Icelandic eruption and the weather

Thought it might be interesting to start a thread on this.
eruption in iceland

It seems to be a fissure eruption and after some reading this afternoon I think it is unlikely at the moment to be putting up large quantities of ash into the atmosphere, this sort of eruption does not seem to be the explosive sort. If it starts to, then we could see some particularly spectacular sunsets.

Worries are though that it might trigger Katla volcano which could be potentially pretty devestating, not only to Iceland but also could affect weather on a global scale. Large eruptions have historically caused global cooling and influenced weather patterns.

hopefully fears end up being unfounded

Just a slight concern on another forum that the weather is turning more northerly this weekend and unfortunatly the volcano is being quite grumpy.

animation

transation of danish text (google):DMU calculates the standing of how the cloud of polluted air from the volcano during the Icelandic glacier Eyjafjallajökull will spread over Europe over the next three days. The forecast is updated every 6 hours.

You can choose to see an animation of how the cloud spread, or click on the various times to see where the cloud is to a particular time.

Graphic shows pollution from the whole air column from surface to 20 km altitude on a relative scale where there is a factor 5000 between the darkest green color (lower concentrations) and the reddest color (highest concentrations). DMU has been based in the volcano sent up pollution in the 3 km altitude oversstemmelse with reports from Iceland.

Note that the model works in UTC time. Danish summer time = UTC + 2 hours.

Thus, at equivalent. 00 UTC to 02 at Danish summer.

I saw the forecast yesterday with the winds coming from a northerly direction and wondered whether that would bring any more ash in our direction.
I'm liking your 'grumpy volcano' description!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/04/2010 11:41

tis a very scientific description I'll have you know!

dd has two friends in her class who still havent made it back home. I'm starting to wonder whether they have taken the opportunity to emigrate!

OP posts:
petunia · 29/04/2010 14:05

Whereabouts are they? Having seen the forecast for the weekend i.e. cold and wet, emigrating might be a good option! And there was me wondering whether it was 'safe' to put the bedding plants out!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/04/2010 14:14

Both in the States.
flipping pain about the weather this weekend. never mind. at least the gardens won't need watering.

OP posts:
petunia · 29/04/2010 21:11

Were they over there for Easter? They're quite a long way from home then.
That animation you posted earlier today is looking more 'interesting' as time goes on. Will be interesting to see whether it affects flights in any way. It was so quick a few weeks ago, when everything shut down.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/04/2010 21:42

they were.
one has made it back today

those animations do seem to have ramifications for southern uk and parts of france. I wonder if the concentrations are within in the new 'safe' limits.

Ah, it's good one has made it back home.
DH showed me this last night showing Europe going from almost no flights to starting up again, last week. It's quite pretty really!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/04/2010 09:20

cool! looks a bit like a nuclear reaction getting going......

volcano status looks quite reassuring actually for the moment (I think!)

OP posts:
petunia · 30/04/2010 10:58

It's good isn't it?
Good news that the volcano is looking slightly less grumpy!
I'm still having the occasional look at the animation you posted yesterday. Our next-door neighbour is supposed to be flying to Chicago from Heathrow, Saturday night (with British Airways as well- we all saw what their attitude was last week!), so it'll be interesting to see what happens over the next few days. I also see another load of ash might be coming our way around Monday time. The metoffice are saying this at the moment:

'The eruption from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano still continues, emitting relatively small amounts of ash and steam compared to the previous weeks. The plume is moving in a southerly direction, and staying roughly in the vicinity of Iceland. Cloud presently obscures the top of the volcano summit. Issued at 0636 on Fri 30 Apr 2010.'

Perhaps if there's not much ash in there it won't affect things too much (being hopeful here!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/04/2010 11:09

Hopefully! dh is travelling in a couple of weeks and I do not want him stuck!

And this rumbles on and on....(pardon the pun!)
DH's just heard about this on the 6Music news.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/05/2010 20:17

ash cast met office report increased eruption bringing ash into our air space. dunno if it constitutes bad ash concentrations though.

petunia - just off to check out your link.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/05/2010 20:18

aha Petunia - I see!!!!! ok could be bad ash concentrations. will be interesting to see how uk flights respond.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/05/2010 20:38

possibly affecting Western Isles

Here we go again (possibly!)

petunia · 03/05/2010 21:02

Irish airspace closing from 7am tomorrow.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/05/2010 21:33

oh dear. I guess theres no getting away from the fact, this isn't going away.

NATS statement

ash cast

Was listening to r4 this morning. An Irish rep was confident that airspace would open this afternoon. An icelandic rep thought that was optimistic and expected it to remain closed for two days.
