This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

Can I derail slightly by asking what are the criteria for a storm being named, and where do the names come from?

(also what kind of name was Babet?)

I assume Babet is an alternate spelling of Babette which is a beautiful 50s retro style name (variant of Barbara).

I've just seen another local video that's really got to (pregnant, hormonal) me. It's taken from a baby monitor and the bedroom window shatters over the next to me cot.

Mum snatches the baby out of the way like she's a superhero and they've been safely evacuated apparently but it's really upsetting Sad

She was so amazing! The way she scooped her baby up and out of harms way! It must have been terrifying.

Another MNetter from Jersey: It is quite strange outside - it is like there has been a snowstorm but with sand, it is covering everything. The sea is wild but I have been lucky. A bit of fencing down and the bird table destroyed. From my house, I can see gaps where trees stood but I am not going for a walk until it has calmed down.

And still we stick our heads in the sand about climate change and our responsibility to do what we can to minimise the worst of it. How bad does it have to get before we all take to the streets and demand more robust action?

CaveMum · 02/11/2023 09:51

The wave data from CEFAS is gobsmacking. The monitoring buoy at the Sicily Isles recorded an almost 12m wave at 4.30am this morning😱

But we need the destruction of all public and nationalised services, eg transport and energy, because they’re evil communists and prevent rich individuals and companies from squeezing working people for everything they’ve got … (will stop derailing)

For anyone with a door that has been subject to horizontal rain (particularly by the coast) would recommend a spray of WD40 in the lock over the next few days.

It's a small thing but when your key breaks in it a right pain.

Ours really seized up and after Babet and didn't think I'd be able to get key out

ACGTHelixA · 02/11/2023 10:17

ive resummerised the original thread details

Based on the information provided, it seems that there is a forecast for potentially severe weather with a deep low-pressure system over Wednesday and Thursday. Some key points to note are:

  1. Low Pressure System: There is a consistent prediction of a deep low-pressure system.
  2. Wind Gusts: The models suggest the possibility of severe gusts, with southern coastal winds reaching up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds around 60mph. These are strong winds that could lead to potential hazards and disruptions.
  3. Rainfall: Storms are expected,
  4. Track Uncertainty: The details about the track of the low-pressure system are not yet nailed down. A slight deviation in the track could significantly impact the weather outcomes, either taking the system further north or keeping it in France.
  5. Timing: The exact timing of when and where the low-pressure system develops will be crucial in determining the overall outcome.

In summary, the forecast indicates the potential for severe weather with strong winds, rain, and uncertainty about the exact track of the low-pressure system. It's advisable to stay updated on weather reports as more details become available, as changes in the track or intensity of the system could significantly alter the expected outcomes.

That baby monitor video just made me gasp @FoleyHuck . Sending all my good luck vibes to you and other CI MNs this morning.

Good luck also to @CatOnAHotShedRoof from the other side of the causeway - hope you're not cut off for too long. I thought we'd escaped the worst but as I type bucketloads of rain have just started falling. Winds seem OK though.

The easiest way to solve it is to not have more children. A population of a billion can do pretty much what it wants. 8 billion and rising not so much.
. Travel, cars, decent fresh food and shopping are what make life fun. No one’s going back to living like peasants.
You can’t recycle your way out of over consumption. “Plant based” can mean anything from seasonal organically grown to factory grown processed protein.

Doris86 · 02/11/2023 10:18

Total non event where I am. Light winds and a little rain. Schools have all overreacted and closed for no apparent reason so far.

Will see if it gets any worse later.

Yes our wind contains a lot of salt!

Sparehair · 02/11/2023 10:26

Problem is it can change so quickly. We had 2 main roads closed both ways this morning due to flooding but now they’ve drained as there wasn’t more heavy rain. If there had been it would have been a different story and schools traffic would have created gridlock. I’m breathing a sigh of relief as high tide is now past tense so flooding risk now reducing. Was panicking in case we got cut off and I couldn’t get out to get kids from school- my kids school is open but a lot of the secondaries are online today

Workers must not work from home and must commute for over an hour in rush hour in the middle of a storm (even though the working from home option is there we must have you in person - amber alert be damned). So unnecessary - especially if you can do the same job WFH.

You can take to the streets if you like but I'm not joining you. It's horrible out there, absolutely pissing down and blowing a hoolie.

Same goes for all the plastic Halloween tat. When are people are going to get the message that we can't treat the planet like this?

Yes we got storms before we started messing up the climate, but not (usually) as bad, and not as regularly.

But people don't care. They stick their heads in the sand because they can't bear the thought of having to give up the polluting SUV or their ski holidays or cruises.

Blinkityblonk · 02/11/2023 10:37

It was very quiet here early in the morning and I thought it had bypassed us. It's going over now, very blowy, very rainy, not frightening levels though. I've lost two fences in the last two years so will be glad if that doesn't happen again. Hope everyone in the worst hit areas are ok. I suspect flooding over the next few days will cause more travel chaos and damage homes.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 02/11/2023 10:38

Thankfully I have a sensible employer but if I didn't I'd just say I can do my job from home and there is an amber alert and my safety comes first (and also if I am not out there, that's one less person that could potentially get into difficulties and mean someone else has to risk their neck to get to me).

DarklySparkly · 02/11/2023 10:40

@FoleyHuck you feel things so much more intensely when you’re pregnant. In a few years time you’ll be telling DD/DS about the wildest storm when you were pregnant. We have two weather-related stories from my pregnancy with DS, one a thunderstorm, the other the Beast from the East. Glad your house is largely intact. As for that video - it’s amazing and it’s a testament to ninja mama instincts. Be extra gentle with yourself over the next few days x

3luckystars · 02/11/2023 10:43

In Ireland and no impact here thank God (yet anyway) I find the wind maps very interesting. Where would I see that video?

Coastalcreeksider · 02/11/2023 10:44

Looking out into my garden in Fareham, little bit of brightness, rain has stopped and still just a bit breezy.

Haven't been by the creek a few minutes from me but assume that high tide flooded the little road up to the houses. The big field was heavily flooded at the weekend so assume it probably still is.

Jungfraujoch · 02/11/2023 10:47

15 min walk away - My local beach this morning (not my pic). I’m inside!
