Storm Dave

Couldn't see a Storm Dave thread.

Hope everyone stays safe during Storm Dave. We had some rather wild winds last night here on the NE coast of England which only registered as around 18mph. Tonight, we are in the Amber zone and predicted up to 70mph. As far as I can see, the Amber zone stretches from around the south of Scotland down to Durham in NE England but goes across to the West of both those areas and seems to keep changing (Storm Dave coming from the West) Also, Northern Scotland is predicted snow and has a yellow wind warning.

Appreciate that sometimes these things come to nothing, but something tells me that this could be nasty. We have moved everything that could go mobile or cause damage.

It was really blustery here (Leicester) from early evening 'til around midnight and then it all went quiet as the storm passed. It looks like it's going to be a nice day although I've got to go to the allotment later and see how that's looking after the high winds...

Roll up a hand towel and put in letter box ,I done this when we had a rattling one

Oh that's clever! Wish I'd seen it earlier 😅😂 the wind blew the tape off!!!

In the highlands and power went at 3 am . Now have a severely autistic son freaking out , I’m 8 months pregnant and it’s snowing and feels like -13 . 😭. I have family coming and a fridge full of sea food and other foods .

Oh lordy. Sending huge hugs to you that all gets sorted ASAP.

I've just been out to survey the back / front and down the driveway after resisting watching in the early hours on the wildlife cam. I can't see anything obvious and in fact it looks like we seem to have come through unscathed. A couple of large ceramic pots have blown over as they had lavender in them, but hopefully they aren't damaged.

Its a bright, but still (normally) blustery day.

Happy Easter, all. Hope you're all safe and sound.

Mr Darcy!! 😍

How is everyone? Calm here again now I've managed to go out and hide the Easter eggs around the garden.

I remember one Easter it was hot and the eggs nearly melted so we had to get them found quick.

And another when it was so wet we had to hide them indoors instead.

Such a random weather time of year.

Wenwent camping one year at Easter in the 1980's (not sure what my parents were thinking there) and when we woke up one morning our tent was covered in snow.

Another year - the following one iiirc - we had just moved house and were all sunbathing outside in our new back garden as it was 23 degrees!

Not a great night's sleep. The wind sounded like it was going to rip our dormer off at one point and I almost leapt awake when something landed on the roof - looks like it was yet another fragment of next door's chimney.

Tiddlywinks63 · 05/04/2026 08:28

DH said it was howling through the woods behind us but, because I am deaf, I didn’t hear a thing 😁
We’re on a hillside in south Glos, not a lot between us and Wales, the wind funnels along the valley below the woods.
It’s bright sunshine now, interspersed with hailstones and sharp showers.

Salome61 · 05/04/2026 08:45

I hope everyone is OK. I’d only been in this bungalow for six months when Storm Arwen hit in 2021, it blew the flat roof off the lounge/kitchen. Three miserable months for me and my pets, absolutely awful.

I’m east coast Amble and the gusts at 2 am were frightening when I went to the bathroom. I’d laid my bins down flat and they’d been blown six foot and were lying against my car. And in my scared state I hadn’t locked the cat flap the tight way, poor puss cat was outside when I got up!

GlomOfNit · 05/04/2026 09:28

Aww, the cat who had to be forced back home by gale force winds! Grin So glad you have him back.

I should have been 'enjoying' this storm from the relative calm of the SE but we travelled up to just below Humberside for the weekend and it was bloody noisy out there! Reported gusts of 48/49mph and it sounded it. The neighbours hadn't secured their bins and they were bouncing around their yard all night, I think.

This morning (we woke a lot earlier than I'd have liked due to overexcited autistic son, who also pulled the curtains down in his bedroom last night, so not much sleep was had) the storm had blown out, the skies were burnished blue and the sunrise was beautiful (I still would rather have been asleep!). I hid little foil eggs outside and hoped DS would feel like looking for them before the sunshine melted them! But it's now mizzling gently, classic Lincs weather...

