Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

Thoughts from Netweather (from a few days ago) and TheWeatherOutlook on what summer might have in store for us.

Things are looking about the same as yesterday morning ~ things start to change over the weekend but there's still no sign of rain....and yesterday was St. Swithin's Day...

(Blackberries are going to be excellent this year ~ we've already harvested quite a lot at the allotment.)

I saw a random article saying we could be back to 36 end of July.

I'm not sure about 36C but the GFS is still showing temperatures up around the 30C mark right at the end of July. It often isn't very accurate though that far ahead and I'm trying to hold on to the long-range forecast from the metoffice with their mention of thunderstorms and longer spells of rain....

Monday, 20th-Wednesday, 29th July
Remaining predominantly dry for most parts of the country as high pressure is likely to remain close to the UK for much of this period. However, with the source region of the air being from the North Atlantic, it will be less hot compared to many recent days. Any showers during the start of the period are more likely across the far north. Towards the latter part of July, the influence of high pressure may wane somewhat, allowing a greater chance of rain, showers or thunderstorms compared to earlier in the month, these initially more likely across the north before possibly transferring south. Overall, temperatures are expected to remain above average during this period.

Thursday,30th July-Thursday, 13th August
Perhaps a somewhat more changeable period, with the potential for showers or thunderstorms or even some longer spells of rain at times. Drier and brighter interludes are also likely, perhaps more likely across the south and southeast. Temperatures are likely to be above normal with some hot spells possible.

Weirdly I think I've acclimatised to the heat finally. My body has adjusted. The temperature in the hall was 23c at midnight. With a fan in the bedroom i slept well.

It's up to 30 here again (South Coast) - I am sick, sick,sick of this relentless heat. I'm not one given to swearing much, but I have been hurling every insult known towards the sun when I see it coming up yet again in a cloudless sky!

I so want it to rain and get cooler, not just for me, and I do actually feel really ill with this heat, but mostly for my poor dog who has been utterly miserable for days now.

@PistachioTiramisu i'm sorry you're having a hard time, but I am rather relieved that someone else is moaning. I know there are other threads on here about hot weather, but they have been hijacked by people for their own ends so I don't post on those any more.

People seem to be really enjoying it around my way and I'm baffled - though I know their pets are struggling

Again I realise the building I live in has a lot to do with this, and also most people are driving so they are probably having a very different experience of it than I am

But I woke up this morning, opened the window and had to close it again because I was letting in heat - grim. That shouldn't happen in the morning.

I'm at the stage where I'm ignoring the weather forecast because it is under estimating the temperatures every single day - and they seem to be overestimating the lows as well. There is no way it's getting as low as they say it is at night.

There's now a few hours of the day that I actually can't be in the flat because it's too hot so I have to find somewhere to go or sit in the communal garden. It's simply not practical to be forced to leave your home for that many hours a day.

I did look into the air-conditioning situation again last night, because I'm conscious the unit I have is too old to cope and it's really not coping at the full heat times

But nobody seems to have anything - also one of my neighbours has a unit that she bought just three years ago and she says that she's turning it off for a chunk of the day because it can't cope. We didn't have anything like this prolonged heat in the past. Those machines coped fine in previous years - only exception being 2018.

Anyway, I can't find anything that is in stock until the end of July and even then it's probably massively overpriced

So it's probably better for me to just put up with it and then if I order in the winter, I can get two units at a reasonable price and then have one in the bedroom and one in the living room. In a tiny flat that is a big and ridiculous sacrifice to make, but I can't see what the alternative is.

I also can't really move the unit around because the hose will fall out of the back - that unit is definitely too old. Maybe the nearer units have a more secure hose?

I saw something on Reddit where the hose was attached with magnets, but I think that might be an enterprising DIY person who sorted that

It's absolutely horrendous and there is just no way to manage it. I can get basic work tasks done and that's it. I'm literally just sitting here waiting for winter - it's awful. Especially as I hate winter, it's all very confusing.

It would really help if you could get an actual accurate weather forecast from somewhere - at least I wouldn't feel as if I was going mad and I could plan my day a bit better

I know they have 10 million explanations for how they like to measure the temperature but it's not helpful when you're hearing a ridiculous estimate that bears no resemblance to what it's like when you've actually got to live normal life in it. The best thing to do is to take the forecast and add on at least 5° to it if it's in Celsius. At at least 5°.

There was a previous year was it 2023 when they kept telling us it had been really hot when it wasn't. Whatever these people are trying to do, it's not data that serves the general public in any useful way.

