I am a teacher and have heard lots of parents won’t be sending their children in during the heat wave next week.

Are you keeping yours off?

I am dreading it as a teacher; our classroom is so stuffy!

Why wouldn’t you send your child in? It’s not a heatwave, it’s summer!!

how did we cope with warm weather in the 80’s and 90’s etc without social media telling us it gonna be lovely and warm….

Bollocks. In the 90’s a warm day was 20’
35 is a fucking heat wave especially when we have no aircon and aren’t set up for it at all

I need to go to work as a doctor. I hope the schools don’t shut, as if I have to look after my kids, patients will have their appointments cancelled, and I do not want to do that as they will be rescheduled months hence.

What a ridiculous question! Of course they should be in school! Houses are even hotter. Buy a bloody fan and put it in your classroom.

Our classroom has lots of windows (that can't be left open in the cooler times of the day to release the trapped hot air) and 32 bodies in it. 30 of which belong to six year olds that are getting irritable because they're uncomfortable (hopefully the other two, being adults, will manage that irritability better!). We have one tiny desk fan to blow that warm air around. (speaking of which, why are you suggesting teachers should be the ones to buy them?)

I am not suggesting they should stay home, but to say they'll be more comfortable at school is just not true in many cases.

I think people don't realise how very hot it's going to be in some parts. My school has a translucent roof and huge glass windows. Last year I had kids almost passing out and feeling sick. We're not wet lettuces, we're feeling ill from extreme heat.

That's terrifically poor design then.

If that happened last year haven't they at least had solar film installed on the windows?

You'd hope theyve also looked at buying some freestanding AC units.

I’ll bite. Where do you think the budget comes from to buy AC units? Or even fans lol.

That's it, in countries that are hot a lot they have a more sensible daily routine and more sensible school uniforms (or no uniform)

British school summer uniforms are fine for the heat. Thin white cotton shirts & shorts, cotton gingham dresses are ideal for keeping cool.

Of course I’m sending my children to school. Am surprised people would keep their children off unless their classroom would be dangerously (not just unpleasantly) hot

I've taught in classrooms with windows that dont open fully and that have blinds that dont work, or no blinds at all and it's like being in an oven.

And again. What about secondary schools?

WimbyAce · 20/06/2026 23:19

Both ours have sports days next week 🥵 But yes after all the emails re attendance I will def be sending them in!

CrushingOnRubies · 20/06/2026 23:25

It’s set to be sunny yet only 23 in my corner of Sw England where I am in Tuesday. Warm but not uncomfortably so. Students will be in school based on that.

We are set to break the heat wave of 76 record this week in the Midlands its not "just summer" my son has a hour long taxi ride each way im concerned about the return home as any parent would be

Presume the taxi will have aircon like most cars?

Swissmeringue · 20/06/2026 23:29

I must admit I'm really gonna enjoy taking DD to her ice skating lesson on Wednesday. If she gets too hot at school she can skate in a t-shirt, that'll sort her out. 😂

It’s not a bloody heatwave it’s summer. 😂

You should tell the Met Office that. They’re under the impression that heatwave is a scientific term which is forecast to be easily met.

MagnesiumBathSalts · 20/06/2026 23:37

Il be keeping them home. Their school has no aircon but we have it at home

Okiedokie123 · 20/06/2026 23:38

@SleeplessInWherever your kids school provide bottles of water every day?
Disposable ones? That must be incredibly expensive. And really bad for the environment.

tellmesomethingtrue · 20/06/2026 23:42

Why are people acting shocked and like they don’t know why this would be suggested? Some schools are insanely hot and the children will feel unwell. It’s a perfectly reasonable question

Ewock · 20/06/2026 23:46

I'm a primary teacher, had 2 kids in my class vomiting Friday afternoon which our first aider believed was due to the heat. My room was awful, the head Teacher has aircon and usually just goes on anout its not that out! I will be ringing parents Mon to see how they are.
My dc is in secondary and we've had an email to say that they don't have to wera blazers, but still have to wear trousers, shirt and tie! Its forecast to be 35 here. I have emailed instead to explain that the rule is ridiculous last year the secondary kids could wear pe kit for the last 4 weeks due to the heat.

Rituelec · 20/06/2026 23:49

The schools are set up for remote learning now since covid anyway. They closed when the boiler was broken and did remote learning.

I know most homes in the UK don't have air conditioning but did the vehicles not have it?

DontBuyAnotherBook · 20/06/2026 23:51

Why wouldn't I?

Pssedoffathis · 20/06/2026 23:52

Yes

Rituelec · 20/06/2026 23:52

Only on mumsnet do people say 'well my kids will be playing rounders' when its 36 out, ok then 😆

Coffeeteasugar · 20/06/2026 23:54

Last time we had ridiculously hot temps school stayed open but did say to parents that if they wanted to pick up after lunch (once core subjects had been taught) they were welcome to. Most did. The rest we sat with their feet in their trays full of water and occasionally sprayed them down with a spray bottle like wilting flowers. We coped. Was much learning done, no. But at least they were in school and parents had the choice of whether to keep them there or take then home.
