After the dramatic weather for some over the last few days, mostly covered in the Thunderstorm warning threads, I think it's time to switch to a new thread. After all, we are two weeks into meteorological summer.

Page 24 | Spring Weather watch | Mumsnet

Optimistically we turn our eyes towards Spring weather in the hope that we are in the last throes of winter. But March is a capricious month. ... It...

Sad

Such a shame.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/08/2023 21:56

At least it's not as bad as July 2007.

2007 was poor! I remember going ahead with my daughters birthday party outside despite the rain and cold!!

justasking111 · 07/08/2023 00:30

1998 I remember because the builders started the extension in March and finished mid August. I didn't have a kitchen so had to wash up in the bathroom sink. We had a kettle and microwave. I had hoped to BBQ but it rained day in day out. I was on the edge of a breakdown at the end of it. It was so cold and damp my clothes went mouldy, we had a log burner for heating and an erratic electric shower.

Strangely the summer before was incredibly hot I remember viewing the house early August we were absolutely melting then walked into a cool house which haha I thought a bonus at the time because we'd had three months of relentless heat.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/08/2023 08:32

I had a look at some of the Tonga eruption articles and a paper justasking. It is interesting as you say. It looks like understanding of the impact is still being looked at and we will likely see a few papers come out with slightly different conclusions. One paper estimated the impact as it will have contributed around 0.035c of warming.

I expect that the global extreme temperature that we saw last month will be a combination of factors. Mostly due to the inexorable pressure that man made climate change is creating, but being tipped over the edge by a number of smaller factors. El Niño isn't thought to be really creating an effect yet as it is just getting going, but it will influence things over coming months and next year.

Perhaps we should rename this the Autumn watch thread Sad

Enjoy the rest of summer on Thursday.

Its not really the end of summer, but the outlook remains unsettled, wet and thunderstorms at times, with spells of strong wind likely in the west. Best of the weather looks to be in the SE, so everyone to Margate for their hols!

Sad we have hardly had any summer really, have we.

countrygirl99 · 08/08/2023 09:50

Round here harvest is usually done and dusted by mid August but this year it's hardly started. The winter weather is looking really grey now.

pinkchampagne1 · 08/08/2023 11:05

I live on the south coast and it has returned to grey and dreary weather after one day of a little sunshine yesterday. It doesn’t feel like summer. 😞

countrygirl99 · 08/08/2023 11:09

Winter wheat not winter weather. That's always grey!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/08/2023 13:30

Harvest is going to be really difficult. I walked through a field with beautiful golden barley this weekend. How on earth they will harvest it with these conditions is anyone's guess.

It was lovely and sunny this morning and Dublin Bay was almost glassy calm compared to the swell the past few days. I was glad I jumped in for a swim then before the tide fell too far as, despite Alexa telling it wouldn't rain until Thursday, my yoga have got a good rinse on the line drying already!!!

But it is a nice respite from the recent winds, even if that means less renewable energy (forecast this morning mentioned a calm week wind wise...).

BiddyPop · 08/08/2023 14:00

Yoga = togs

They may have to plough it back in its worrying. We took a drive out for lunch through the Conwy valley west of Conwy. Over the sychnant pass. I've never seen ithe gorse and bracken so green in August it's normally brown by now.

After a sunny morning it's heavily overcast again with not a breath of wind.

Jamtartforme · 08/08/2023 16:56

I was at the park earlier, lots of people in puffer jackets, in fucking August! Not just because of the rain but because it’s windy and chilly!

Smoky1107 · 08/08/2023 18:04

London has been cold all day! I'm heading home from work to get my joggers and slippers on

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/08/2023 22:03

To add to the gloomy feel I've put my tomatoes on blight watch. The conditions are perfect for it now. I've not have to think about it for a few years.

House training puppy last night wondered down near the greenhouse with the trusty torch. There were three huge slugs and a couple of snails near the door. Bally things

Struggling to get tomatoes to ripen if we get blight OH will go mad 🙈

justasking111 · 08/08/2023 23:32

OH went out fishing in the boat again today absolutely zilch again. Had a chat with local fishermen, there's absolutely nothing being caught, Pollock, mackerel, etc. I'm wondering if the water is too warm for them so they're in much deeper water. It's that or something worse. We've issued swimming bans to more beaches this week NRW won't say why.

megletthesecond · 09/08/2023 07:41

I think we have 3 laundry days in Hampshire now. My poor washing machine won't know what hit it.

I resorted to buying a heated airer a couple of weeks ago.

BiddyPop · 09/08/2023 08:48

Millpond calm again in Dublin Bay, and overcast (but there's a good stripe of blue sky in the eastern sky). Steam from incinerator is going straight up a good way before veering slightly SSE by the look I
If it (so small NNW breeze up high).

GloriaSmud · 09/08/2023 11:59

Summer has arrived, at least for a few days!

Washing machine is on overdrive - been washing all duvets and pillows and I'm doing the carpets/rugs on Friday.

I decided to pick all my tomatoes from the allotment and ripen them at home in the hope that they don't get blight. It's a shame to do it this way but I'd rather have some red ones than have another episode of blight like I had 2 years ago when I lost most of them.

And lo and behold, the heat has arrived. Freezing yesterday, and today is too hot and very very still 😯