Really hope everyone who was affected gets power back quickly. It was a short and violent one!

NoWordForFluffy · 05/04/2026 09:42

I didn't see any damage to property while I was out with the dog, but small branches and twigs were all over the place in the woods.

PickAChew · 05/04/2026 09:46

I'm thankful that my autistic son only has the closed shops to be extra anxious about. Big power cut nearby.

I'm amazed Blackpool isn't on this list given it's so close to us and was wild here!

I amazed myself by going to sleep. But have woken up as I'm too hot, even though we've now been able to open the window.

I wondered that at first, but it looks like it's just central/eastern locations. I'm not far from you 👋and it was 75mph when I went to bed at 1am.

Ahhhh, that makes sense then!

👋 I'm not sure what the speed was here, but it sounded wild around that time. Thankfully it had gone round to the west by then, so was blowing across the front of the house as opposed to straight as it. We also get shelter from houses that way, whereas it's fields most of the way to Liverpool out the front!

It's weather.

I'm sure everyone will be fine.

Especially in their homes posting on the Internet about how it might get windy.

Such empathy skills ❤️

People die in this weather. Some of us are disabled , alone, perhaps with a shoddy roof or no one to help when the water mains burst or electric goes off for long periods. Why post if you're happy in your special weather proof bunker?

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 05/04/2026 10:08

All things considered I think we've got off lightly given how wild it was and the coastline from Pilling to Blackpool was on flood alert during it too (it was high tide at 1.30am!) so those fields could have turned into tidal pools! 🙀

TheeNotoriousPIG · 05/04/2026 10:25

I was amazed to find the garden still in one piece this morning, bar a few plant pots blown over! It's like a wind tunnel at the back of the house.

The wind obviously unsettled a lot of the cows on the local farms. Ours were so tired that it took them a lot longer to get up this morning, and the ones on a nearby robotic milking farm hadn't been milked at all overnight. I was glad that we kept ours in overnight last night, because they hate the wind and rain, and any change really unsettles them!

That was meant as a reply to my neighbour @NoWordForFluffy!

More or less intact here phew 😊 but so tired a nap might be in order 😴

Well said. And the fact that this is actually a Weather thread....

Siouxtse1 · 05/04/2026 11:17

Looks sunny outside, but tall white and dark grey clouds still scudding along quite quickly- definitely breezy.

Built a shed in the week- it's survived intact and because of where we placed it, it's sheltered all 5 of our wheelie bins from blowing over. Yay!

Husband got back about 20 mins later than usual last night. He said the worst bit was driving around at the bottom of the hill because loads of people hadn't secured their bins and they were whizzing about/ tipping in the wind.

There was a short power cut between 1am and 2am. They only did remedial work to try and prevent power cuts last week!

CoastalCalm · 05/04/2026 11:56

Literally just fixed glass from last storm in greenhouse this week and cleared all the glass ready for coming season and woke to two panes gone , could have cried ! Then message to say our huge brassica cages at the allotment were a mangled mess in neighbouring plot ffs

I agree. I've seen far worse damage from what felt like lesser wind speeds.

Wellfuckme · 05/04/2026 14:19

I lost a roof ridge tile which has smashed a few of the garage roof tiles on the way down before landing on my car. Scratched paint work but at least its not smashed the windscreen.

danglethedingle · 05/04/2026 14:22

Seem to have survived ok, but there's a hell of a lot of blossom blown off the pear and apple trees. Its very pretty, the garden looks like there was a wedding, but I suspect it will affect my fruit crop. Which to be fair isn't huge as i only have 3 trees that actually have any fruit on them.

Acutissima · 06/04/2026 19:36

@Siouxtse1 wait wait waaaait... I must have clarification on the five wheelie bins please 😁

FIVE?! As in , one less than six actual bins? Are they all general rubbish bins, or are recycling ones also under the majestic umbrella of Five Bins? As someone with a massive family, that's an impressive and covetable amount of bins, I got excited at having two 😂
