Are you sending your children to school Tuesday and Wednesday?

I am a teacher and have heard lots of parents won’t be sending their children in during the heat wave next week.

Are you keeping yours off?

I am dreading it as a teacher; our classroom is so stuffy!

Schools often have air-con but if the Students are going to be hot, the location is irrelevant.

The issue is safe transportation for both Students and Educators so they can get there.

And some schools were still planning Sports Days!

I think if Students can wear PE kits or clothes in light colours and have plenty to drink etc, it should be okay. I believe there is a plan where Educators won't allow students to be in classrooms over 30°C.

My children's school is insisting they wear their dark navy blue uniform. It just makes no sense. Loads of children being sent home due to overheating. The teaching staff are pretty much all dressed in light coloured clothes

Surely this should be a decision made by schools rather than by individual parents ? I remember the last heatwave, some schools closed, some schools partially closed, some relocated children to cooler areas of the school. Most operated as normal - it very much depended on the school buildings and surrounding areas.

But no, some parents obviously know better than education professionals... (plus ca change)

Exactly!
Teaching their kids to just take the easy option.

kirinm · 23/06/2026 11:45

I wish our school would make a decision themselves rather than giving parents options of either in or out. No half days allowed which makes very little sense. It’s either dangerously hot and the kids are best at home or it’s okay and they should be in school.

Exactly. This is a decision for schools not parents. If schools are open, they're making a statement that they can keep children safe and comfortable and parents should send their kids in. School staff are much better placed than parents to make this judgement call.

It’s very hard for a parent not in a classroom to understand what level of heat they’re dealing with. If I knew that I’d be able to take at least a vaguely educated decision but as it is, I’ve no idea. Today they’ve offered a half days and it isn’t that hot yet. It’s really confusing.

It reached 28° inside the classroom today at 12. I have left as have flexible PPA this afternoon but interested to know if it has increased!

Our school have told parents they may collect early at 1:30pm tomorrow and Thursday but don’t have to.

Our local SEN school has said the children should stay home if at all possible but are opening for any children that need to go in. Uniform/sports kit/home clothes. whatever they are must comfortable in. They'll have a non academic day for those that can cope with that & academic for those that need that.

I don't have kids there, but I have 2 friends that do, they truly are an amazing school.

local primary has made my neighbours 2 boys very happy. Sports kit. Football WC (replay) games on big screen (voted on by kids which one!). 'Quiet' room for reading, working. Drawing etc. 'Play room' for games Lots of cold water & ice pops.

local senior school is closed today & half days wed/thur. but still full uniform 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

Friday has gone up 5° to 30° on Friday & 32° Saturday, still 🤞🏼🤞🏼it stays under 30° on Sunday.

They're giving parents the option so that those who have to work, can.

It's far easier for school staff to keep half the number of children comfortable, than the full cohort.

Most parents work. If the teachers think it’s dangerous for them to be at school, then I’d find a way to work around it. There’s very little communication other than you can take them out to do home learning or keep them in school. Half days are not an option,

fashionqueen0123 · 20/06/2026 22:43

Why would you send them to school here?

Last time it was 40c they shut our school anyway but it was the last two days of term
so wasn’t such an issue.

Im hoping they let them have the day off tbh. I went into the classroom last week and it was only about 26 that day and it was so stuffy in there.

If it’s that hot in the UK then yes keep them home. Trust your common sense xx

Theunamedcat · 24/06/2026 17:26

Well turns out his new transport does not have air-conditioning three days of him coming home soaking wet despite thin clothes extra drinks and a powerful hand fan ive decided to keep him home tomorrow predicted to be the hottest day i cannot justify him travelling home potentially in 40 degrees for anything from 50 minutes to an hour and a half depending on traffic

FurForksSake · 24/06/2026 22:12

My sons school have offered early pick up, but I can’t as I work in the nhs and it just wouldn’t be possible. And. And. He has air conditioning in his class room and had a lovely afternoon colouring and watching movies with the lovely air. So I will not be fetching him or cancelling my own work.

purpleme12 · 24/06/2026 22:41

My child's school is closed tomorrow!

Which I think is a bit ridiculous really

Also today was slightly hotter than tomorrow is going to be
Tomorrow will be 30 degrees at the warmest where we are

Although they probably only stayed open today cos Ofsted was in!

bigsoftcocks · 25/06/2026 07:13

It was 36 here yesterday , right where the peak temperatures were being recorded. Same expected today. It’s been 23° overnight.

Most schools here are closing early/closed except our secondary….

Schools not being open when it’s just 30° Or the childminder thread who wants to shut when it’s 26°. It’s just absolutely ridiculous.

School is closing it 33+ Im fully in favour of, But before that, surely it’s not such a forgone conclusion as to close the school entirely.

That said all the school buildings are different somehow have Aircon some have none so there’s no one rule that fits everyone.

I think the challenge now for everyone is that all the buildings are heated up so much nothing is cooling down at any point so the heat is very cumulative.

I'm surprised /unsurprised Ofsted didn't look at the weather this week and have the decency to postpone any inspections. I actually think there needs to be an outcry about that.

My children's school was open yesterday morning but all the teachers were doing was babysitting increasingly ill /grumpy children. By the time my children came home they all felt quite unwell (and gave them a lift home)

How do people think the schools manage in Western Sahara? Sometimes the weather is hot. Teachers and pupils just need to suck it up and deal with it.

Piggywaspushed · Yesterday 18:09

You know France was hotter than the Sahara last week right?

IME starting significantly earlier in the day and classrooms which are built for a hot climate.

Piggywaspushed · Yesterday 19:13

I saw a primary school in Cambridgeshire which was built recently and has won awards. It has some kind of eco cooling/heating system. The building is the same ideal temperature all year round (21) and it is well ventilated. All the classrooms face North. Genius. It is also built on some kind of stilts! Poor kids will get a shock when they go up to secondary, mind.

I think it’s outrageous that Ofsted went ahead with inspections with Amber and Red warnings around.

there really should be an outcry about it.

Agree. I am not a teacher but I think this is utterly appalling

Dreadful, but typical of their bullying behaviour. It really is disgusting the way they behave.
