Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

I really expected more thunderstorms this summer which just haven't occurred.

Is it this el nino dome that's held them off across much of Europe?

Reading this from the metoffice, it sounds like it has a minimal effect to start with and the full effects aren't felt until later in the year/next year. At the moment, the heat dome is more to do with high pressure stuck over France/Europe and the air being very stable and nothing's moving ~ it's almost like it's become 'too hot for a storm.' Once this high pressure/dome breaks down, we should see some cooler weather and hopefully some rain (it won't be enough but at least it's something as we move towards Autumn.)

BBC weather shows rain for us South east on Monday. Met office ...no rain !

I wonder if there would be any value in us collectively performing a rain dance?

Our reservoir levels are a lot healthier this week than this time last year.

Occured to me last week that how I view 0.25mm of rain depends hugely on whether it has rained for 50 days straight or whether it hasn’t rained at all.

now = no real rain

35 degrees in SE London. DB on holiday in Normandy and says it’s 40.

Hottest day of the year so far ~ 38.1C recorded at Kew Gardens.

I was looking at temperatures across Europe this afternoon. It's made me feel that I could be in a much worse heatwave and paying for it.

Yep been hiding all afternoon. Front and back door open. Curtains drawn. I dozed off for a bit. This morning I didn't want to leave the supermarket it was lovely and cool.

If it’s hanging around, what does that mean for autumn and winter?

EmeraldRoulette ~ depending on weather patterns, it possibly means a wet, windy and mild autumn/early start to winter but it can then give us colder, settled weather later on in the winter. There are so many other factors involved that affect our weather to say which way it can go....

We've been hiding inside this afternoon as well. It's quite cloudy now and I've just ventured out to give the plants a water but (according to my weather station), it's an unpleasant 34C at the moment.

Sat Sun Mon se to be getting hotter in the sw according to Met office app. All 3 of those still above the heatwave threshold there I think.

The SW looks to be hovering around the low-mid 20s mark, the higher temperatures especially inland over those 3 days before a slow cool down later in the week so yes, the heatwave threshold might be reached in some places over those days...

I have 29/28/27/27 for Fri-Mon according to Met Office. Those have gone up from low 20s. Hoping they might get revised down again. That being said I think i may have acclimatised to 27 now. It definitely doesn’t feel as hot as it used to. Absolutely no sign of any rain in the next week either. Sob 😭

I've eaten my way through this heatwave, I'm convinced I'll sweat out all my essential salt and minerals without regular snacks. I'll be glad when it's cool enough to run regularly again.

I've put in a few places in the SW into the metoffice website and it does seem to be going for higher temperatures. Tomorrow the metoffice and the GFS seem to be in agreement but after that, the GFS goes for the low-mid 20s/maybe a few places hitting 27/28C over the weekend/early next week but the metoffice seems to stick at 26/27/28C so let's hope the metoffice revise them down. And no rain forecast for the SW

I've found myself getting really hungry as well ~ I think salty snacks are supposed to be good for replacing salt lost through sweating?

😂 That reminds me of my sister and i eating our way through the Leicestershire 38 degrees in 2019 on ice cream and crisps. Important to keep your electrolytes balanced in heat.

I’m in the midlands until Sunday so will have low 20s for the weekend whatever the SW does.

I’d just like rain to make everything wet and reduce the fire risks everywhere.

It is indeed ~ the importance of a balanced diet can't be under-estimated!
I think the midlands are still in the mid-20s range over the weekend and yes, some rain to dampen everything down would be lovely at the moment.
