While for many it is milder today, it will become colder again tomorrow. The main snow risk starts on Thursday where both GFS and ECM show a risk of snow in the south into the midlands and Wales, away from south eastern coastal counties. They both model a low moving in from the Azores, bumping into cold air.

GFS takes this right into northern England and parts of Scotland.

As always, early days and so there is lots of uncertainty. We await the next model run

Thanks Gloria 🥰

EmmaEmerald ~ if you watch the '10 day Trend' video from the metoffice in the link above, it looks like N. Wales across the middle of the country, southwards is their 'likely scenario' at the moment but with the emphasis on anything happening being a week away.

hoochycrone ~ Xmas Smile << woolly hats will be needed and sledges might get some use yet!

Latest update from the metoffice....

Tuesday 16th-Thursday, 25th January
Cold with wintry showers affecting northwestern coasts, with showers moving inland especially in the north, clearer in the south. Potential for more persistent snow through Tuesday in the northwest. There is risk of unsettled weather pushing in from the south through midweek, potentially leading to areas of snow and sleet where it meets the colder air across the country. Confidence is low regards the timing of the arrival of any such disturbance, but there is an increasing risk of something potentially disruptive at some point in this period. Widespread frosts continue by night with wintry showers from the northwest between further potential pulses of snow as weather fronts move in from the west these likely drawing in milder conditions by next weekend.

EmmaEmerald · 11/01/2024 15:24

@GloriaSmud Thanks for the written summary, I'm not a fan of videos so really appreciate that 🤗

I tend to just look at the weather for my postcode but that is changing hourly even for the weekend.

I shall get off this thread as it's increasing my dread. Mum has a big food delivery coming at the weekend so should be okay.

hoochycrone · 11/01/2024 17:18

Ah, hope springs eternal ⛄️

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2024 21:47

Looks like there could be a chance for snow in some northern areas on Monday too.

By northern do you mean Scotland or northern England?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2024 06:07

As I've said, at the moment any sort of details are really sketchy at the moment. They change from model to model. This is often the case with snow, even close to the time. However, I mean both.

Wednesdays snow in both GFS/ECM just grazes the channel in the overnight model runs. This keeps us in the cold air but removes the heavy snow from southern areas. But there's still time for that to change.

We might get flurries they're saying now. So disappointed.

GloriaSmud · 12/01/2024 15:06

Latest update from the metoffice (and it sounds like they're having trouble working out where/if snow might fall mid-week as well!)

Wednesday 17th-26th January
Staying very cold through next week. Northerly winds will bring snow showers inland at times, these most frequent across northern Scotland. Many inland areas will be mainly dry with a good deal of clear/bright weather. During Wednesday there is a chance of an area of snow moving across parts of southern England and Wales for a time though confidence is currently low in the behaviour of this system. Towards the end of the week or more likely over next weekend, the start of a transition back to less cold conditions is likely as Atlantic systems start to arrive from the west brining spells of rain and strong winds. Whilst conditions should gradually turn milder, this transition brings the chance of spells of snow.

I have a work thing I don’t want to do to, In Sheffield on Weds. travelling across from Liverpool. What are the chances I cancel due to snow?????? Praying for it!

justasking111 · 12/01/2024 18:02

Anglesey schools sent out a message to all parents yesterday. They said that weather conditions, snow would mean that a message might go out and you would be asked to collect your children within half an hour if required.

The snow queen has nabbed it all for Narnia

Posypointshoes · 12/01/2024 23:19

Love this thread.
I’m in Essex and hoping for some snow days but our local forecast is showing nothing of the sort at the moment

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/01/2024 07:32

Silly GFS and ECM have that low going too far south mid week, no snow for the south presently. Boo hiss! Snow showers in northern areas though for the first half of the week.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 13/01/2024 08:16

Well for the first time we do have a snowflake on the BBC weather forecast for south.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 13/01/2024 08:18

Just quickly checked again and it's gone.

Boo, hiss, indeed.

RafaistheKingofClay · 13/01/2024 09:14

Last night I had snow for Weds and now it’s gone again. Booo

Dogcatmousecat · 13/01/2024 11:12

I just think that snow is so hard to forecast and it changes hourly with the predictions! All I know is that we have been caught out in the SE where no snow forecast and then a complete whiteout. Shall just watch the skies instead .
I missed my sons graduation in Dec 22 because the snow was heavier and longer than the flurries forecast .

Delatron · 13/01/2024 12:32

I think watching the skies is our best bet. So marginal in this country and hard to forecast.

I remember (was it 2010?) when no snow was forecast and London and Home Counties had a massive dumping and people got stuck and had to sleep overnight in John Lewis High Wycombe - cars abandoned everywhere.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 13/01/2024 13:02

I remember that, @Delatron especially the people sleeping in the beds department, all tucked up under brand new quilts. What a strange experience that must have been.

Delatron · 13/01/2024 13:09

Yes @Vegemiteandhoneyontoast must have been so strange. I had a google and it was 2009! I bet JL really looked after everyone though!

DH’s Aunty got stranded near Henley and had to abandon her car and walk miles home in the snow. It really came down thick and fast out of nowhere catching lots of people out.
