Storm Antoni warning

So the Met Office have named tomorrows storm as Storm Antoni. It's our first named storm of the 22/23 season. The season ends at the end of August. So I think that makes it the latest UK named storm since we started naming them in the UK

Met Office warnings.

The criteria for the Met Office to name storms is an impact based criteria. The threshold of which is determined as to whether the storm has the potential to require amber or red warnings.

As you can see in the impact matrix this is storm has an intermediate chance of causing moderately high impacts. Should likelihood of impacts increase, perhaps across a smaller region, then an amber warning would be issued.

Good luck Onion! Can you make sure that you keep warm dry stuff in your car, if you have it, so that if it all goes a bit pear shaped you don't end up with wet stuff?

My main concerns are for Devon and Cornwall, very very wind in the morning with very heavy rain and poor visibility. Even though the bulk of the rain will push out of the way fairly rapidly, there could potentially be some strong winds behind the rain in the afternoon, gusting up to 60mph or so. This could be particularly problematic to drivers of caravans and other high sided vehicles.

Note that the wind will change direction through the event. Campers beware! Wind will shift from the SW in the morning to NW in the afternoon.

Winds not looking too bad in the east away from the south coast, but beware south East Anglia coastal communities for some strong gusty winds.

Where rain clears out and skies clear, some hefty downpours and thunderstorms could pop up.

Some might be wondering why we have a named storm with winds that are not exceptional compared to an autumn or winter storm. When the Met Office issue warnings, they are based on the impact that the weather will have, rather than absolute measures of wind speed. Factors that will have lead to this decision will probably have included:

1. Trees are in full leaf.
2. Time of day - It's when people will be out and about.
3. Its the summer holidays and the storm will be most impacting an area where many people are camping or enjoying themselves by the sea. Summer fetes, sporting events etc will be taking place.

By having this system of warnings, it allows organisers and people to make responsible decisions. By naming wind storms it gives a clear direction that the storm is potentially dangerous.

oh and as for my thoughts on where will be worst and what to look for, remember I'm just an enthusiastic amateur. Always refer to the Met Office and local professional meteorologists for official guidance!

I left out the potential impact on Ireland and Northern Ireland where very heavy rain is going to be an issue. NI had its wettest July on record and tomorrows very heavy rain will provide an unwelcome additional flooding risk.

We were seasoned campers in Blackpool during the Big storm of 1987 - the new tent collapsed in on itself during the night.

The insurance company refused to pay out as it was an ‘act of god’.

My work floods during heavy rain so it will be interesting however I’m still excited, love a good storm. Unfortunately I think I’m too far north to really enjoy the best of it and will be underground most of the day. Slightly worried for my tomato plants in the garden though

We were going to an outdoor music event tomorrow, right on the edge of (possibly just outside) the SE edge of the yellow area on the map from Met Office. SIL wanted to book tickets a week ago, I said maybe wait and see given the weather! Glad I did. They've now discounted the on the gate price and plan to go ahead, but I'm thinking it's not a great idea!

Yes, I'm sure. It is the first one named by the UK and Irish Met offices There have been storms named by other European countries that have crossed us.

I can be certain of this as it is called Antoni. Antoni is the first name listed for the 2022/23 season. Storm seasons as per the Met Office run from the beginning of September to the end of the following August.
