Icelandic eruption and the weather

Thought it might be interesting to start a thread on this.
eruption in iceland

It seems to be a fissure eruption and after some reading this afternoon I think it is unlikely at the moment to be putting up large quantities of ash into the atmosphere, this sort of eruption does not seem to be the explosive sort. If it starts to, then we could see some particularly spectacular sunsets.

Worries are though that it might trigger Katla volcano which could be potentially pretty devestating, not only to Iceland but also could affect weather on a global scale. Large eruptions have historically caused global cooling and influenced weather patterns.

hopefully fears end up being unfounded

Oi, where's our update?

Thank you.

GrimmaTheNome · 16/04/2010 21:35

Blimey. I'm starting to feel that the Dunkirk spirit should be rolled out and a flotilla of yachts go and fetch stranded families and businessfolk from the beaches of France

prettybird · 16/04/2010 22:24

Have a look at this live webcam.

It shows the ash etc billowing up from the volcano (which is under a glacier).

BTW - 'cos it's live, you won't see anything once night has fallen - but at the moment (dusk time) it is looking spectacular.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/04/2010 07:13

Grimma, embarrasingly I keep getting the urge to whistle Colonel Bogey every time I read of people making their way home.

ok morning update. Sadly the clear Window for Scotland closed earlier than last nights models suggested it would. UK is once again a no-fly zone.

latest ashcast no improvement at all today.

very nice link pb

I see that they've managed to get an analysis - 58% silicon dioxide - glass in other words.

GentleOtter · 17/04/2010 07:27

Further analysis We are right in the middle of attempting to get the field pH correct and dh was wildy enthusiastic as he thought we were going to get a gazillion tons of free gafsa and be able to grow monster crops.

Thank you for all these brilliant updates BadKitten, they are far more relevant than the BBC.

Why does is look foggy / misty outside in north hampshire? I'm convinced we're being swallowed up by an ash cloud .

Or it might just be extra cloudy.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/04/2010 07:44

oh good link GO

you are welcome btw

went oddly misty here just now, morning mist I'm sure but it did startle me for a moment! mostly lifted again.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/04/2010 07:51

mist down again. have installed an ash detection system outside: a white piece of paper and a bowl of water

meglet - not uncommon under a high pressure but I am a teeny bit about it.

ok, my analysis of the mist: water droplets.

there is a teeny very very light layer of grey dust on the car.

such an idiot yesterday - on those charts I've been linking to the red line also denotes the shape of risk area at a particular height.

Just saw an interesting interview on News24.

An expert was saying that he does not see much potential for improvement over the next week, and that unless the volcano stops erupting there is the strong likelihood disruption could go on for months due to the prevailing weather conditions.

He expected there to be windows of opportunity but over all felt that unless the volcano stopped erupting ash, that this could be long term.

I'm watching on webcam too. It looks like there has just been a largeish eruption!

I'm not sure about food prices, though am sure they will take the first chance thay can to raise prices.

I've got a washing out (greater manchester)

Meglet · 17/04/2010 12:01

The sky is blue in hampshire so I'm going to blitz some washing just in case. All the cars outside looked dusty, but we might just be slatterns so that's no saying much.

Non-food items come in container ships don't they?

This could be a useful lesson in food air miles for lots of us. I assume the supermarkets have it flown in every day.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/04/2010 12:05

fortunately a fair bit of food is ship freighted, so I think we don't need to be too concerned about that, just might not have so much choice!
its air freighted medicines that needs watching I'd have thought.

washing is out. will be washing car windscreen with jug water before we set out so that wipers dont scratch the glass.

I was thinking that most of the airfreighted food is inessential stuff so matters less to us, but would it be redistributed to locals or just wasted?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/04/2010 17:30

latest ashcast

sorry guys, no improvement yet

Ponders - on bbc webpage one company talking about their fresh fruit and veg just rotting.
