Are you sending your children to school Tuesday and Wednesday?

I am a teacher and have heard lots of parents won’t be sending their children in during the heat wave next week.

Are you keeping yours off?

I am dreading it as a teacher; our classroom is so stuffy!

My son has to go and has chemotherapy next week in the heatwave, he’s only 8. I’m sure your child will be fine at school.

We have sports day… I guess I can expect that to be cancelled!

If it's not mine wouldn't be going in. So many schools can't be trusted to be sensible. So many kids got serious heat stroke when schools ploughed ahead with sports days last year.

What a ridiculous question! Of course they should be in school! Houses are even hotter. Buy a bloody fan and put it in your classroom.

Most schools won't allow you to do that you know. At my scbool, every piece of electrical equipment has to have been PAT tested by the company employed by the school to do it. The PAT testing happens on one day per year. That's pretty normal.

No, he's medically complex, on a palliative pathway and isn't coping well at the moment. He doesn't regulate his temperature well and has episodes of being unresponsive, he's safer at home because I know him better than anybody and I know when I need to call an ambulance for him, school know him well but rely on my judgement of how well/unwell he is.

Sorry you’re going through this. This is obvs a very different scenario. Kids with no complex needs can handle a classroom the same as they can handle their living rooms tho. I remember working in 40 degrees, I think maybe 2020 as I was pregnant with my second…. It’s hot AF but if people stay hydrated there’s nothing dangerous about it.

It's only set to be 30 degrees, for crying out loud. Do get a grip.

38° here

get your own grip!

Blueeyedmale · 21/06/2026 00:05

DS will be going in,it will probably be cooler with the air conditioning in schools saying that I remember a few years ago as a railway guard I woke up thinking "don't worry we have air conditioning on the trains.sadly most of the air conditioning units were not working that day,as with the rolling stock getting older and older I expect it will be very much the same during the week.

Oh I am so sorry to hear that ❤️‍🩹

does he usually enjoy school?

if not I'd keep him home permanently. 💕

I work in a school and really dreading it. It gets ridiculously hot in the classrooms. You have to have the windows open and pull down the blinds but that traps the hot air. It’ll be stifling.

Me too 🫣 By the end of yesterday, I had salytmarks on my clothes from sweating constantly all day. By the end of next week it will be totally unbearable. My school can't cool down overnight - every window and door has to be ahut for security. After a few days of heat, walking into school is like walking into an oven. It's awful.

Myloversgotnomoney · 21/06/2026 00:11

Sports stay here on Tuesday, in 35° heat. If it’s not cancelled, they will not be going in.
At the moment they’re talking about parents bringing in gazebos and lollies/fans etc.. it’s silly! Just cancel the event.

Endorewitch · 21/06/2026 00:13

Was gobsnacked to read question and from a teacher!!!Maybe she just wants a smday off. Any excuse. Most people work so definitely they wont be keeping kids away from school. It is hit at home anyhow .

DelphiniumBlue · 21/06/2026 00:13

This thread is quite shocking. Do people not understand the limitations on school budgets which means there are not enough fans, and the blinds don’t all work? That the buildings are poorly designed, and in many cases like greenhouses, so that the temperature inside can often be much higher than outside. That because of H&S regulations, the windows barely open, and you can’t just jam fire doors open. The outside doors are supposed to be shut to keep intruders out and to prevent vulnerable pupils escaping.
It Is not at all like being at home where you can make choices that work for you personally. There is still an expectation that the children will still be learning the usual subjects so you can’t just go sit out under a handy shade providing tree for the week.
I think there should be a maximum temperature for classrooms and school buildings, as is the case in some European countries, so that either the is funded to find a way to reduce the temperature inside, or the school closes when it gets too hot ( eg over 30 degrees).

Myloversgotnomoney · 21/06/2026 00:14

just to add: our school don’t allow the children out on rainy or snowy days. So why isnt extreme heat the same?

FWC2026 · 21/06/2026 00:15

Beer3000 · 20/06/2026 21:19

When I read this, I though "what heat wave?" and had to Google the weather in London. I was wearing a fleece today, and it's forecast to be 19 here on Wednesday.

