Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

Thoughts from Netweather (from a few days ago) and TheWeatherOutlook on what summer might have in store for us.

An early look ahead at what the UK summer may have in store

Ahead of the full summer forecast, an early look at what summer could have in store. One factor is a developing strong El Nino, which may have some influence.

This is today's long-range forecast from the metoffice ~ hopefully it'll provide some relief, even if it's just for a few days/a week or so....

Wednesday, 29th July-Friday, 7th August
Dry at first across the south with long sunny periods, where it will also be very warm. Cloudier in the north with some outbreaks of rain, which could be heavy in places, and temperatures nearer normal. It will probably become more changeable thereafter, with potential for an area of low pressure to move close to or across the UK at the end of July or early August. This could bring spells of heavy rain and perhaps some strong winds for a time. It may become more settled again toward the end of the first week of August.

Well it's said a deluge will run off hard ground soft rain is preferable after the hotter weather. So 🤞 we get showers.

hello everyone

I was about to say something completely different before lovely @GloriaSmud did the update

I'm afraid I was going to say - my interpretation of the forecast from My area is no end in sight. So depressing.

And I'm not sure if it's linked to a procedure I had earlier this week, but I really don't feel very well. I think it's a low-level unwell because it's not possible to switch off the oven I live in. Luckily, I am a pessimist. I had originally planned to have this procedure later but realised that 1) I was feeling ill anyway and 2) I don't think there's a way to salvage this summer. Sad but true. I don't think I've ever taken ibuprofen in a couple of months. It's mad.

I heard today that two other neighbours have made appeals for air-conditioning to be fitted to their flat only - but of course, in spite of being a shared freehold, people are saying no because of concerns around the NHBC warranty

But yeah, I often struggle to interpret woolly words in forecast anyway. But looking at three forecasts for the next 10 days - it's just an unending stretch of this it's horrible - we're on another day of no air today. I do think it's that that's making me feel ill rather than a slow recovery.

I had a nasty side effect from a new medication yesterday. I agree I feel a lot worse because of the heat I reckon.

Hope you feel much improved soon.

EmeraldRoulette · 24/07/2026 22:49

@justasking111 sorry to hear that. Hope you feel better soon.

Honestly, I think I'm okay after what I had

It's just the heat in the flat making me feel unwell - continuing to be baked overnight and feel terrible as soon as you get up in the morning it's ridiculous.

GloriaSmud · 25/07/2026 06:48

@EmeraldRoulette ~ DD1 had to have an operation at the end of April and she's finding her recovery hasn't been helped by the heatwaves ~ lack of sleep, finding that she then forgets things doesn't make her feel better at all!

The gfs is still giving another blast of heat for the middle-end of next week, especially for the midlands/southwards but yet again this morning, it's forecasting the heat to break up from next weekend onwards and for things to become a bit more unsettled. Even if this doesn't mean much rain to start with, some cooler temperatures would be nice...

(It's just over a month since the longest day and I think it's become noticeable in the last few days how much the nights are drawing in now...in just over a month it'll be autumn....)

I’m just sat in the garden and it’s only now that the sun is coming up over the trees. Nights will start to draw in and the mornings feel cooler as we don’t get that early intense sun.

Let’s hope it’s just one more week of crazy heat and it settles down to something more bearable.

nannynick · 25/07/2026 08:55

Rain would be good - can smell the Cairngorms wildfire from NE coast, over 90 miles from the fire.

justasking111 · 25/07/2026 08:59

These fires are heartbreaking.

GloriaSmud · 25/07/2026 11:00

Rain is coming, especially for the north and Scotland so hopefully that'll help the situation and it looks like 'regular' rain as well ~ not a sudden deluge and then nothing. Further south, there's rain but it's looking more likely to be the thundery stuff....Wherever it falls, it will all take a while to soften the ground after the weeks of heat we've had though.

OP posts:
EmeraldRoulette · 25/07/2026 11:19

@nannynick I had an interesting discussion about that fire on another thread but a lot of people don't want to listen to farmers and practical
prevention ideas sadly.

