Confused

So the Met Office have named tomorrows storm as Storm Antoni. It's our first named storm of the 22/23 season. The season ends at the end of August. So I think that makes it the latest UK named storm since we started naming them in the UK

We're currently driving from Dublin to the west coast in Ireland. I'm expecting to see the river Shannon very high when we go through Limerick after all the recent rain (record rainfall for July was this year, as well as record monthly rainfall in March and last October).

We are seeing the first front of the rain in the past 15 minutes as we get to the edges of Limerick county. And it's quite dusky from low clouds. I'm expecting a wet and relatively windy night - we were just talking in the car before I opened this thread about the potential for damage with trees in full leaf and very sodden ground meaning it's much easier for trees to come down.

BiddyPop · 04/08/2023 19:02

And DH is another fan of yours OYBBK (and Gloria) - he tells me to "get onto that Mum's thing and see what the kitten thinks about..." if there is potentially tricky weather looming.

BiddyPop · 04/08/2023 19:13

Has gone from dull but dry to very heavy rain with reduced visibility very quickly, but there is almost no movement in the trees as we go along so still very calm.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/08/2023 19:25

A slightly surreal contrast here Biddy. It's a fine summers evening. Warmish and bright skies.

You made a good point about the ground being sodden, making it more likely for trees to come down.

My ds is working in a tent at a festival this weekend - it might get interesting….

Doesn't bode well for the sea shanty festival I'm attending. It will be very squally.

The Five Islands Gig rowing races (Poole) have all been rescheduled to Sunday because of this storm

SKY is describing the storm as "atrocious"

We’re trading at Wickham festival, on Wednesday we had my car, a van and caravan.
My car would have gone on pitch for unloading then out to the carpark for nipping out
But that plan changed due to mud

The caravan was towed in by a site vehicle
The van & my car almost made it to pitch - losing traction on the last turn in
(My car has been slotted into the space behind pitches - behind our neighbours
We’ll be staying put for the duration and expecting to be pulled out

We’re in the expected border of tomorrows storm, so will see what happens

Yikes. And I thought my wet and windy week camping in Cornwall was rough! So glad to be home!

Barbadossunset · 04/08/2023 21:31

Good luck tommika!
The last 4 weekends have been a wash out - surely unusual for this time of year? It was round about this time last year that dh and I had to sleep on a mattress in the garden as the house was hot as hell.

OnionBhajis · 04/08/2023 21:58

So I see its been raised to an amber wind warning where we are...

MrsGasManridesagain · 04/08/2023 22:41

We're going to a jousting event in Sussex tomorrow. I can't believe they've not cancelled, it'll be miserable for humans and horses.

Upsizer · 04/08/2023 22:46

Amber warning! Massive camping event near me - wonder if insurance will insist on cancellation?

OnionBhajis · 04/08/2023 22:49

So calm evening and we're all in our tent. We've not left anything loose outside . Lots of other campers and low hedging....

We're not far from loo block if desperate for shelter/or the car.

I think the rain starts at3am so will see how it goes. ..

Doyathinkhesaurus · 04/08/2023 23:10

Onion pack everything up tonight in bags and have it ready to stick in the car just in case. I remember one awful night on the Isle of Wight with 60mph winds which smashed tents at 3am. We were holding up one woman's tent and pulling children and dogs out of it in rain and gales. Her stuff was not packed. It went everywhere. We got everyone into the laundry in the end. Terrifying.

OnionBhajis · 04/08/2023 23:12

Oh gosh I so hope we don't have to do that.

Our stuff is in bags. So hopefully we could jusy stuff into car (parked next to tent). Still calm just light drizzle.

AmbleInAnnBoleyn · 04/08/2023 23:17

Sending good vibes to all the campers overnight.

NottsNora · 04/08/2023 23:17

Good luck to those in tents tonight. Stay safe.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/08/2023 23:45

Oh dear. It's not unexpected really. Gusts to 70mph potentially in exposed locations. Peak sometime around midday into mid afternoon or so.

@OhYouBadBadKitten any thoughts on Dover ferry crossings Sunday morning? It’s outside the warning area for today, but then I don’t know if the Channel is covered by warnings normally… are we in for a rough ride?

I'm local and was there on Thursday.

It's was certainly muddy!!! Luckily parked in village square and walked up!

mumonthehill · 05/08/2023 07:36

We are in the Amber bit in Wales, so far not to bad beyond the usual rain and grey but looks like the winds will increase later. All out door events have been cancelled here.

OnionBhajis · 05/08/2023 08:12

So it was very wet in Devon camping land last night. But the eet was okay. Winds have picked up now though!
