While for many it is milder today, it will become colder again tomorrow. The main snow risk starts on Thursday where both GFS and ECM show a risk of snow in the south into the midlands and Wales, away from south eastern coastal counties. They both model a low moving in from the Azores, bumping into cold air.

GFS takes this right into northern England and parts of Scotland.

As always, early days and so there is lots of uncertainty. We await the next model run

In the pictures I saw, the over-nighters at JL did look very cosy

Fingers crossed, but I've never been caught out by snow. We keep stuff in the car for just in case, though.

Yes @Vegemiteandhoneyontoast must have been so strange. I had a google and it was 2009! I bet JL really looked after everyone though!

DH’s Aunty got stranded near Henley and had to abandon her car and walk miles home in the snow. It really came down thick and fast out of nowhere catching lots of people out.

It took us 3 hours to get along the West Wycombe Road that night. My MIL had died, and we had been to the funeral directors to finalise details, and by the time we had left, High Wycombe was at a standstill.

Horrendous drive home as we live on top of a hill in a village just outside HW and through sheer grit and determination we got up the hill to get home.

I can have snow on my hill which cuts us off but down in the valley there isn't any.

That’s sounds so tricky! Yes its
funny round here - often snow on the hills and a mile away there’s nothing. I’m normally on the nothing side!

I think watching the skies is our best bet. So marginal in this country and hard to forecast.

I remember (was it 2010?) when no snow was forecast and London and Home Counties had a massive dumping and people got stuck and had to sleep overnight in John Lewis High Wycombe - cars abandoned everywhere.

I think it might have been 2009. Was that a Sunday you're thinking of? If so, my friend was in out drinking in Soho and I rang her to tell her to get home quickly. She was very puzzled to hear me saying this at 4pm or some such with no prior warnings issued.

She got home about an hour before the Tube shut and a bus overturned somewhere in South London.

but there were also dreadful snow dumps in 2010. Meh.

snow for coming week has vanished from three forecasts for my area - really hope that's correct. But as I remember the suddenness of those years as well, I remain pessimistic and plan accordingly!

LoreleiG · 13/01/2024 21:46

I remember that - I was at work and someone said it was snowing and I barely looked as we only ever usually get five minutes of a flurry. In about half an hour the entire town was gridlocked. In a town near me people and to sleep in their offices and people abandoned their cars and walked home.

Now, if it snows a few flakes and I am in the office I leave pronto!

bizzey · 13/01/2024 22:03

I still have nightmares about that 2009 blizzard !
When a pp mentioned 2010 ...I thought straight away ..nope ..it was 2009 !

I was on the M40 ..I was going to pull off at Oxford services ...but the tail back for the turnoff was not looking promising!

I continued home somehow...back to London..
Got in , sat on the stairs and promptly burst into tears !

The next day I was supposed to driving DM to the big supermarket for some shopping.
I said I can't get in the car ....I am not in the right frame of mind to do any driving today !

I had bruises on my lips where I had been bitting them so hard during the drive !!!

Was the most scariest drive I have ever done ... didn't help that the heater was broken in my car ..and I was cold as well.

I remember it too! I went out and got stuck in the car for 8 hours and missed the whole of my husband's 30th birthday! I felt so bad!

EmmaEmerald · 13/01/2024 22:22

I have been tedious and looked this up

the Sunday I'm thinking of was 1st Feb 2009. That was my worst snow experience, I was living in a very old and very cold building, single glazing, not enough heating, and the flat didn't warm up for a fortnight. The walk to and from the Tube took forever as it was solidly icy for several days after. I worked long hours but the office was so much warmer than my flat.

by the next snowfall of that year, - Nov or Dec - I was living in my much loved newer build very very warm home which I just left last year. I was still pissed off at all the snow but at least I could get home and be warm.

I think that was a Thursday or Friday that people slept in shops and got stuck on motorways.

I'm sure I remember a Saturday morning as well....my neighbours headed out to the airport and the snow came down so fast, they turned round and came back...it was the right thing to do as people slept at Heathrow for a couple of nights maybe?

hopefully warning systems have advanced a lot?!

bizzey · 13/01/2024 22:37

My local weather was saying snow for Tuesday..then it changed to wednesday...and now it has disappeared completely and beautiful sunshine is forecast for the whole week !!

justasking111 · 13/01/2024 23:27

It'll happen tomorrow. How do I know?
Because the family have booked a country pub lunch in the hills tomorrow 🙄

KylieKangaroo · 13/01/2024 23:38

I feel like the last few heavy snow days we had was when they didn't predict it at all! Every time they say it is going to snow it ends up not happening.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/01/2024 06:58

Snow showers pushing into northern Scotland today, giving accumulation in places. These look set to contiunue tomorrow and Northern Ireland is also at risk of settling snow.

Tuesday theres a risk of some prolonged snowfall in parts of Scotland and perhaps northern England hills.

After that. Not got the foggiest! GFS brings back in Winter Wonderland into thìe south on Wednesday. ICON follows suit to a lesser extent. Other models keep the offending low pressure to the south of us.

It looks reasonably likely that mild mobile weather returns from next weekend, but there are signals that the weather may turn colder again as we go into Feb.

Oooh some exciting typos in that last post. Grin

Almost as exciting as the weather, OYBBK Grin

They've gone into overdrive on the Netweather messageboard again. Yesterday it was one of their, 'it's all a disaster, winter's over' days but seeing the GFS and a few of the other model runs overnight, it's got them all excited again! But the ECM has Wednesday's system heading off into France so it's all gone quiet again.

justasking111 · 14/01/2024 07:35

Friends outside NYC have a sprinkling, in Colorado a good showing.

hoochycrone · 14/01/2024 09:58

Ooo met office warning for snow for W Yorks just now. Dare I hope??? 🛷🛷🛷

Ooh son in Farsley. His sled here 🙈

Posypointshoes · 14/01/2024 11:07

My little nephew is getting very excited about building a snowman, I think he may be disappointed.
we had one snowflake for Chelmsford and a weather warning and now no warning and brilliant sunshine all week with temps getting down to minus 2 according to met officw.
im hoping it changes as he will be thrilled if we get some

GloriaSmud · 14/01/2024 11:46

I'm wondering whether parts of the SW, south coast and SE might get a snow warning from midday-ish on Wednesday ~ depends what a weather system is going to do that models have had a bit of trouble with.

justasking111 · 14/01/2024 12:41

Blue patches and sun out here 🤷‍♀️

EmmaEmerald · 14/01/2024 12:47

One website has put snow back on for Wednesday.

Snow, off to France with you then! (Sorry if you're in France and hate snow).
