Icelandic eruption and the weather

Thought it might be interesting to start a thread on this.
eruption in iceland

It seems to be a fissure eruption and after some reading this afternoon I think it is unlikely at the moment to be putting up large quantities of ash into the atmosphere, this sort of eruption does not seem to be the explosive sort. If it starts to, then we could see some particularly spectacular sunsets.

Worries are though that it might trigger Katla volcano which could be potentially pretty devestating, not only to Iceland but also could affect weather on a global scale. Large eruptions have historically caused global cooling and influenced weather patterns.

hopefully fears end up being unfounded

She is very very active today, looking at the seismic info.

mankyscotslass · 06/05/2010 14:31

and not 100%sure, but some of todays quakes look to be near Katla. (although there are disclaimers on the met office site stating no sign of activity or eruption)!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/05/2010 15:04

How loud must it be for this in the report:
"Loud noises at farms south of the volcano troubled people during last
night. Reports from people hearing loud noises in up to 200 km
distance west and northwest" !

It certainly looks like Eyjaf is becoming very active again with inflation being reported. just going to go and have a squizz at the weather prospects of the next few days....

ok, I think looking at the charts that the winds take it to the west of us. Theres a high pressure over iceland and we will be dominated with north easterlies for a bit. I have two doubts about my thoughts:

1)the high pressure may allow the ash to backfill over us?
2)because the volcano is now erupting much higher I think the ash will end up being at flight level to our west which could disrup transatlantic flights.

Both thoughts are my personal speculations!

So still wait and see......

mankyscotslass · 06/05/2010 19:11

Look at this

petunia · 06/05/2010 20:43

Excellent satellite pictures.

I see the volcano 'woke up' a bit after me saying it had had a quiet night! I was just taking a look at the katla webcam and thinking that it had an 'ash' feel about it. Then I looked at this and realised from the wind direction, it probably has had some ashfall in the area and might get a bit more in the next few days!

petunia · 06/05/2010 21:12

Except it's getting dark now so there's nothing to see on the webcam!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/05/2010 09:33

looks like disruption likely to spain and other parts of southern europe

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/05/2010 09:36

this ashcast looks like someone has been randomly doodling again!

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/05/2010 09:39

Also in the first ash cast link note that the ash levels that exceed engine tolerances extend to FL350. Which may mean some transatlantic flight rerouting according to dh.

Arse - we're flying to portugal tomorrow morning....will we be?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/05/2010 09:55

I think you will be ok suncream, the ash levels are concentrated below FL200 and move away from portugal by tomorrow. Might be a bit of diruption perhaps from nothern portugal today?

suncreamandagoodbook · 08/05/2010 10:03

Phew - am in a flap!! Obviously want to be safe but also desperately want a holiday! thanks

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/05/2010 14:05

Looking at thweather charts, I have some concerns for uk airspace monday and in particular tuesday where the winds becomre more northerly. I think this may well bring dense ash over us for a short while I'm afraid. I think wednesday should then see a more favourable shift again.

will update later, dd wants the pc for homework.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/05/2010 08:02

Unfortunately this could be quite a discruptive week. You can see it coming into Irelands airspace here

some disruption in Europe today.

mankyscotslass · 09/05/2010 09:14

It does no look good does it.

In saying that, the seismic activity overnight at the volcano looks to have dropped off a bit , so maybe she is going into a quieter spell?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/05/2010 12:28

I hope so manky. I'm waiting for the iceland met office to give an update.

OP posts:
mankyscotslass · 09/05/2010 12:48

I just checked and there have been a few more earthquakes in the vicinity this morning.

The update on the site from last night indicates it was quieter yesterday, so fingers x.

OmicronPersei8 · 09/05/2010 14:06

DH is going to Zurich tomorrow - how does that part of Europe look? We've had a look but just can't tell.

Also, this thread on MN is the first place I'd come to check on the ash cloud. Thanks OYBBK and others .

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/05/2010 14:32

I think that early tomorrow Zurich actually looks ok
unfortunately, looking at the weather charts I can't quite work out what is likely to happen after that over mainland europe.

OP posts:
OmicronPersei8 · 09/05/2010 14:50

Thanks OYBBK. So now I just have to worry about him getting back on Wednesday. Ah well.

petunia · 09/05/2010 17:14

Today's assessment of the activity. I guess even if it calms down seismic-wise, it can still produce loads of ash which will affect flights. As they said on News24, this could go on for months yet. And I'd hate to be navigating around all this at the moment!!

mankyscotslass · 09/05/2010 18:33

looking at those maps I would expect Manchester, liverpool and Blacpool airports to have to shut shortly.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/05/2010 20:30

not sure manky - although they look like they have measles I can't spot any black no fly areas?
