Are you sending your children to school Tuesday and Wednesday?

I am a teacher and have heard lots of parents won’t be sending their children in during the heat wave next week.

Are you keeping yours off?

I am dreading it as a teacher; our classroom is so stuffy!

This is just a very petty HT who seems to enjoy causing rows with parents (and I say that as someone who worked in schools for 20 years and normally backs to the hilt).

He emailed yesterday to say kids should wear full PE kit (which doesn’t dictate a trainer colour) but with black trainers. Where parents were meant to get black trainers from on a Sunday night is anyone’s guess.

DS had black trainers but if he hadn’t I’d likely have just kept him home. Their isolation room is like an oven in winter, it’s ridiculous to have kids in there today.

some Head Teachers are just power hungry control freaks.

Our school is insisting the children wear head to navy blue, whereas all the teachers are dressed in cool light coloured outfits. It's just stupid not to allow non uniform

In other countries parents crack on with life kids go to school and all get on with it.

Its summer not war.

France have closed loads of schools. In most 9f Italy they have already broken up but in previous years when it has still been above 35 when they return in September then they have closed schools early at noon. It's predicted to peak at 39 where I am. That's not just a bit warm.

Vivianebrooksmatsumoto · 22/06/2026 15:26

It is a heatwave and climate change in action. Summers in the 80s and 90s were less hot than this, that's why we coped. It's getting hotter year on year. The BBC4 docu-drama that aired the other week called 'Heatwave' is close to becoming a reality. We live in a country not used to this, unlike the far east and US where air con is the norm everywhere.
'Sun Fairies?' Seriously! What an infantile notion. That's almost as good as 'girly dins dins'... ! 🙄

And to add that it's a vicious cycle using a/c as it contributes to air temps outdoors.

Our school is closing. It’s meant to be 40c here.

Manthide · 22/06/2026 16:54

I lived in Greece many moons ago and dd1 finished school at 1230 and the schools broke up middle of June.

And everybody left cities and swam and played. What a life.

Just reported on the BBC that 845 French schools have closed due to the heatwave with 1800 more rearranging their teaching hours.

Apparently many more are giving informal advice about keeping children home.

So much for ‘British people are skivers, Europeans manage fine’, I guess.

That’s because people speak from prejudice rather than experience or fact.

Had two children off today and apparently a few more won’t be in all week!

Some of out classrooms were 35 degrees today, while outside was "only" 30 when I left at 3.

We are forecast 38-40 Weds and Thurs. I don't think we'll be staying open!

Are they going to be fined?
Ours made attendance optional when it hit 40 degrees a few years ago, but they have said can early collect at 1pm, but otherwise all children expected in. School is open until 3.30 as normal for those who cannot collect. Today only about a quarter of my girls classes stayed until 3.30. It's great for those children whose parents don't work/can wfh. But many can't.

wonderouswelly · 22/06/2026 19:30

No they’ve told parents that we are going to do all we can to keep children comfortable… we don’t even have a fan haha

Oh great..parents keep kids off..then I bet we get more kids in the shop running around..it will be cool enough to take them shopping no doubt! 🤔

God, you sound miserable. 🤦‍♀️

fashionqueen0123 · 22/06/2026 20:24

Nearly all the schools round here have announced they are going to be shut for half days Tues-Thurs. Some of the secondaries are staying open.

Most people are not fans of stiff upper lip and unnecessary sufferings, including British :) it is just that the "nobody died when we were young" brigade is the loudest.

Ahhhh, a generation survived the long, hot summer of '76.

Oh, god. Not another one. 🙄

So, what?

Agreed. Also, most large shops round me have air con. If I didn’t have a unit at home, I’d probably have spent a fair chunk of yesterday afternoon camped out in Sainsbury’s frozen foods aisle.

If parents want to take their children to a public space to cool off, why not?

I did this with DS when we had that very hot spell a few years ago
We took some books and things and went and sat in the local shopping centre. That was when I lived in a particularly unbearably hot flat.

BurnoutBee · 23/06/2026 08:33

@wonderouswelly

And parents fall for the lip service. My kids secondary have said “students are to let staff know immediately if they feel dizzy, sick or unwell”. This was put into the guidance after my son passed out in his history lesson with not much warning beforehand due to how stuffy and hot the room was. He didn’t have much warning beforehand that he was gonna hit the deck, or should I say desk.

pollymere · 23/06/2026 08:47

Schools often have air-con but if the Students are going to be hot, the location is irrelevant.

The issue is safe transportation for both Students and Educators so they can get there.

And some schools were still planning Sports Days!

I think if Students can wear PE kits or clothes in light colours and have plenty to drink etc, it should be okay. I believe there is a plan where Educators won't allow students to be in classrooms over 30°C.

Theunamedcat · 23/06/2026 11:13

Ok I see a lot of people picking up on cars having air-conditioning etc etc (my sons school does too which is why he is in school) cars can and do struggle in high temperature there are a lot of things on a car that are more likely to go wrong in extreme heat I dont know how well other people take care of their cars and things can and do go wrong on even the best kept cars my point was that as a parent im weighing up the potential for my son (who is asthmatic) being stuck roadside either behind a breakdown or in one the car companies are doing the same he travels on a bad road no paths nowhere to pull in a lot of the time we are all taking a sensible approach (and yes im aware breakdown can happen with me) assessment of risks daily the school is staying open parents are being told as Thursday may hit 40 they will be fine with parents keeping their child home if they have medical conditions exacerbated by the heat feel free to keep them home but they are remaining open my only wobble is the car journey home im literally sending my child to school an hour away despite the heat and still being called a snowflake for hesitation 🙄