This morning felt cooler, had windows open until 11am ish. Will have to see what the local weather station recorded, I think the cloud helped keep temp down. Did 5ish miles walk this afternoon and was quite nice in the shade. Hot in the sun and hot when got back to flat.

Okay, so you probably know all this already

I've just managed to find a local weather station because again, I feel as if I'm going nuts with what the forecast tells me - didn't realise that the valuable local data was actually fed in somewhere!

It's saying it was 29 today

It's saying that now it's 21 with humidity of 68%. Which explains why I can't open my windows without letting a load of disgusting thick air in. It's effectively a tropical night at that status I think isn't it? This is not something any of the forecasts have for today.

Today is the first day that I've come close to tears from this - it's like if it had snowed for 30 days and you couldn't do any of your normal stuff - absolutely horrendous.

Also, people in my building are starting to feel unwell - people in their 20s and 30s so not something that can be passed off as
"if you are young and fit, you'll be fine."

@EmeraldRoulette - totally agree with everything you say. After yet another disgusting day yesterday, the temp suddenly dropped back to 24.5 around 5.30 and it was absolutely blissful! Actually sat outdoors for a while! But had another really bad night with only 5 hours sleep - it makes me feel ill, sick and shaky, and I'm no spring chicken!

I will try to find a decent local forecast too - metoffice say it should cool off a bit over the weekend but back to high 20s/low30s AGAIN next week. This is a never-ending nightmare.

I have shed loads of tears over this too - and I used to love hot weather. I think it's the bad sleep which makes it so much worse.

The high pressure that's stuck over us just will not shift. The GFS think next weekend there might be some rain when there's a temporary break but it looks like a few days later, the high pressure comes back again. At the moment, there are occasional changes when the wind comes from a cooler direction, like from the NE/East which lowers the temperatures slightly/provides fresher air for a time but other than that, it seems to be 'business as usual' for this weather pattern.

On track for the hottest July on record?

It's also 4 years since the 40.3C temperature record was set ~ 19th July, 2022 at Coningsby, Lincolnshire.

Little bit of rain last night, the cars and the ground are still wet!. The grass.is slightly greener already.

It's cloudy and cold here. 19c in the hallway. I'm wearing a dressing gown. It feels like rain.

Like most places, the grass here is very yellow now and I've just been for a walk through some woodland and noticed that some of the undergrowth is beginning to shrivel up.

As has been the case for the last few weeks and (at the moment) applies to the next week as well, for those wanting something cooler the North, Scotland and around the coasts of Wales and Norfolk look like the places to head for.

I get twitchy in woodland after spells of drought. I'll never forget the limb drop at Kew gardens and the death.

We’ve had two limbs drop from a local street tree in the last few weeks, blocking a main road both times. Luckily nobody was hurt and it was cleared within an hour or so, but barring storms we haven’t had anything like that in years.

That's a good point regarding trees ~ you tend to think that some of these big trees and shrubs that have been growing for years, will always be there and won't suffer in dry weather/heat but they're just like any other plant and we've had such a long spell of dry weather now (although there might be other factors involved as well), that tree branches falling is the end result. I've started watering the shrubs in our garden every few days as I don't want to lose those in this dry weather.

The GFS has been hinting for a few days now that from next weekend, the high pressure that's been sitting over us for weeks now will break down/move away, bringing in some fresher weather and rain. Let's hope that's the case, even if it's for a short time....

Delatron mentioned yesterday the possibility of this year having the hottest July on record, Netweather thinks July 2026 will be in the Top 5.

I'm finding it quite lovely at the moment when I go out. We have warmth, we have coolish shade, we have a gentle but cool breeze. Only thing missing is rain, and the wildlife need it so badly.

In case i get glared at remember I can't open any windows to catch that breeze. This cat is too quick and too quiet and banned from leaving the house. Can't wait to find a new place to live as I love having windows and doors wide open in summer😩

Interesting! I don’t remember 2006 being as hot as this but I do remember it being lovely - I was younger and more heat tolerant I guess (and didn’t have a dog!).

It has cooled down enough for me now - I’m happy with mid 20s and a light breeze. Just about warm enough to sit out until about 9/10pm with no coat. But so desperate for some rain.

It's distinctly chilly this morning (I've just put the recycling out) and my weather app is telling me it's 11°

Another warm week, especially for the Midlands/Wales southwards but change is looking likely from next weekend ~ cooler and some rain (although it doesn't look like it'll be much...)

27 degrees (in hotel room), 9:30pm, East Scotland. I thought it would be colder here than in South East England but the heat seems to be coming with me!
