Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

Thoughts from Netweather (from a few days ago) and TheWeatherOutlook on what summer might have in store for us.

I've been watching the BBC weather app with interest as it changes by the day. It's all over the place. It's like they can't work out what's going to happen beyond the next 24-48 hours and they keep changing their minds.

Today's thoughts from Netweather gives an idea of some of the temperatures being experienced in other areas of the world as the National Drought Group meets today...

We had lots of heavy rain last night that wasn't forecast.

Anyone see Jeremy Clarkson on Instagram saying that his harvest was fu*ed so he might as well enjoy the weather. Now he has other pursuits that not all farmers do.

I've a friend a farmer who has yurts and a small camping area. But there's no grass for his sheep and cattle. The mountain he could have put some sheep on was burned up in a fire.

Sorry I'm rambling. But it's the same story across Europe for our food chain.

That would be the same Jeremy Clarkson that’s spent years telling everyone to get over climate change.

I want unexpected heavy rain <stamps foot>

Thinking about this more. It’s good that the government are going to support by building 9 new reservoirs but

1. why the hell is my tax going on this when my water bills are extortionate and the water company ceos and share holders are making millions. (See also paying to clean up the rivers SWW keep pumping sewage into.)
2. The first one isn’t going to be completed until 2036. What takes so long? And if it takes so long why wasn’t this started years ago? It’s not like this sort of weather becoming more prevalent hasn’t been predicted for years. Especially in the SE which has known it is going to have a water supply issue for ages.

An Amber extreme heat alert's been issued by the metoffice for Thursday...

My area seems to be just outside the amber warning area. But it's going to be horrible 🥵 🥵 🥵

Damnation I need to head south for a few days … the next few days

We're in the Amber zone and we're looking at 32C this afternoon and 35C tomorrow. I'm clinging on to the thought that the days are getting shorter so less time for the sun to start heating the day...
And the gfs is forecasting rain for next week for most of us so let's hope it happens this time....🙏

I’m up near you tomorrow I think. Which is terrible timing. Let’s hope it tops out at 35 because I remember July 2019 up there 🥵

it just occured to me it's all my fault.
I bought cycling rain gear in May... and it has rained twice since then where I live.

I don’t remember July 2019 being hot but the odd few days wouldn’t have been a problem like this summer has been. And 2018 was awful so I suppose anything after that would’ve seemed fine.

I think Monday looks like the day for rain for us (if they don’t take it away).

I’m not sure 2019 was generally hot but there were a mentally hot couple of few days in parts of the country at least. Think that heatwave still has the second hottest day ever recorded in England. I just remember the road surfaces melting and the trains being unable to run. And the relief of coming back to the sw where it was 23/24 not 38.5

Monday 17th-26th August
Into the start of next week frontal systems will likely approach or move across the UK from the Atlantic. These will bring bring rain to many parts of the UK, although any heavy rain will probably be across high ground in the northwest. Temperatures will likely be near normal or slightly above. Later in the period, high pressure will probably have more of an influence with drier conditions developing for many. Some rain is still possible at times, particularly in the north, together with a risk of thunderstorms in the south. Temperatures will likely be above normal.

justasking111 ~ I guess that's a positive of the hot weather ~ washing dries quickly even if it all (towels especially!) end up being a bit on the crisp side!

I got all my sofa/chair/cushion covers washed, dried and back on the sofa by lunchtime yesterday, which was nice but they only needed washing because everyone is sweating on them! This summer is more an endurance test than a season.

I saw that @GloriaSmud and the Met Office app was showing a pleasing drop next week to more normal temperatures and even a 30% chance of rain in my area. That was yesterday. Now the chance of rain has practically gone, and the temperatures are forecast to be 25/26 - better, but not really cooler. It can stop now 🥵

@BatshitCrazyWoman ~ according to the metoffice, we've got a 20%/30% chance of rain but no rain symbols for Monday. The BBC seem a bit more certain with 55%/60% + rain symbols, so we'll see....

InMySpareTime ~ that's a good way to describe it 'more of an endurance test than a season!' But it looks like cooler weather is on the way and hopefully some rain will follow...

I think the rain % is a really weird way to display the weather.

I’m trying to be positive and believing this is the last ridiculously hot day. The days are getting a bit shorter and I have more shade in my garden now.

We've still got 30C forecast tomorrow and then 25C/getting cooler from Saturday onwards. Rain ~ hopefully everyone will get some next week but it might be a bit thundery/'hit and miss' sort of thing.

DH went out on the boat this morning to cool off fishing. There's no relief out there whatsoever. He was back before noon. Said it was a furnace, no cooling breeze. No fish bar undersized sea bass who were chasing his lure. They need to be in much deeper water which speaking to locals the fish, lobsters and crabs have done.

In Powys he spoke to the farmers as he went round the farms on Tuesday. They're sending lambs and ewes and cattle to auction now because there's no grass and little hay. The prices are way down because across Europe farmers are doing the same. Next year they'll be wanting perhaps to buy new breeding stock but from who and at what price. It's not just arable farming that is completely stuffed.

The metoffice has expanded the 'extreme heat' warning zone and N.Ireland has got a yellow weather warning for a chance of thunderstorms tomorrow (lucky them!)
