Icelandic eruption and the weather

Thought it might be interesting to start a thread on this.
eruption in iceland

It seems to be a fissure eruption and after some reading this afternoon I think it is unlikely at the moment to be putting up large quantities of ash into the atmosphere, this sort of eruption does not seem to be the explosive sort. If it starts to, then we could see some particularly spectacular sunsets.

Worries are though that it might trigger Katla volcano which could be potentially pretty devestating, not only to Iceland but also could affect weather on a global scale. Large eruptions have historically caused global cooling and influenced weather patterns.

hopefully fears end up being unfounded

Watchng the debate and frankly - an ash cloud is more interesting.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/04/2010 21:24

that forum more interesting than debate.

link on dealing with ash fall nicked from there.

remember though we are unlikely to be dealing with that kind of quantity - tis just interesting reading, but far more relevant for icelandic inhabitants down wind of volcano.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/04/2010 21:26

actually, I feel irresponsible for posting that link, please dont feel thats the kind of thing we will be dealing with.

to clarify as to why we have seen some aircraft today - airspace is closed to IFR (instrument flight rules) aircraft, so under control of air traffic control. It is open to VFR (visual flight rules) aircraft - those flying outside of airtraffic control, like small piston aircraft, gliders, helicopers (in the right place/height)

Arse. Does this mean I have to go into the garden in my pj's and bring my white washing in off the line?

Sod it, if it gets covered in ash I'll wash it again. I'm cosy now.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/04/2010 22:45

lol, we bought ours in on the basis that I didnt want to post a 'how do I get volcanic ash out of my washing?' thread tomorrow.

Had a bit of a nap. The only good thing about this is that I am stuck at an airport where they care about you. We have lots of food, water, juice and blankets. Would never happen at Heathrow.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/04/2010 07:19

now thats good.
hope you are ok this am.
will be back in around 5 hours to look at situatiom. much of uk airspace closed til 7pm bst at least, can't quite work out what will happen then. some of the north seems to come out of it for a bit at least, but unsure about the south or tomorrow when I think upper westerlies may develop.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/04/2010 07:27

gives an animation created last night - you can see the difficulty in working it out. fairly subtle changes make a big impact on our airspace.

Looking at 0100 tomorrow now.

Dh chats to people who were supposed to be flying in from Singapore and America for the Derby on Saturday.....they are gutted.

Did any one manage to see the sunrise today? Was it any better than usual?

GentleOtter · 16/04/2010 09:08

The sunrise here was just ordinary which was disappointing. I was hoping for something extraordinary. (rural Perthshire)

mankyscotslass · 16/04/2010 09:11

I think there are one or two flights from Glasgow today, things maybe looking up for Scotland.....

It's dull here (Greater Manchester) I thought I might see a film of dust on the cars this morning, but nadda.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/04/2010 10:15

hopefully manky

todays ash forecast

don't like the way it is starting to backfill over us through the day. It also appears to be concentrated at a lower level

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/04/2010 12:31

I don't think its looking very good for travel for a while - maybe some windows of opportunity but unfortunately, the weather looks to be generally unfavourable with upper level north-westerly winds being forecast next week til the end of next week, it may centre it more over us again.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/04/2010 12:37

small window of opportunity being reported at manchester bringing people home.

OYBBK- I glanced at this thread when you started it nearly a month ago and also read about the volcano on the BBC website but thought, 'well we won't hear much about that and it'll die down!' I never thought a few weeks on that it would affect the UK so much!

GrimmaTheNome · 16/04/2010 12:59

But that presumably depends on whether its clear at the end they're departing from.

GrimmaTheNome · 16/04/2010 13:04

Oh I see, they said on R4 they're sending some empty planes out of manchester, presumably so they are then placed to return people.

God, it must be a logistical nightmare for the airlines.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/04/2010 13:07

latest ashcast

if you check out the parent directory here just after 1am/7am/1pm/7am you get the latest prediction.

scotland and then northern uk seem to have a good window forming until tomorrow am at the least.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/04/2010 13:08

neither did I petunia. impacts on airtravel had not occurred to me.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/04/2010 13:09

manchester window closing now.

OP posts:
GrimmaTheNome · 16/04/2010 13:18

Brian Cox on R4 just pointing out that without volcanoes we wouldn't have an atmosphere so they ain't all bad
