This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

Parts of France and Holland are smack bang in the centre of the low looking at one model.

We're escaping the worst of the winds but we really don't need more rain. The land is saturated, flood warnings on rivers. Farmers will be moving animals away to higher ground now.

We've no school this week thankfully.

WreckTangled · 31/10/2023 16:27

We’re on the south coast and ds goes to school 20 miles away (dh takes him) dd 12 miles away public bus. Obviously we want everyone to be safe but I know if schools were to close they likely won’t let us know until we’ve all left the house. Our LA are notoriously shit at making decisions like this (the last storm the were the last county of four to say schools needed to close). Met office is showing gusts of 50mph though which don’t seem anywhere near as bad as some. We’ve already got a big main stretch of road closed due to flooding nearby (a big one with all the supermarkets along it) more rain is the last thing we need.

Because we have to go to work…

well, if the weather is too bad to send your children to school, one of you would have to take the day off

WreckTangled · 31/10/2023 17:16

Why are you being so snippy? 🥴 goodness me.

MrsMarzetti · 31/10/2023 17:19

Oh what fun, i fly to France on Thursday 😢

PlipPlopChoo · 31/10/2023 17:40

Why are you being so snippy?

I think she is cutting to the chase. If your LA are shit for making decisions then take the matter out of their hands. Make your own decision and one of you take a day off work if needed.

I'm not, I just dont understand what your problem is, just judge for yourself. If the weather looks too bad to send your children in, or bad enough for the school to close, just keep them home, and one of you stay with them. Thats all.

Sideorderofchips · 31/10/2023 17:44

Jersey is under red warning for Thursday. Schools are closed

They may also be closed depending on damage.

Coast roads being closed from 5.30pm tomorrow

It's pretty scary here

WreckTangled · 31/10/2023 17:45

I don’t have a problem, I wasn’t asking advice just making conversation.

Fellow Penwithians and other Corns, it looks as though the "exciting" bit might be about 5am on Thursday, when after the eye goes through and it switches from SE to NW. The tide has dropped down a bit from this week, but the high tide will have a lot of surge behind it, I should think, especially on the north coast. I hope people are sensible about storm watching.

That's a screenshot of possible gusts not steady wind speed.

Holy cricket 😮 that'll be a ride awakening

AdoraBell · 31/10/2023 17:50

Somerset here, amber warning for tomorrow.

Fingers crossed for everyone.

Cornwallsfaveflappyj · 31/10/2023 17:51

rude awakening*

So glad I don't work Thursdays.

JenniferBooth · 31/10/2023 18:31

MyCircumference · 31/10/2023 18:45

strong gale predicted on thursday

Pushkinini · 31/10/2023 18:46

Fellow Kernow dweller here. I work right on the north coast and live a little inland. I've decided to work from home on Thursday although I reckon the waves will be spectacular. Not silly enough to take the risk though!

SilverGlitterBaubles · 31/10/2023 20:08

Southern Rail and Thameslink advising

'You should work from home on Thursday if you can, avoiding any non-essential journeys particularly early on Thursday morning'

Also speed restrictions and warnings of disruption to services.

The report generated in the Washington Post sounds pretty worrying. I am wondering why there isn't more news coverage in the UK

Severe Weather Europe:

What is the scale on it?

WestwardHo1 · 31/10/2023 20:58

I'm slightly apprehensive.

Hopefully the Washington Post are just being a bit dramatic

Donutface2 · 31/10/2023 21:16

I’ve got to get into London by train for a much needed operation on Thursday. This is really adding to my considerable stress.
