Exeter airport has seen a gust of 81mph and the Needles (very exposed) 92mph. Some very strong gusts likely in the amber area likely over the next few hours, including in London over early rush hour.

That might explain why the cover from next door’s canoe is in my garden.

dodobookends · 02/01/2024 16:17

Rather windy here in Bedfordshire now.

catscatscurrantscurrants · 02/01/2024 16:25

Raining like mad all day in South Yorkshire, the roads around my area have flooded and the drains can't cope.

Notquitegrownup2 · 02/01/2024 16:28

My dh wants to ask you wise ladies why wind gusts rather than blows continuously . . .

(It's the first time he's ever shown an interest in Mumsnet after 21 years!!)

CaveMum · 02/01/2024 16:34

Of course I have tempted the wrath of the whatever from high atop the thing and the wind has now picked up and it's raining again. There was also a strange rumbling noise that I couldn't figure out where it was coming from - turns out it is DH snoring in the living room 🙄

JenniferBooth · 02/01/2024 16:36

The warning came bloody late. People are going to struggle to get home from work

Klingfilm · 02/01/2024 16:39

Trains are looking abysmal on south western. Very glad I'm working from home today!

Glittertwins · 02/01/2024 16:40

The wind has really picked up here now, we're on the edge of the amber warning. Was very calm and dry early this morning. Then came the rain and now the wind. I'm using the Christmas tree against the outdoor table to prevent the cover from blowing up and off from one end and have weighted the top down. Fingers crossed

JenniferBooth · 02/01/2024 16:41

Ive just seen a towns Christmas tree swaying badly A lot of towns still have their trees up Its only 2nd Jan

Squirrelsnut · 02/01/2024 16:44

I'm in North Oxfordshire and it's bonkers out there. Bin day too..

Lindy2 · 02/01/2024 16:52

It's very windy in Surrey now.

I just came out of a supermarket and several items in my trolley literally blew away across the carpark! Luckily other shoppers helped me chase after them. I got everything back apart from the receipt which was last seen flying over the hedge at about 100 mph. 🙈

Lonelycrab · 02/01/2024 16:58

Haha bin day here, they were all emptied earlier on and they’re now all over the shop out the front on the communal driveway!

I’m in west Essex (TfL zone 6) and I think the worst of the wind has passed, it’s definitely quieter than an hour ago, though still a bit blustery.
I really hope we get a dry few weeks now, my garden is sodden, the local park is flooded, the ground just can’t absorb any more water and I’ve got a dehumidifier running constantly so my laundry stands a chance of drying.
Has the last year been wetter than average? It certainly feels it from a humidity/damp/mould perspective for me.

Vicliz24 · 02/01/2024 17:29

It's absolutely dreadful here just outside Nottingham. Streets are flooded in town . It's not stopped all day after it rained most of the night . Our river has gone over for the 4th time in six weeks.

Vebrithien · 02/01/2024 17:35

On the Somerset/Bath border, seriously windy earlier. Had to rescue the newly liberated recycling bins from halfway along the street. Made me regret my choice of a nice, sensible, long skirt. Felt like I was wearing a bloody sail!

Just had a message to say that the road to DS's nursery is flooded, so got to take a different country road to collect him.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 02/01/2024 17:35

Scaffolding came down in town local to me.

JustforAlice · 02/01/2024 17:38

Husband at London Bridge and seems like the rest of the world are too - very few trains running. Don't think he is going to make it home :(

SoRainbowRhythms · 02/01/2024 17:40

Awful here in SE London - neighbours fence all over my garden, ours is hanging in by a thread!

Income · 02/01/2024 17:43

It's actually quite scary here in Surrey at the moment.

Cats are very put out. Wind always makes them crazy.

Yes my son is there too🤨Trying to get back to Tunbridge Wells.

ProfessorPeppy · 02/01/2024 17:48

@Squirrelsnut me too. Our village - plus surrounding villages - just had a power outage for a couple of hours due to a fallen power line.

I drove home from South Oxfordshire along the A34 earlier and it was treacherous. I drove through flood water, flying debris and felled trees. It’s the worst journey I’ve ever made.

JenniferBooth · 02/01/2024 17:51

Why was the warning so late to make sure people went to work

Starch1e · 02/01/2024 17:52

Just been looking at pictures of downed scaffolding on local Twitter.

Glad I'm not at work as too much disruption on SE trains - sorry to hear you have stuck people @JustforAlice and @doggiedude

Discovered http://starlingsroost.ddns.net/weather/ukobs/maxgust_map.php

Exeter airport still winning with 81mph gust, Heathrow at no.5 with 69mph.

I'm on the Essex coast. Just driven to collect my DD from her friend's house a 5 min drive away and had to stop twice to clear obstructions that had blown into the road ( one Xmas tree that been put out for collection and one large plastic bin. Lots of tree branches down too.

Then drove DD to an appointment in town and there was a large tree that had come down on the seafront - luckily on the other side of the road. Went to park where I usually do and thought better of it when I saw that all the parked cars were covered in broken branches.

I'm now sitting in the car being rocked by the wind while I wait for DD to finish her appointment.
