Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

Thoughts from Netweather (from a few days ago) and TheWeatherOutlook on what summer might have in store for us.

I actually had a bit of a procedure done, I was going to delay it but I thought as long as I’m feeling crap in this hot weather, I’ll get it done

Was a hot night as impossible to get air flow in hotel room - one window with limited opening. at least there was a fan but just moves hot air around.

It's still looking unsettled for the weekend but next week looks like it's warming up again. This is already one of those memorable (and not in a good way for some people), record-breaking summers...

Is there any end to it! Normally August is wet and chilly. I don’t mind this weather so much but anything over 27-30 is not pleasant for work and sleep and as for my tube commute it’s hideous

I do feel for you all further south, but honestly for us in the north this has been a pretty perfect Summer, apart from the lack of rain.
We have had a couple of days in the high twenties but other than that it's been very pleasant.

Not really, socks1107 <whimpers and wilts> The GFS goes as far as the 6th August at the moment and there are cooler days where there might be rain (especially for the north/Scotland) but then it heats up again.

That lack of rain is such a worry. Thames water just announced a hosepipe ban.

Yes looks like not much of a cool down now then high twenties for end of next week? For SE. I do not want to see the mid thirties again!!

It’s more like 24 and cloudy. My relief is immense! I’m hoping they’re wrong for the rest of the week. But the fact that they’re wrong so much of the time is really confusing.

@nannynick I’m amazed that you got that anywhere anywhere in Scotland. If you’re hoping for cool weather it must be incredibly disappointing.

@gingercat02 yeah it looks like it’s been lovely up north. I’ve now been up there twice this year and it’s been a normal summer for me, but people keep telling me that it’s been a really good summer for them.

I’m literally praying for normality around here.

I’m sitting around today because I brought forward a procedure that I was meant to have later - it’s a shame in a way to waste a day that’s not too hot, but I thought I might as well get it all over with while it was really shitty weather

So confusing and I will have a totally different perspective on autumn and winter now.

And again, spring seems to have completely disappeared - we went from needing several layers during the day to the May heat wave.

It was definitely a dramatic warm up in May - no real spring. I was at an outdoor event in a thick coat around the 17th May - so it was mid teens if that and raining. A few days later it was 34 degrees and unbearable!

It's been very cloudy and quite chilly so far today, although the sun is peeking through every now and then now.

I have literally put in my diary to get new portable air con and possibly shutters for next year. So I put it in for February. I find the trajectory of the sun really confusing so I am not sure when it will start to change enough to benefit me though of course shorter nights will be noticeable from end August. I thought I was NNW facing till I actually moved in! Though the compass does say that…I don’t know what direction you’d have to face to not get it - it’s no difference in winter as you never see the sun then.

The weekend is when there's a change where some places might get rain, others might not/or get drizzle but after that, it's like there's going to be a north/south split, with the north getting cooler weather/rain and the midlands/south continuing with the heat (sorry EmeraldRoulette ~ not what you want to hear.)

Reading that the Canadian fires smoke was drifting across the Atlantic causing cloud cover. Don't know how true that is. We've enough home grown fires maybe.

It's possible ~ it's quite a distance to cover if that's happening!

Seriously, you could feel the heat building at 9 am this morning. I think the forecast we had yesterday - which didn't happen - is accurate for today and it may go hotter than the 27 and sunny that they said

Meanwhile, going as far as Tuesday next week, I've got one app saying 33 and one app saying 27.

Been a nice cloudy day in NE Scotland today. Might have got to 19 degrees. I prefer this to the heat of the south. Not looking forward to returning to SE England.

Not to take over from @GloriaSmud but I think if you're in London or the south east generally then you need to look out for a horrible heat wave from the middle of next week

And to be honest, it's going to be pretty hot before so horrible for those of us in these types of homes.

This may apply to other parts of the country. I don't know. It's just stuff I've heard from My local person

@EmeraldRoulette ~ looking at the gfs, it's looking that way (especially for Wednesday with temperatures in the upper 30sC for an area roughly from S.Yorkshire southwards.) The metoffice though doesn't seem to think so ~ they think upper 20sC for that area that day (which is bad enough!) so maybe the gfs is over-doing things.....

Hoping The Met Office are right. Think the BBC (I know they are often wrong) and my phone are saying high twenties. Hoping it’s just the one GFS model that is over cooking it (as it often does? With snow too?)

I hope it's a case of overdoing things too, Delatron. The gfs does seem to throw these things in at times!

The metoffice are forecasting a 50% chance of light rain for us in the early hours of Sunday morning. We'll see if we get anything.....

This isn't really a surprise after the heatwaves we've had...

Instead of faffing around on here I'm going to report all the dry blocked drains to the County Council. They're going to flood all over the place once heavy rain arrives.
Knowing our council they'll clear them by the end of next summer once I've chased it up several times. Pray for me....

@GloriaSmud I live in North Wales. NRW are exaggerating greatly. Yes it's dry, yes we've fires on the mountains and hills thanks to rewilding and farmers being banned from maintenance up there.

NRW refusing the use of helicopters to dump water on the fires, even banning experienced pilot from doing it privately for farmers is frankly bizarre.

We've plenty of water in the reservoirs the infrastructure is groaning though.

I hope our council have cleared out the drains full of sand in Llandudno. They're reported often enough. Last time we were badly flooded.
