Storm Ciarán

This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

Thunderstorm just arrived here!

They have to provide the bottled water as soon as possible for unplanned outages but within 24 hours (source: Ofwat) so it’s sometimes much sooner but not always especially if it’s a big outage and conditions for transport are difficult.

Oh interesting, the CAB said 12 hours per the below:

https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/water/your-water-supply/interruptions-to-your-water-supply/#:~:text=If%20the%20interruption%20lasts%20more,(tankers%20in%20the%20street).

But we had a massive water outage last week impacting thousands of homes and lasting over 24 hours and they only supplied to some vulnerable customers - no one else. So if it has changed that would explain it.

Interruptions to your water supply

Your rights when your water supply is interrupted for repairs or because of an emergency such as burst main pipe and what you can do when things go wrong.

It’s stopped raining for now, and sounds quieter. Some flooding reported online along seafront in a couple of areas (high tide was 2 hours ago).
I keep an eye on the airport website, as it constantly updates the largest gust over 10 mins and 1 hour. https://www.airport.gg/weather

As a reminder for those worrying about losing power - you might also lose your water supply so worth filling up drinking containers etc in advance. The water companies don’t have to provide supplies for the first 24 hours, but if you are vulnerable worth registering with their priority register. You can also do that with other utility companies.

I somehow wound up on the vulnerable list - thing spinal injury details got through somehow, long after the event.

I took myself off because it seemed wrong but now think I should have stayed on because it might have helped neighbours out.

SeaGlassTreasure · 01/11/2023 22:55

@MissIndecisive2023 I tried to reply to your post, but it didn’t work properly. You’ll see it above. Hope your family stay safe.

FoleyHuck · 01/11/2023 22:57

Stay safe all, especially my fellow channel islanders as we move towards the brunt of it.

We're off to bed now, not sure if it's best to put my noise cancelling headphones on and block it out or stay alert Confused

(Will probably be back in an hour when I can't sleep)

colouringindoors · 01/11/2023 23:01

Hoping everyone in channel isles and amber zones are ok overnight. Thinking of you.

Waveifyouknowme · 01/11/2023 23:02

Central Dorset, South Coast (can see the sea) almighty thunderstorm and lightning, wind picking up.

Where possible shut all windows and internal doors helps to protect the roof from winds.

Several trees down already.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/11/2023 23:03

I'm going to try and sleep too. Thinking of you all down by the coast.
If the thread runs out can someone start a new one please.

Salisbury, not much wind (as of yet) but hammering down with rain outside.

Bit of wisdom with my builders hat on, DO NOT go into the loft with high winds outdoors, the loft is not airtight and opening the hatch in high winds can result in half your tiles going airbourne as a vacuum is formed by wind rushing across the tiles, pulling them down, as you open the hatch the vacuum is lost and air rushes in from below, they lift just enough for a gust to pluck em off!

This is indeed legit. There was a tornado last week in Littlehampton I think, and a few years ago quite a bad one in Birmingham. It’s not quite like Twister though.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 01/11/2023 23:06

@RagzRebooted sound alike you are in same area as my parents. I am hoping all is ok there - half their garden is woodland but luckily the half away from the house. My dad is also pretty good about getting the trees checked.

Magicmonster · 01/11/2023 23:07

I’m in guernsey. It doesn’t sound TOO bad yet but I think it will be a hairy night especially for anyone living on the coast

My loft hatch is still open from summer. Should I close it? Means getting the ladder set up, but I could do it. Windows are all closed.

socks1107 · 01/11/2023 23:09

We've just got home off the Eurostar and the train and wind here in Kent are quite bad!

SequentialAnalyst · 01/11/2023 23:10

The water companies can't magic water bottles to everyone at once. Logistics, innit. Round here they used to bring in a sort of portable tank, to be shared by the households of nearby roads. The advice has always been to fill vessels with fresh water if it looks like the water might be going off. And sometimes there are planned outages because of works by the local water supplier. So it's worth keeping buckets and things clean (I am preaching here - I don't necessarily practise all I preachWink)

I am old, so remember one summer when Durham's water was yucky but safe, because the reservoirs were so lowConfused

Nothing to see at the moment but when it gets light tomorrow, a due west facing camera in Jersey (assuming it's still attached to the building by then).

That Sidmouth Sea has suddenly got very violent looking!

Pixiedust1234 · 01/11/2023 23:11

Oh yikes!! I was just thinking how quiet it was outside and that the weathermen had got it wrong. Apparently not 😯

Good luck to everyone down south!

FauxWhiteOrchid · 01/11/2023 23:12

Stay safe everyone.

JenniferBooth · 01/11/2023 23:13
