Why was the warning so late to make sure people went to work

The Met Office certainly wouldn't withhold warnings so that people go to work, they are a forecasting agency, not the government. Although this scenario did show in the models yesterday, it was low probability and probably didn't meet the threshold for an earlier warning. That's the thing with probabilities, sometimes the less likely outcomes happen.

https://www.itv.com/news/meridian/2024-01-02/traffic-being-stopped-at-dartford-crossing-due-to-excessively-strong-winds An awful lot of disruption I'm afraid. Check your journeys home.

Jakers you're being hammered, it's south of us this time. Keep safe all

MargaretThursday · 02/01/2024 18:33

Very few trains running into London (we had tickets booked) had a chat with a lovely guard who suggested driving to Richmond and getting trains from there which seems to be working.
We may have extra passengers in the car going back though. Loads of friends stuck at Waterloo.

Part of the roof came off some flats as well - not for the first time in a storm either. Glad I don't live there....

JenniferBooth · 02/01/2024 19:47

Scaffolding has collapsed in more than one place. Why the fuck dont they secure it properly We have had these kinds of storms for ten years now. Its not as if they dont know they could happen.

JenniferBooth · 02/01/2024 20:29

So am i It seems better

GloriaSmud · 02/01/2024 20:36

ZeViteVitchofCwismas ~ I think the worst of it has passed and conditions should begin to ease now.

Rain has finally stopped here (Leicester) ~ hopefully things can dry out a bit now.

RafaistheKingofClay · 02/01/2024 22:53

Not sure there’s much sign of drying out down here. Forecast says increasing likelihood of heavy rain overnight with frequent showers often heavy tomorrow.

May start building an ark soon.

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 02/01/2024 23:01

Rafa.. I'll join you with the arc.

Well our village is an island, as are the three next to us. The River Sence is much higher than its highest recorded level. Lots of houses flooded. Difficult day in South Leicestershire yet I haven't seen anything reported in the national news.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/01/2024 07:48

General information about flooding, thousands of people without power, travel disruption were all mentioned on radio 4 news this morning. Its not confined to one county or one region. There are currently 331 flood warnings in England.

I agree that it should be higher up in the news agenda though.

Storm Henk. Amber warnings issued.

It will get much drier from this weekend, for all. With high pressure set to build over us.

Because the ground is saturated I'm afraid risk will transfer to fog, freezing fog and ice. But it will make a change and allow things to dry out some.

Loads of localised flooding in the north of Notts - where the ground was still absolutely soaked from previous flooding. We seem OK - apart from the cellar pump which is running pretty much full time at present (electric bill from the drying out for the last bit of flooding was over £100 - insurance have a little meter on the dehumidifiers to reimburse us for it) but we were turfed out of our work base yesterday so they could get the flood barriers out - it's a building with those posh barriers that slot into place as it's been previously almost destroyed by floods and is in a risky area.

I'm leicestershire too and had a nightmare journey home due to all the big puddles/floods out. South of the city though and it was mostly drained away by this morning. Don't think that will be the case in the north around Barrow and Sileby!
