Storm Ciarán

This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

What’s everyone doing about walking to school tomorrow? I’m in an Amber area for wind tomorrow (south coast). It’s a short walk but is it going to be safe? I’m not working tomorrow so could easily keep dc off, and strong wind makes me very nervous!

I was wondering this too. 20 min walk and no car. Sure it'll be fine but the thought has crossed my mind.

Thanks Thundering and Not. Where do I find this detailed aviation report?
Might spend the day going into (the many) churches and praying....

If you are looking for a specific airport forecast you need to try and find something known as it’s TAF (Terminal Approach Forecast) which gets issued/updated on a regular basis.

You can either try simply googling TAF_airport name, or go via one of the specialist sites such as “allmetsat” or “metar-taf ” (FWIW a metar is the actual reported weather).

Just be aware the raw TAF as issued is written in a coded shorthand which makes speed reading easy for those who speak the language, fortunately for those that don’t the likes of allmet….or metar-taf usually provide a plain language translation.

If you want more broad area forecasts or high level stuff (e.g. turbulence in the cruise) some is available via the Met Office and other sources, though some of it is subscription.

HTH.

Urgh, still in the amber zone and have to drive over 'the' hill to get DS to school in the morning. That means leaving the shelter of our little valley and being pretty exposed on the way down to the city. Not looking forward to that at all! I'll be glad when it's the weekend again :)

ParsnipPie · 01/11/2023 10:46

It’s already pretty wild here. (North Devon coast close to border with Cornwall) We are in the Amber wind warning area, as well as the yellow rain area. Have secured garden bits and reinforced the wobbly bit of chicken run. I’ll shift the car shortly- it’s under a big beech tree that still has a lot of leaves on. Hunkering down and crocheting, not taking any silly risks. Family is lifeboat crew so I’m hoping they won’t be needed.

Bubbles254 · 01/11/2023 10:47

We seem to have been added to the Amber warning. In the SE it is now going further north.

DavidChecker · 01/11/2023 10:47

I am in Midlands, friend in Swansea has yellow warning for today expecting to change to Amber later, ?evening?
Tonight low off Lands End forecast 950mb. Tomorrow day it will move to Norfolk 970mb then off to North sea but may swing north.
Could be windy. Many Race Meetings likely to be called off.

They’re so brave. I’m a (now armchair) sailor, always grateful the lifeboat crews are there ❤️

WestwardHo1 · 01/11/2023 11:07

Hopefully no one is daft enough to be out there. There's been plenty of warning.

Might get a bit of Phenomenal sea state

I'm along from you & currently sitting in sunshine with 3 wind-sensitive collies crammed onto the sofa with me fast asleep, that's how calm it is. Been a few bursts of rain & random gusts but atm it's a delightful autumnal day

We have had some intervals of blue sky, but it has that ominous feel.

I’m doing my harsh weather chore checklist,
batteries for torches charged, keeping flasks topped up with kettle water, got my simple landline phone out- needs no electricity supply, getting a stew going now so we have something for next couple of days if needed, keeping iPads& phones charged, and power banks, cat litter tray at the ready in case it is required by the cat that hates to go out in bad weather.
Not sure if I’ve forgotten anything.

It might sound over the top, but it helps us feel secure and if it’s not needed, it’s no bother.

Caerulea · 01/11/2023 11:28

@ParsnipPie haha OK now I'm feeling slightly underprepared cos my morning has consisted of sorting washing, swearing at the tumble dryer & tidying up my mistletoe cactus with some tweezers 😂

Tbf, battery banks are charged & we've got some rechargeable lights arriving today cos no matter how many times I buy candles I can never find them again. I'd be amazed if we don't have power cuts at some point.

CrystalSea · 01/11/2023 11:28

Thank you for this thread. It’s very helpful. We are south coast so will go out later and tie things down before the wind starts. Annoyingly it’s rubbish day tomorrow and we live on the top of a hill which means we can’t put the food waste bin out as it will just blow away.

ParsnipPie · 01/11/2023 11:34

I’m probably over preparing - so don’t worry!

I’ve had plenty of winter storms where we have lost power/ phone line. Even 8 days without mains water during the great freeze of ‘Beast from the East’ so I like to be ready 😀 The garage has my ‘apocalypse stash’ including bottled water after that year.
I’m off to rescue neighbours’ recycling boxes which are bouncing down the lane.

Itsbecauseiamamum · 01/11/2023 11:37

We are in an Amber zone as is my daughter. Have been a stressy Mum and strongly advised her not to drive to Eastbourne tomorrow for a work study day !

No I just picked it when I flounced off MN in a huff and slunk back in two days months later. I don't know why I chose it - fond memories? I'm quite a lot further west as a matter of fact

I used to post a bit in weather under my previous names

WestwardHo1 · 01/11/2023 11:45

It's been very squally here this morning (blue sky at the moment). Have had 53mph at Land's End

PuzzledObserver · 01/11/2023 11:51

I’m in Mid Devon, north west of Exeter. It was pretty still this morning, but it’s started getting a bit breezy. The side gate just slammed and reminded me that the bolt doesn’t go home and the latch is useless in wind. So I’ve just been out and moved the big heavy storage chest behind it to keep it closed, and I’ve brought the food bin, watering can and insect home indoors for good measure.

I’m a volunteer driver for community transport - just off to do the first of 4 drives this afternoon….

We've just done all this too. I'm feeling very apprehensive.

We moved from North Cornwall to Plymouth last year and hoped we wouldn't be quite so badly hit by storms, but the shipping forecast has Plymouth sea area at hurricane level 12!

God bless all lifeboat crews and keep them.safe.

Sounds very sensible to me!

The first winter in our current house was when the beast from the east hit. 10 days before the snow blower got to us to reduce the 10 foot snow drifts on the roads to a size the snow ploughs could deal with! Nearly 2 days without power. We learnt… and now have a whole cupboard filled with the Snow Just in case supplies! And always try to have phones charged, power packs charged, etc - including some fuel for the fire in the house (some neighbours half a mile away had to burn furniture, as they couldn’t get out of their house to their outbuilding where their logs and coal for their fire was kept).

An aside about flying: I used to be nervous myself, but once I had been across the North Sea and back by sea ferry a few times, I realised that planes are like boats that sail on an invisible sea made of air.

After that, my brain was happy to accept that the plane I was in was just sailing across little waves if the air was calm, or, if there was a very little turbulance, the air was choppy. All perfectly normal, both for the ferry crew, and the aircrewSmile
