This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

I can see two rainbows in the sky all at once!

Black sky, wind definitely whipping up.

sailrunski · 01/11/2023 15:15

The wind is picking up in Southampton now. It's been a beautiful autumn day!

Schools are closed tomorrow.

My bedroom looks down a river, with a fairly decent view out on to the Solent - looking forward to weather watching this evening.

RedDiamond · 01/11/2023 15:16

About 5 miles from the south coast. Now it's all bright and sunny again.

Vintagevixen · 01/11/2023 15:18

@OhYouBadBadKitten do you think this is comparable to storm Eunice 2022 or Storm Ciara in 2020? Or worse?

PuzzledObserver · 01/11/2023 15:20

I was sitting in my car at about 1.15 having just dropped someone off at an appointment. Skies darkened, wind got up, heavens opened. Here we go, thought I.

Ten minutes later - bright sunshine, calm as you like - and still is now. So just a little taster, then.

Apparently it’s going to start peaking up again around 5-6pm and peak wind will be at 9am tomorrow. Mid Devon. Not near the coast!

No, I don't. I think this is being pretty well forecast. I've not seen any suggestions of a sting jet for example, which is thought to be what caused the worst of the damage in 1987.

It will be a dangerous storm for the Channel Islands for sure and parts of the SW and perhaps the far SE. Conditions look like they will also probably be pretty dangerous along parts of the south, especially by the coast.. Amber warnings should be taken seriously.

Elsewhere, in yellow areas, care should be taken. It is possible that it penetrates a little further in land than the forecast might suggest at present.

I'm a bit concerned actually about how difficult it is to clearly communicate risk level. To some this is a dangerous storm. For others, even perhaps in the warning areas, they will not see very high winds. That doesn't mean that the forecast was necessarily inaccurate, but more that people don't understand probability.

I suspect that this won't be the last named storm of the season and if media don't report risks accurately, then next time people may ignore warnings.

Completely agree. When it was uncertain which days everything would arrive I was talking to my friend about it, who's planning a fireworks party. She firmly said, no we're going ahead whatever the weather, people can bring umbrellas. This surprised me given they live in one of the villages that was badly damaged by the Valentine's Day Storm in 2014.

And the media, going for the most clicks they can, will use the most dramatic language they can. I saw one report saying the storm was racing in at 200mph, which made people think they were predicting 200mph wind.

Yet again, they are showing they have no concern about accuracy and responsibility.

aswarmofmidges · 01/11/2023 15:22

During babet the Scottish news interviewed sone people who didn't evacuate when asked - essentially because they didn't understand risk // probability -it didn't happen last time so it will be fine this time was the logic

They were very honest and apologetic that they got it wrong

trakehner · 01/11/2023 15:27

Bang on 3pm (just as school let out) sky went black, the wind picked up and the heavens opened and I thought uh oh here we go... 20 mins later beautiful double rainbow and now it's blue sky and sunshine again! North Wilts area.

@WestwardHo1 I'm looking forward to the 50ft waves that are going to slam our coastline that I keep reading about on twatter 🙄

Henbags · 01/11/2023 15:28

I'm meant to be flying from Southend Airport tomorrow at 1pm and am a terrible flyer as it is, so am now utterly terrified at the prospect of flying in this storm! Do you think the flights will be cancelled? So far, Easyjet have only acknowledged the storm, not that the flights might be cancelled!

SausageAndEggSandwich · 01/11/2023 15:34

In Exmouth, just been out for a run - it's a beautiful afternoon.

Along the prom there are JCBs piling up boulders along the sea wall.

I'm not leaving the house until tomorrow afternoon earliest now. Stay safe everyone.

Jbrown76 · 01/11/2023 15:44

What websites/apps are people using that shows low pressure a few days in advance and the trajectory it might follow?

Swimbikerunmummy · 01/11/2023 15:45

@FoleyHuck are you in Jersey? Waving from across the water in Guernsey. Feeling pretty anxious. We’ve got a renovation project underway here so our house is boarded up on one side, hope it holds!

FuzzyPuffling · 01/11/2023 15:48

Grey and slightly breezy in Plymouth, but there's a kind of ominous feel to it all.
Sending all good thoughts to those in the CI.

Strong winds forecast for Southend tomorrow PM but it's another airport where the runway alignment pretty almost matches the predicted wind direction so I'd say there's a fair chance of you flying.

If it helps I could maybe point out that a nice stiff headwind actually helps the aircraft get airborne, but you can expect things to be a bit bumpy initially

A lot of how tomorrows flying works out is going to depend on how/if the weather today gets aircraft out of position due to diversions or long delays.

Itsbecauseiamamum · 01/11/2023 15:56

Just come back from Birling Gap in East Sussex . Waves at least 5 metres!

WestwardHo1 · 01/11/2023 15:58

15 foot breaking waves in East Sussex? They're not that big here yet 😳

DarklySparkly · 01/11/2023 15:58

Bands of rain and sunshine here in mid-Wales too. When the rain comes the sky is that purple-dun that precedes a storm. The crows are cawing in our tree at the moment, which is unusual at this time of day, they’re usually flying. It’s like they’re aware something’s coming. We also had seagulls here yesterday, which is the first time I’ve seen them this far inland since Storm Dennis.

butterpuffed · 01/11/2023 16:02

I'm on the South East coast [Kent] half a mile from the sea . Heavy rain this morning , then sunny , now clouds getting dark . Large bottles of water in the fridge , kettle full , torch , candles ,keeping laptop and mobile on charge at the moment .

WestwardHo1 · 01/11/2023 16:04

I just looked in the man draw for the torch. I can only find a bike pump, some out of date guarantees and takeaway menus, some puzzling keys and some euros. Not even paper euros ☹️

Yes husband was with me and he is a very experienced sailor and not prone to exaggeration ever . It was his estimate! I personally wouldn’t have had a clue TBH but they are big!

All these things will be enormously useful...I just don't know how yet!

Cornwallsfaveflappyj · 01/11/2023 16:17

It's dark, windy and hail here..but only in short sudden gusts/ spurts.

so weird

FuzzyPuffling · 01/11/2023 16:17

The seagulls here (normally very vocal on all the chimneys) have all vanished. I hope they have taken shelter.
