While for many it is milder today, it will become colder again tomorrow. The main snow risk starts on Thursday where both GFS and ECM show a risk of snow in the south into the midlands and Wales, away from south eastern coastal counties. They both model a low moving in from the Azores, bumping into cold air.

GFS takes this right into northern England and parts of Scotland.

As always, early days and so there is lots of uncertainty. We await the next model run

Thank you OYBBK.
We don't mind rollercoaster posts!

justasking111 · 10/01/2024 09:37

OYBBK we've had our sleds since the early 2000s. Stored away for the grandchildren first born 2016 they've never seen heavy snow. Every year I hope they will get some use 🙏

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2024 10:29

I still have our sled from when dd was little. Dh sometimes asks if we can get rid of it and even now I say no, in the hope that I can use it again to slide down the hills for bringing groceries home.

I think, looking at latest model output, that return to mild is the least likely option currently and that we will either have the snow battleground scenario, or a colder, blocked scenario, with 'pop up' small scale snow events.

My opinion may of course be different after this evenings model runs. Wink

Am in South East and it is the coldest I have felt for years ! Still quite a covering of snow everywhere.

EmmaEmerald · 10/01/2024 17:09

Are we treating this as the current weather thread?

Happily the week forecast currently doesn't look like snow!

nannynick · 10/01/2024 18:14

Perhaps on Monday we should have a new thread, for the possible Snow Event.

GloriaSmud · 10/01/2024 18:43

Latest from the metoffice for next week ~ still going for an "increasing risk of something potentially disruptive...."

Monday, 15th-24th January
Often cloudy across clearing central and southern areas at first. Thereafter, turning colder from the North, with brisk northerly winds likely developing widely across of the UK, bringing a risk of snow showers, most frequent across the north. Temperatures remaining cold, and a marked wind chill especially in the north. There is risk of unsettled weather pushing in from the south through this period, which could lead to a band of snow and sleet where it meets the colder air across the country. Confidence is low with regards the timing of the arrival of any such disturbance, but there is an increasing risk of something potentially disruptive at some point in this period. Widespread frosts continue to be a feature by night, with a risk of ice in places.

This is a very basic question, but when it says "northerly" winds, does it mean blowing from the north or to the north?

(Ditto Mary Poppins and the east wind)

Wind directions on weather forecasts relate to the direction they are coming from.

When we moved into our current house I found a fantastic proper wooden sled hiding behind the shed ! We live near a hill so every year I think maybe this year it will get an outing but so far it's still not had one! I continue to live in hope

SquirmOfEels · 10/01/2024 20:00

Thank you!

That's lovely, I'd check that it's not rotted and polish up the runners 🛷 wheee

As RZW says. If you forget, just remember that northerlies are cold.

Thanks oh you bad!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2024 08:58

No probs Will.

Models are playing hokey cokey with the snow. Last time I looked this morning GFS (I think! It was early) was shoving the snow through France, keeping us on the cold side of the air. Good for cold lovers, sad for southern/modlands snow lovers.

EmmaEmerald · 11/01/2024 10:19

I can't remember the last time it was this cold darn sarf but Kitten probably knows the answer!

CrunchyCarrot · 11/01/2024 10:48

Already seen the headlines of Snowmageddon, so often these events get ramped up then don't materialise. Got an appointment in the next town to get to on Weds so really don't want an avalanche of white stuff, even though I do love it.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 11/01/2024 11:03

Temps at the minute are surely very typical for the time of year? Appreciate that the Northerly winds make it feel slightly colder.

I'm one of those weird Northerners who hasn't actually worn a coat yet this winter. We haven't seen anything severe, yet. It's been quite a mild winter so far. I've only had to use my grit twice so far for frosty mornings, but we've not had any real minus temps yet. I think it was this time last year we had minus 7.

Anyway, I've noticed the forecast now seems to be indicating snow starting next Tuesday for us here in North East England. Will be interesting to see if that firms up as we head into the weekend.

<toddles off to check grit bin>

EmmaEmerald · 11/01/2024 11:41

@RainbowZebraWarrior I'm in the southeast.

I don't drive so I might be a bit obsessed by temps. But I definitely don't remember being really pissed off at walking to the corner shop, as an example, for quite a few years. That said, I "missed" a lot of last winter due to mum being very ill. I do remember the early December snowfall in 2022.

But I don't remember feeling the wind was really stinging and I got out for a walk most days last winter. This will be the fourth day in a row that I really don't want to. It is meant to be better this afternoon because it will cloud over.

I'm in a new home so can't compare internal temps for me, but I have honestly not seen mum's house get this cold for years.

Also, looking ahead, I can't see any let up. I tend to remember more because of a winter birthday too.

what day is Snowmageddon due? Happily none of my forecasts have it and mum and are very much hoping it doesn't happen.
