Icelandic eruption and the weather

Thought it might be interesting to start a thread on this.
eruption in iceland

It seems to be a fissure eruption and after some reading this afternoon I think it is unlikely at the moment to be putting up large quantities of ash into the atmosphere, this sort of eruption does not seem to be the explosive sort. If it starts to, then we could see some particularly spectacular sunsets.

Worries are though that it might trigger Katla volcano which could be potentially pretty devestating, not only to Iceland but also could affect weather on a global scale. Large eruptions have historically caused global cooling and influenced weather patterns.

hopefully fears end up being unfounded

Eyjaf seems to have stopped erupting. Just steaming. not quite sure what that means.....

Is your DH going to be able to get away on Monday, OYBBK? I thought I heard on News24 last week, that if anyone was affected by the strikes, they could either have a refund from BA or the company were going to pay for tickets so that people could travel with another airline. I think they're hoping only a small number of people are going to be affected by cancelled flights and not being able to travel at all.

It looks ok so far
main thing is that he comes back ok

Ah, 'tis good about tomorrow. Guess it could be a 'cross that bridge when come to it' situation for getting back (will he be attempting to get back in the middle of the strikes?)

Waswondering- glad you were able to travel safely with only a small delay.
OYBBK- At least the volcano seems to be cooling off now (for the moment!) My Mum was saying yesterday that her cousin's husband is a geologist, and he's been to this unpronouncable troublesome volcano (lucky man!) to take a look at it. He says that it's almost a certainty Katla will erupt soon, they just don't know exactly when!

It looks rather peaceful on the webcam at the moment!

Oh yes, your sister's wedding. Fingers crossed that nothing disrupts your travel plans.

Hulababy · 23/05/2010 22:10

Yes, it's nearly her wdding now - it's the Wednesday. DH is worried he might not get home; I just want to get here for now - and my sister onbviously is desperate to get there.

Interesting how quiet Eyjaf has become. Hope it lasts.

Did Mr. OYBBK get away OK yesterday?

How long is he away for? (have memories of DH going to the States 3 times, for 10 days each time, 12/13 years ago, pre-children and when there was no Mumsnet! It was grim!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/05/2010 12:55

Comes back friday. It will be so good to see him. We did skype each other a bit ago and it was great. Could tell him my good news face to face

Been keeping an eye on the volcano that caused all the trouble earlier in the year! There are some pictures of the changes that have occurred as a result of the eruption here. (Need to scroll page down a little.)