I just can't imagine a temperature of 39 degrees. Surely no one will be capable of doing anything except complaining for the entire week?

Edited

Where us 'here'? I'm think a wee break. Oils be just the job!

You can actually get heatstroke even if you are hydrated, if your core temperature gets too high.

I was 15 in 1976. As far as I remember, the heat wave started around 2 weeks before school closed for summer. We opened the classroom windows and took our cardigans off. Job done.
The glorious weather continued for weeks on end . No nanny state back then so we just enjoyed the heat, my sister and I and a couple of neighbourhood kids slept out in a tent in our back garden most nights.
What a fantastic and unforgettable year it was and I cant believe its 50 years ago 🥰

Max temperature in 1976 was 35.9C on 3rd July. It was hotter than this in 2022 at 40.3C on the 19th July.

What isn’t talked about much is that that there were approximately 3,500 - 3,700 excess deaths in England and Wales during the peak period from late June to early July 1976 compared with normal levels.

Heatwaves should be taken seriously and not shrugged off as “oh it’s just summer”.

It is also a super El Niño year.

saraclara · 21/06/2026 00:22

Unless you've got an air conditioned house they are more likely to be too hot at home than at school.

That's really not true @cookbookjunkie . In school there are up to thirty bodies in the same room, and it's unlikely that the windows will open more than three or four inches, if they open at all. And the children have no agency in being able to move away or run their wrist under the tap. If there's a fan it's not likely to be anywhere near them.

At home you can open windows properly, probably patio doors too. You can put a fan on and it actually be next to you. You can get up and have a cold shower or go to run your wrists undr the cold tap at any point. Probably get some ice out of the freezer for your drink, or use an ice pack to cook down.

I'm not advocating children not going to school. But your premise is entirely wrong.

saraclara · 21/06/2026 00:25

ToffeeCrabApple · 20/06/2026 23:12

That's terrifically poor design then.

If that happened last year haven't they at least had solar film installed on the windows?

You'd hope theyve also looked at buying some freestanding AC units.

😂🤣😂🤣😂

You know that schools can't even afford glue sticks, surely? How on earth do you think they could afford free standing air conditioners for every room?

Washingupdone · 21/06/2026 00:26

Here, not in the UK, next week it is going to be over 37 in the shade, 24 nighttime. The windows in the classrooms I used to work in are south facing, with 30 odd children with no AC. I can promise you, no one can work. I just put on English films (not their mother tongue).
The local school is closing in the afternoons next week and all end of year exams are only to be taken in the morning,

Why wouldn’t you send your child in? It’s not a heatwave, it’s summer!!

how did we cope with warm weather in the 80’s and 90’s etc without social media telling us it gonna be lovely and warm….

We didn't have these kinds of temperatures in the 80s and 90s, maybe a couple of times in the 90s but not regularly.

ThatLemonBee · 21/06/2026 00:27

I grew up in Portugal , schools where never closed in heatwaves , we had a few summers with temperatures over 40c and contrary to what done believe no we didn’t have AC and most schools still don’t have either

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 21/06/2026 00:29

Ive got a 22ft pool do yes bring it on .
I love the summer , not a heatwave it s a summer
Ive 2 days off a week and one of them is Wednesday!! Hurrah. I'll be in the garden, music on and getting me a tan with a few beers no doubt.
Keep the children hydrated, ice instead of water in the water bottle , it'll melt in no time and stay cool 😎

Papster · 21/06/2026 00:42

Nickyknackered · 20/06/2026 20:47

OP is a teacher, she is hoping to have less kids next week.

No kids in schools in Spain, Portugal etc in summer?

Zanatdy · 21/06/2026 01:01

Well my youngest finished her A levels last week, but of course i’d send them. Wouldn’t enter my head not to personally.

Zanatdy · 21/06/2026 01:03

Assume you’re not in the UK if predicted 38. I am in the South East and 33 is highest predicted temp.