@GloriaSmud I hope your DD1 is okay

I really feel for anybody who's had surgery. I can only describe what I've had as being really minor like maybe get a couple of days off work for it.

This summer has really not been helped by the fact that I was completely unprepared - that's totally my fault because I normally have a whole bunch of stuff that I do to try and get ready for it as I obviously know what this flat is like

This year, I did not do any of those things because I got distracted by health related stuff. It's actually quite a lot of hassle so I did have the debate about whether it was worth trying to sort in early July - sorry this seems very opaque doesn't it? I'm trying not to be recognised in case any of my neighbours are on here lol.

Anyway, my list for next summer is even bigger!

Also, what is it with swimming in outdoor spots having been totally taken over by established organisations? You can't just rock up anywhere.
I don't mind rocking up somewhere and paying.

But all this "you have to have a tow float, we have to do an induction, induction only runs once a fortnight and only if the wind is blowing SSW and probably at a time everyone is working" - so annoying.

I don't own a wetsuit either. I find it hard to believe I would really need one. The sea in the north east coast was like a bath in last year's heat waves - so a lake near me isn't likely to make me need a wetsuit is it? There may be lots of fact to hear that I'm unaware of.

sorry for the long rant - the heat wave threads have been totally taken over so I put my rant here.

passing time is like wading through treacle at the moment it's awful. And we're having lots of tropical nights. The reality outside is a lot different than what's being reported and I still don't know why.

nannynick · 25/07/2026 11:22

@EmeraldRouletteNot sure you can prepare for 30+ degree heat, 20+ degree nights, where home does not cool down much overnight. My flat is like an oven… I have internal shutters, have fans, but getting cool air into flat and hot air out is hard.

Delatron · 25/07/2026 11:49

@EmeraldRoulette I hear you about lakes. I swim in a local lake. They insist on tow floats but not wetsuits (even in winter) and when it’s a heatwave they say no wetsuits as it’s actually dangerous to wear one.

Delatron · 25/07/2026 11:50

I actually prefer my lake in the winter though. It’s too busy at the moment so not peaceful.

Oh, that's interesting

the website may not be up-to-date - I thought it was a bit nuts to be insisting on wetsuits.

There's a row going on at ours. One side is for swimming and paddle boarders, the other side for power boats all clearly delineated It's being ignored this season. So the swimmers etc are retreating.

In abersoch there's staff in boats who absolutely bollock the clowns that enter swimmers, surfers and dinghy sections of the sea which are clearly cordoned off. Trouble is there's a lot of money there but few brains in some youngsters who are driving Ferrari type boats owned and paid for by daddy and mummy. I'm sure it's the same everywhere.

justasking111 · 25/07/2026 12:37

Anyway back to weather two hours ago the wind got up, seriously gusty. Bins blew over outside doors slammed, sky went black. I thought here we go rain incoming. It's stopped now. Humidity and temperature climbed. Please 🙏 let us have some rain. 🥹

justasking111 · 25/07/2026 13:17

It's raining 💦💦 hallelujah

GloriaSmud · 25/07/2026 15:13

EmeraldRoulette ~ DD1 ~ she's resting when she needs to and takes each day as it comes Smile

justasking111 ~ excellent news! The netweather radar is showing it and it hasn't shown rain for a looooong time!

I'm so envious @justasking111 Hopefully we'll have some over here tomorrow 🙏🏻 I've been out in the garden with my watering can and it's quite breezy. I'm noticing the sun going down earlier too.

@EmeraldRoulette I can imagine how struggling in a hot flat, and the tropical nights, are not helping recovery. I had surgery in the second week of May, so was pretty much recovered before the first heatwave, thank goodness.

GloriaSmud · 26/07/2026 06:48

We've had rain ☔~ never has small puddles of water caused such excitement! And (looking at the Netweather radar), it looks like there might be some more to come in an hour or two.

We have had a smattering of rain. And there is a lovely cool breeze.

Delatron · 26/07/2026 10:00

Jealous of the rain. I saw a dark cloud but nothing. Very windy!

HoraceCope · 26/07/2026 11:32

Exciting news
we have rain, or rather, had rain
