Icelandic eruption and the weather

Thought it might be interesting to start a thread on this.
eruption in iceland

It seems to be a fissure eruption and after some reading this afternoon I think it is unlikely at the moment to be putting up large quantities of ash into the atmosphere, this sort of eruption does not seem to be the explosive sort. If it starts to, then we could see some particularly spectacular sunsets.

Worries are though that it might trigger Katla volcano which could be potentially pretty devestating, not only to Iceland but also could affect weather on a global scale. Large eruptions have historically caused global cooling and influenced weather patterns.

hopefully fears end up being unfounded

I'm kind of musing on the sites of earthquakes that seem to form in a line from the volcano towards Tindfjallajokull. I know everyone says about Katla going next but I'm wondering if there's some underground link with Tindfjallajokull, up towards Hekla (and that had a minor quake during the night as well.)
Just some small thoughts really....

OYBBK, not sure what time, I think the Florida flights from here tend to be morning though. We met the family in Sainsburys this mornnig, she is so worried and the little boy was so upset.

Petunia, I noticed that quake near Hekla this morning, when was the last time she blew?

mankyscotslass · 16/05/2010 16:50

Just answered my own question, the eruptions at Hekla look to have been every 10 years or so in the recent past. I think the last one was 2000.

petunia · 16/05/2010 16:52

February 2000 and it's one of Iceland's more active volcanoes. Just reading the The Wikipedia entry and noticed this bit, "In January 2010 there were reports of patches near to the summit not covered with snow[15] and that the lava chamber pressure had reached levels similar to those before Hekla last erupted." (I'd looked at the Wiki entry before this but hadn't scrolled down to that rather frightening bit!)

mankyscotslass · 16/05/2010 16:55

Just read that Hekla can potentially erupt to VE5! Katla I think is up to a VE4.

petunia · 16/05/2010 18:30

Eeek! The whole place always seems to be on the move! (Admits that the seismology section of the Iceland Meteorological site is one of the first things that I look at each time I come on the computer!)

Me too Petunia!

What have you decided? looking at the latest chart I think northern airspace will stay clear. (but I was surprised that Manchester etc has been open this morning)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/05/2010 11:00

no, not somewhere I'd want to be stuck atm!

have a good flight.

Waswondering- hope your flight went off without delay yesterday.

Picture of rather a lot of volcanic ash here!

Was just taking a look at one of the webcams (something I spend too much time doing!) and thought I saw a flash of lightning in the clouds around the volcano. Got all excited! I should get a life really!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/05/2010 11:46

stunning footage close up

mankyscotslass · 19/05/2010 13:08

That is incredible! Nature is awe inspiring.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/05/2010 15:28

It is, utterly astounding footage even if perhaps the cameraman is a bit bonkers!

OP posts:
petunia · 20/05/2010 08:00

That footage is amazing, although I'm torn between 'Wow' and 'That cameraman is maaaaaaad!'

The whole place seems to have gone into 'earthquake overdrive' overnight and this morning!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/05/2010 11:52

blimey - it has! I wonder how usual that is for Iceland.

petunia · 21/05/2010 09:43

It seems to go in phases, with them having great numbers of quakes and then it calms down again for a day or two. I guess if you live there, you must get used to the ground having the shakes every couple of days!

petunia · 21/05/2010 16:03

Seems to be kicking off again (with a few in the katla area too.)

mankyscotslass · 21/05/2010 18:03

Yes, there are quite a few in the Katla area too. They have definetely increased over the last few hours.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/05/2010 18:59

oh crumbs. Hard to believe they are all false readings.
dh flies out monday. on ba. wonder when I will next see him?!
