Are you sending your children to school Tuesday and Wednesday?

I am a teacher and have heard lots of parents won’t be sending their children in during the heat wave next week.

Are you keeping yours off?

I am dreading it as a teacher; our classroom is so stuffy!

When was 76 a heatwave? That’s just summer.

Assume you’re not in the UK if predicted 38. I am in the South East and 33 is highest predicted temp.

Think it depends which part and which weather app you’re using
my friend sent me this earlier

just to add: our school don’t allow the children out on rainy or snowy days. So why isnt extreme heat the same?

Because...(I am not a teacher) The heat is boxed into the room? 🤷

BasaFillet · 21/06/2026 02:15

I’m considering whether to keep them off. I work part time so could just about manage it. The school has no air con, they keep fundraising for random things but they really need air conditioning as temperatures are rising. I’d refuse to work in an office without aircon in 35degree heat, why should children be forced to do the same? One of my kids is v sensitive to heat and has been unwell on a couple of occasions, one being the 40degree heatwave a few years ago so I’m quite conscious and respectful of the heat!

ApricotTulip · 21/06/2026 02:44

Nonsense OP. 38C is freezing. I went to school in the Sahara desert and we did cross country at 50C in a Puffa jacket and didn't even need a drink of water. You namby pamby! 😁

OP is you question aimed at parents who live in the centre of the universe aka London or the UK as a whole?

Are you saying no one is allowed to post about the heatwave because some people might not be having a heatwave? Why?

ApricotTulip · 21/06/2026 02:59

Growlybear83 · 20/06/2026 20:51

Whyever woukd you keep your children off school just because we’re in the middle of a heatwave? Children still go to school in countries with temperatures very much hotter than expected here next week.

Why has the French education minister told people they can keep their kids off school in the heatwave next week if they all merrily go to school then?

I have to say I have never understood why people bang on about the Summer of 1976! Yes, it was a long hot summer, but we have had a number of long hot summers since. Including last year (2025) and 2018. There have been quite a few more. The obsession with talking about Summer of 1976 is bizarre. Confused

I was taking O levels in 1976. I don't remember any of us even having a water bottle.

Noorandapples · 21/06/2026 03:04

Mumsnet is so funny because why are people genuinely furious when people have a different opinion. It could hit 39 in London so I'm considering keeping mine home, undecided. 2 days off school won't land a child in dire straits, they wont end up a delinquent.

teachingsun · 21/06/2026 03:17

These threads are always so ridiculously polarised and packed with slam dunk, End Of opinions.

If you're in an area that is likely to see 27/28 degrees, or have DC in an air conditioned school, then that's really very different to someone in an area with predicted temptations of 39 degrees and a child who struggles with heat for wherever reason.

There is not one simple answer. For many, yes, of course kids should be in school. For others, it's completely reasonable to keep them off for a day or so.

It's unlikely that most kids will suffer any meaningful harm from being in school; and equally unlikely that anyone will suffer meaningful harm by missing a day or so of school, and sitting with their feet in a bowl of cold water and eating ice lollies!

Treetreetreetree · 21/06/2026 03:25

My children go to a state school which had air conditioning. So I might go in with them and lay under a desk.

Iocanepowder · 21/06/2026 03:51

DreamyScroller · 20/06/2026 21:01

It's only set to be 30 degrees, for crying out loud. Do get a grip.

It is set to be 39 where we are ‘for crying out loud’

I am in the South East and it’s currently 39c for Wednesday.

sakura06 · 21/06/2026 04:04

My classroom gets the morning sun and is usually at least 2-3° hotter than outside. I’m lucky I can open my windows wide in the mornings for breeze. I pull the blinds down every night to stop the room getting too hot, but it was 26° at 8am regardless last week. If it gets over 30°, the children cannot function. There are no fans, and certainly no air con! 39° is going to be challenging.

OP is a teacher, she is hoping to have less kids next week.

Yes - I think she’s going to start a trend!
There are still some working parents out there you know /not everyone is living on benefits or disability payments yet.

wonderouswelly · 20/06/2026 21:18

Interesting! I’ll have to let you know what my class attendance is this week haha. I’ll be bringing a fan in from
home but it will be blowing on me, not the kids 😂

I also have two children and both will be in. The prep schools one of my dc attend have cancelled their sports day on Monday. Ours is still going ahead.

The sports day should be cancelled. It's because schools don't take ordinary steps to calm things down in the heat that parents keep kids off.

Settlersa · 21/06/2026 05:08

Where is it going to be 39, I can only see 37 on the Met office weather, BBC says 35

Settlersa · 21/06/2026 05:12

All the weather apps say different. I usually look at Met office and BBC

Londonrach1 · 21/06/2026 05:24

Of course. Why on earth wouldn't you unless they are ill. Not heard a single person saying they wouldn't apart from you op

Settlersa · 21/06/2026 05:28

Everyone will still be all out drinking for the football, I doubt the hot weather will deter that.

MassiveOvaryaction · 21/06/2026 06:00

Mine will be home, but because he finished his GCSEs last week and would be mightily pissed off if I tried to send him in Grin

In really not looking forward to work though. Polyester uniform and a health condition and meds that cause heat intolerance on a good day 🥵

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 21/06/2026 06:17

I imagine most kids will be in at my secondary school. They won't all be in lessons, mind, as many of them seem to have given up that sort of thing. Instead they will be roaming around being rude to members of staff who ask why they aren't in class.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/06/2026 06:23

If you live in a hot country you are acclimatized to the heat. If you don't, you aren't. It's as simple as that.

I'm in Vancouver, Canada. We had a heat dome in the summer of '21 that lasted 6 days. Over 600 people died, mostly elderly. Agricultural and ecological damaged was devastating. Search: Vancouver heat dome 2021. It was awful. Heat needs to be taken very seriously. If someone says they can't tolerate it, believe them. It's not some sort of weakness.

Stressedoutmummyof3 · 21/06/2026 06:24

It will be hot if the kids are at home, it will be hot if the kids are at school. Sun cream, sun hats and plenty of fluids is the answer. DS's school have said the kids can go in non uniform and take squash/juice to school instead of just water (primary school). There is no maximum temperature for work places so I imagine most parents will be working and most kids will be in school.
Although my DH is hoping his work give them time off next week but then they work outside, including during the hottest part of the day.
