entire community) have private water supplies from open streams on the hills.
It is really dark and gloomy here, feels like it will rain soon and I am worried.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/04/2010 10:12

fortunately it seems to be at the 55000 ft level I think. rain clouds tend to be at the 6500-20000ft level. So, I think at the moment you are ok. Hopefully advice will be issued if it becomes necessary.

honestly is ok atm fiofio, biggest problem with any light rain today is that your washing will get wet.

Is it true that UK air space is pretty much closed down all day? DH due to fly home paris-manchester this evening...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/04/2010 10:35

nothing more satisfying than fast drying washing. (can't believe I said that)

It is true. He should make other plans looking at the ash forecast, I don't think it will be better tomorrow.

I flipping love you OYBK.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/04/2010 10:42

you can run your own ash model:
choose eyjafjoll

very busy though and not got a clue which parameters to run!

Eurostar doesn't really figure highly in your thinking when you live in Lancashire. Even if he used it, he'd still not be able to get home this evening.

Worse places to be stuck than paris.

mankyscotslass · 15/04/2010 10:45

Grimma, they said Manchester airport would review the situation at 13090, but tbh is looks fairly settled for the day so I wouldn't hold out much hope.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/04/2010 10:45

whois

apparently there is a nasty odour at top end of Scotland. This won't be the main ash plume, but dirty air coming over from Iceland will be smelly.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/04/2010 10:50

Grimma, how long can he stay there before it becomes a problem? Until this high pressure moves off the situation is unlikely to improve. Certainly is set to dominate into mid next week (its the same weather pattern that gave us our severe winter. unusual and stubborn)

mankyscotslass · 15/04/2010 10:52

oops 1300!

Ooh so am I...I had the same thing but with holly leaves (green ones) from the tree at the bottom of our garden Monday- it was a beautiful day and only a gentle breeze.

No other tree's or bushes were affected.
