The start of meteorological Summer 2025 (1st June)

This weekend sees the start of meteorological summer.
Netweather haven't got their summer forecast yet but have some thoughts here on what sort of summer we might expect.

TheWeatherOutlook published their summer forecast a few weeks ago.

(I think that although we've had a dry spring, it'll be a 'mixed' summer of dry/warm (maybe hot days), mixed in with wet days. So we'll see......)

Unsettled start to June likely, but how may the rest of summer play out?

Ahead of the Netweather Summer 2025 forecast, we look at some the clues that point to how the summer may turn out after a likely unsettled start to June.

I've just walked in. Based in the Southeast. No breeze outside. Hopefully it's coming this way!

socks1107 · 01/07/2025 21:15

We are still outside. It feels cooler out here and very pleasant

justasking111 · 01/07/2025 21:46

Nor westerlies so hopefully coming everyone's way. I've a rug over my knees and wearing a big fluffy cardigan this evening.

EmeraldRoulette · 02/07/2025 00:27

Air has arrived in my neck of the woods, phew.

gingercat02 · 02/07/2025 08:11

Rain again last night and still drizzling now. NEE coast

Delatron · 02/07/2025 08:52

Much cooler here. I mean yesterday was far too hot but I do miss sitting in the garden in the sun eating my breakfast. A more gradual decline would have been preferable!

We need the rain though..

socks1107 · 02/07/2025 12:57

We had storm at 3am. Thunder and very very heavy rain. The humidity is dying out in London now so it feels pleasant

RainbowZebraWarrior · 02/07/2025 16:15

We had a very heavy downpour here on the NE Coast of England at school pickup time. Lots of localised flooding. Its still over Berwick and Southern / Eastern Scotland now, but heading out to sea and that looks to be the end of it from the rain radar map, but crikey it was crazy.

As usual, it's nice outside, but the flat won't let go of heat

I'm now trying to work out whether it's worth sorting out proper blinds now. I nearly did a post asking a science person to help me with this - but these days you get so many crazy answers on this website.

I should know this as it's my second year here, but I think that in about six weeks time the Sun hitting the window will be much less of a problem in the evening.

Anyone who can do those heat helping blinds (made to measure) is likely to have a six week lead time anyway aren't they? So I kind of missed the boat. Should've sorted it out ages ago.

Currently trying to make sense of sun trajectory diagrams online.

it's been such an unpleasant few days, I just focused on staying in the communal garden after work. But that's actually quite inconvenient to do all summer. Today I've noticed just how much the glass heats up. I do have blackout curtains but there's a big wide gap between the windows and the curtains if you see what I mean. So the sensible thing to do is to cover the windows to stop the heat.

It is sad having to be as heat obsessed as we are in new build flats!

RainbowZebraWarrior · 03/07/2025 07:16

Really cold here this morning. 7 degrees and condensation on the inside of the windows like a winters morn. It's rather nice actually. Weird, but nice and cool and fresh. Winter jumper on then!

gingercat02 · 03/07/2025 07:54

I believe you're near me @RainbowZebraWarrior it's a beautiful sunny morning here

Yes I'm Whitley Bay. The sun is glorious now, it was just really cold first thing like a bright winter morning.

Delatron · 03/07/2025 09:08

That sounds really tough. Are there any temporary type blackout blinds that you could use in the meantime?

WitchesofPainswick · 03/07/2025 09:20

@EmeraldRoulette My house sounds similar - an air con unit makes the biggest difference. I don't have that awful situation anymore of cool outside and hot inside.

I also have an assortment of blinds including some Bamboo ones from Habitat/Argos that I've hung OUTSIDE my windows with S-hooks on the guttering - I keep them up for the hot days. I also use rolls of silver bubble wrap sometimes, cut to the size of the window and jam it into the window on the outside so it shades it. Not elegant but quick and effective.

EmeraldRoulette · 03/07/2025 23:17

@Delatron yes and I think I've got some blackout lining fabric hanging around somewhere but not sure where. Sadly it's probably in one of many boxes in mum's garage.

I'm curious about these honeycomb blinds, so I might actually get the stick on ones from Amazon. Then I know if it's worth investing for the window to be done properly.

@WitchesofPainswick I absolutely agree with you that hanging something outside is best. But I would need a scaffold up to do that.

In my old flat, in the 2018 heatwave, I stuck a load of cardboard to the window. That was incredibly helpful. But I feel a bit self-conscious doing that here. In the previous flat I was on a very high floor and literally nobody could see into the window. Here, my opposite neighbour would be looking at it. 😂

It is looking like 28, 29° next week here. I'm hoping to go away for a couple of days next week, but the weather forecast is showing that going on for quite some time.

It's funny, when people said to me that we didn't have a nice summer last summer, I was puzzled because I thought it was lovely here. I guess they were wanting 30°. I think we had lots of 25° and sunny last year and it was very nice. I did have to run the air con, but I wasn't obsessing over window coverings.

Once again, I had to spend a chunk of the evening in the garden and I was genuinely amazed how much it had cooled down outside because it's just not registering in here.

Delatron · 04/07/2025 11:35

I hope you can find a solution @EmeraldRoulette it does look to be heating back up from next Tuesday/Wednesday and then just sticking around. Wondering whether to bite the bullet and just buy an air con unit (though I broke the last one so DH says no!)

I'd be launching my DH into the sun if he tried to say that I couldn't have another one. Things get broken, damaged. Has he never had a ding in his car, broken tool, garden stuff.

I tell mine you're not my parent, I'm not a child when he tries this on.

Delatron · 04/07/2025 12:50

Yeah that’s a good point @justasking111 He claims that I broke it by not cleaning it out/reading the instructions then I didn’t send it back when it was still under warranty…

However, I need to sleep! So I may just throw money at it and he can be as cross as he likes…

Exackerly Delatron. But do read the instructions this time 😂😂

Mind you I followed the cleaning instructions on the air fryer, cleaned it thoroughly after every use it still went kaput.

Delatron · 04/07/2025 14:30

😂 I know I don’t think he’d forgive a second time. These things do just break sometimes.

Currently browsing air con units as my local Facebook weather guys are hinting of a prolonged spell of hot weather similar to 2022. When I last had air con to get me through it!

👍. If I didn't live in wet cool Wales we'd have one

socks1107 · 04/07/2025 16:24

I keep seeing people talk about 40degrees again next weekend? Is that true ( I ask in utter panic!)

Delatron · 04/07/2025 16:40

Yes I have heard that being banded about. Can only hope it changes. Think it will definitely be warm but they just don’t know how warm. Some of the charts I have seen shared are saying 40. Ridiculousl. Hopefully this will not materialise.

Delatron · 04/07/2025 16:47

I think it’s only one chart showing that. I’m hoping the temperatures top out at 29/30. That is just about manageable though I’d prefer cooler for day to day life.

Celestiel · 04/07/2025 17:38

I’ve got Ventusky and metcheck suggesting ridiculous 30+ temperatures for next weekend in North Dorset - looks to be quite widespread across the whole of England…
