I am a teacher and have heard lots of parents won’t be sending their children in during the heat wave next week.

Are you keeping yours off?

I am dreading it as a teacher; our classroom is so stuffy!

We are set to break the heat wave of 76 record this week in the Midlands its not "just summer" my son has a hour long taxi ride each way im concerned about the return home as any parent would be

It's going to be 36 here that's not normal. I'd happily keep my children off but I imagine most will go in!

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · Yesterday 20:53

Nothing to do with staying up late on Tuesday to watch England V Ghana?

Why wouldn’t you send your child in? It’s not a heatwave, it’s summer!!

how did we cope with warm weather in the 80’s and 90’s etc without social media telling us it gonna be lovely and warm….

Where I am it’s forecast to be 38 on Tuesday and 37 on Wednesday. It never reached those temperatures during the 80s and 90s. Clearly a heatwave and well beyond normal warm summer weather.

We have sports day… I guess I can expect that to be cancelled!

More concerned about the school closing cos of the heat, to be honest. But that would be as unreasonable as me keeping the kids off.
It's hot. It's not dangerously or record-breakingly hot. Kids will be fine so long as they're sensible. I wouldn't even think about keeping them off (and presumably in a house which is just as hot).

I think 36 degrees is record breaking and dangerous for some.

ThreeFeetTall · Yesterday 20:57

When there was a heatwave a few years ago it was 40 degrees in London and my kids school closed. But I would send them in unless I heard otherwise.

OP is a teacher, she is hoping to have less kids next week.

Op is not a teacher, they are looking for a reaction to the possible hot weather smile 😊

Pacificwave · Yesterday 20:58

Are the schools giving a skiving amnesty during the heatwave? Or will all the parents you are encouraging to keep their children home get s penalty for unexcused absence, OP?

purpleme12 · Yesterday 21:00

Erm yes it hadn't occurred to me not to

Cobrakainerd · Yesterday 21:00

Oh great..parents keep kids off..then I bet we get more kids in the shop running around..it will be cool enough to take them shopping no doubt! 🤔

ShesGotAway · Yesterday 21:01

Of course- I'm pretty sure my son's school has air conditioning whereas my house definitely doesn't!

DreamyScroller · Yesterday 21:01

It's only set to be 30 degrees, for crying out loud. Do get a grip.

Spidey66 · Yesterday 21:02

People don't stay home from work when it's hot.....even if they work in kitchens! So why would you not send kids to school?

Met office is currently showing 39 for London on Tuesday and the record is 40.3 so there may actually be a chance of the record being broken. 39.0 would still be the second hottest ever day in the UK.

No, he's medically complex, on a palliative pathway and isn't coping well at the moment. He doesn't regulate his temperature well and has episodes of being unresponsive, he's safer at home because I know him better than anybody and I know when I need to call an ambulance for him, school know him well but rely on my judgement of how well/unwell he is.

FabulousWealthyTart · Yesterday 21:04

Ahhhh, a generation survived the long, hot summer of '76.

DandelionFarmer · Yesterday 21:05

Of course I am keeping them at home!

Maybe where you are. Much hotter elsewhere in the country.

I'm not keeping the kids off but no it isn't just 30 which is now unremarkable as everything heats up. It's forecast to be 36 on Wednesday where I am.

@DaisyChain505soo many schools don’t have blinds nor fans!

I bet if schools put out a message to parents asking them to lend a fan for the day they’d have parent lining up with them rather than risk school saying they’d shut and them not being able to go to work.

Gazelda · Yesterday 21:08

During a heatwave a few years ago, a former colleague announced she was keeping her kids off school so wouldn’t be able to come into work. And then wondered why her absence record started to be monitored more closely.

I didn't even know it was a thing to stay off in hot weather.
Why would it be any better/worse in school.
Kids should be on school end of.
The school will ensure everything is in place so everyone is as comfortable as possible (same as parents would do at home).

Lol, and they say kids today have so many pressures. Going to school clearly isn't one!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · Yesterday 21:11

A few years ago, we had the extreme heat where it reached 40° in some parts. I was a teacher at the time and schools round our way all said that kids could stay home if the parents felt that was best. I was in the school hall with all of the Y6 children (about 40 of them) and two standard fans. We all nearly melted!

My own children were allowed to stay at home and they went to my parents’ house to keep cool. DD1’s classroom was a mobile and they didn’t even have a fan! We leant one of ours from home to the teacher and she was so grateful.

It’s not meant to be anywhere near as hot this time but DD1 has been told she doesn’t need to wear her tie or blazer to school all week. All three of mine will be going in though because we’ve not been told it would be an acceptable absence, they’ll all be fine and DH and I still have to work.

Of course it’s a heatwave!

Temperatures in much of Europe are expected to be above 40C! It’s 39C in London and we do not have the infrastructure to cope well with those temperatures.
