Icelandic eruption and the weather

Thought it might be interesting to start a thread on this.
eruption in iceland

It seems to be a fissure eruption and after some reading this afternoon I think it is unlikely at the moment to be putting up large quantities of ash into the atmosphere, this sort of eruption does not seem to be the explosive sort. If it starts to, then we could see some particularly spectacular sunsets.

Worries are though that it might trigger Katla volcano which could be potentially pretty devestating, not only to Iceland but also could affect weather on a global scale. Large eruptions have historically caused global cooling and influenced weather patterns.

hopefully fears end up being unfounded

Apparently west scotland airspace is closed too

WhiteNoise · 04/05/2010 09:35

should have read the link first

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/05/2010 09:57

lol - don't worry, am always doing that!

oh dear.

It will be interesting to see which way the airlines/caa go with this.

I've been keeping an eye on the seismic activity round the volcano and its been a bit more active over the last few days.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/05/2010 17:24

scroll down for handy graphic of where the 'concentrated ash' is predicted to be.

from above report:

"The spokesman said that lessons had been learned as a result of April's ash cloud, which grounded flights for almost a week.

"We now know a lot more about tolerance levels of volcanic ash in aero-engines," he explained.

"Although there are still no-fly zones of dense ash, we know that in areas of less concentrations, aircraft are safe to fly." "

What a ridiculous statement to make. Its all about probabilities and whilst tolerances may have been revised, its not down to a new understanding, its down to revised safety acceptance levels.

And here we go again!

petunia · 04/05/2010 20:52

Looks like there's been lots of seismic actvity in the last few hours.

I've also been glancing at this site (posted about earlier in this thread) and it mentions on this page (post 2484) that katla had a 'significant quake' last Wednesday.

mankyscotslass · 04/05/2010 20:52

And the Icelandic Met office seismic monitoring site is indicating even more activity round the volcano this evening.

It may get worse over the rest of the week.

mumofmonsters · 04/05/2010 21:26

I have been following the seismic activity recently too

Am not sure why seismology and weather interest me so much

mumofmonsters · 04/05/2010 21:35

seismic activity in last 48 hours

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/05/2010 22:13

mom - we have something in common

dh goes off to the states in a couple of weeks. wonder if he'll be able to go (and more importantly come back)

BUt the differnce is OYBBK - i just steal what you say blag my way thru the charts and you actually know what they say!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/05/2010 10:13

lol - I am still very very much learning and do nick ideas from weather forums when I'm stuck

Does this show that katla's had another quake? Is that red dot in the right area for katla?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/05/2010 20:25

I think so petunia. I read on another forum that it is at the right depth for Katlas magma chamber. I hope that is just speculation...

did you see iceland metoffice discussion saying that Eyjaf is likely to continue at full force over the next few days?

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/05/2010 20:29

looking back at the earthquake page the marker around katla seems to have gone. perhaps it was an anomalous reading?

OP posts:
mumofmonsters · 05/05/2010 20:33

this one any better?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/05/2010 20:35

looks like the reading under katla has gone. coulnt see it in the charts either.

OP posts:
petunia · 05/05/2010 22:32

It's still showing here

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/05/2010 22:38

oh yes..... interesting.....

Things seem quieter, seismic- wise this morning (those could be 'famous last words' though!) They were saying this morning on News24's weather, that the last 24 hours have seen some real violent activity from the volcano and that (at the moment!), the wind direction is blowing the ash away from us.

OYBBK to answer your question from last night, yes I've been keeping an eye on those updates. The one from 2 days ago was really interesting (the one with all the graphs on the earthquakes that have been in the area.)

Also, if you didn't manage to catch it, I watched that Channel 4 program, 'The Volcano that Stopped Britain' last night. I thought it was good (DH thought it would be full of passengers moaning that they couldn't get home!) but for me, it explained all the science that's being talked about along with some great footage of the volcano. It's still available online or on More4 this Sunday.

There was an interesting interview on BBC Breakfast this morning, discussing the long term travel and insurance implications of the situation.

The interviewee said at the end this could go on for up to 2 years.

She also suggested that perhaps people should be looking at other methods of travel, especially in Europe.

And pointed out that even if someone has been previously covered under their insurance for the disruption, if it happens again they probably won't be covered as it will be classed as an ongoing situation. Although obviously if you are booked with a tour company or ABTA or a European airline you should be taken care of in basic terms up to their legal obligations, any extra cost may not be reimbursed through insurance policies.

Food for thought.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/05/2010 11:49

oh excellent, didnt get chance to watch the volcano problem petunia. might put that on this afternoon.

That is food for thought Manky... 2 years. I guess travelling is going to be a very patient affair for a while.
