Spring Weather watch

Optimistically we turn our eyes towards Spring weather in the hope that we are in the last throes of winter. But March is a capricious month. ...

It looks like we've a fairly unsettled couple of weeks coming up overall, with plenty of showers and rain. I'm afraid wintry showers are still likely over northern hills for a time yet.

Water storage will be grateful for the rain and at least there's a chance of spectacular cumulus cloudscapes on showery days (as opposed to these grey gloomy days which frankly can sod off)

@EmmaEmerald I'm in the NW and it was wall to wall sunshine yesterday, about 16 but that was because it was really windy which cooled it down, definitely would have got burnt if you had no cream on though.

Maybe it's me or a generational thing but 16 isn't suncream weather unless you're working outdoors.

LittleFreakJezebel · 16/05/2023 08:32

@EmmaEmerald as I said the sun was strong, it was just windy so you definitely needed cream. Sun cream usage shouldn't be based on temperature alone!

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/05/2023 08:43

It’s not the temp, it’s to do with the angle of the Sun’s rays. The UV rating in May is roughly the same as it is in July, it’s just cooler and your skin has less tolerance.

It says a lot about how shit the weather has been since March that I think this week is the first time I’ve got the proper sun cream out not just relied on the spf in my face cream.

Clear blue skies here this morning but cold. Heating has turned itself on. Don’t think it’s going to last though.

SunnyEgg · 16/05/2023 09:14

We’re doing hats at school / sun cream as it is the angle of sun and UV strength as in pp not temp

We were camping with my cub scouts for the weekend and lashing sun cream on them. 1 cub still got some redness to his face and my ears are quite tingly (and I specifically included them in my own lashing).

It was a slightly surreal weekend for weather - lovely day but very heavy dew came up Fri night and it was a cold night. Sat was lovely and the most rolled away from us relatively early but hung around at sea level (20 minutes drive definitely not as crow flies away). And then a sprinkling of rain on Sunday morning but enough sun and breeze that when we came back at 6, the tents were dry again (easier for leaders to go back later than hanging 7 tents and a marquee in the den and our houses to dry!).

BiddyPop · 16/05/2023 09:30

We start boating season on Saturday - which we had hoped would include some sailing but I think it will be too calm for that. But looks like otherwise perfect weather for mucking about in rowboats! 😁 Even if cloudy, as forecast, will need sun cream as the reflection of sun on water makes a big difference.

And my plants have suddenly started to shoot up so definitely properly warming up. I may even sow some beans at the weekend!

My grandson had this weekend away with the cubs he's caught the sun. BUT it was cold at night he said.

Thank you for giving up your weekend for these youngsters 🥇🥇🥇

SE here and I think it was about 20 yesterday lunchtime. Doesn’t matter what the temp is, if it’s strong sunshine you need suncream! I have factor 50 on my face most days May-sept.

stillherenow · 16/05/2023 13:53

Although obviously I’d forgotten about this habit yesterday sending dd off for her roasting

EmmaEmerald · 19/05/2023 16:15

Anyone else finding it's still pretty crap? Yesterday and the day before were okay but cold in the evening. Doesn't look like there's any change coming. So pissed off.

WhatCanWeDoNext · 19/05/2023 16:30

We’re apparently expecting 21 degrees on Monday. It is slightly warmer today but that’s probably the cloud cover. My seedlings do seem to have had a spurt though 🤞

LittleFreakJezebel · 19/05/2023 16:57

Still got a cool breeze lowering temps here (coast so used to a breeze but it's normally warm by this time of year!) but when you get in a sheltered spot, which I've taken great care to make my garden into, it's lovely. 20 and sunny forecasted for the next 3 days.

Hedjwitch · 19/05/2023 17:10

First proper warm day of the year here in central Scotland. Gorgeous.

RampantIvy · 22/05/2023 08:05

@OhYouBadBadKitten which is the best weather app to use? I find that there is so much variation between the BBC forcast and the app I currently have on my phone (I can't tell what it is. It just says Weather).

Notonthestairs · 22/05/2023 08:22

Thanks for that Gloria. Fine & dry works for me.

PickupperPenguin · 22/05/2023 08:29

I’m avidly checking weather forecasts now. We’re getting married in the SW on 10th June, so keeping everything crossed that this lovely weather sticks around! Thank you for all the updates, I love this thread (and Meteociel!)

TrombonesAreNotBones · 22/05/2023 08:44

Penguin fingers crossed for your wedding day, have a super time and congratulations!

SunnyEgg · 22/05/2023 09:04

Looks glorious next week. Hoping for good weather for some garden stuff planned

I'd use the met office app, but cautiously. When we are in a showery situation, it's impossible for apps to predict exactly where and when showers will pop up. The meteograms (the little weather pictures) can be very deceiving in those situations. Always check out the % chance of rain and even then, take with a pinch of salt.

It does look like we have nice settled weather to come. A bit of a caveat for those in the east. The weather looks to be dominated by high pressure out over the atlantic. This can at times allow cloud to push in from the north sea, ruining perfectly nice days.

If you have an iPhone and you’re using the app that says weather, do not trust that at all. It is fairly good for telling you what the weather is not going to be like though. 😂

Summer has arrived. Love the first day of the year that you leave work early and it is hot and sunny at the bus stop. If feels properly summery today.

RampantIvy · 22/05/2023 12:16

It was sunny but cool first thing today. My phone is a Samsung.

RampantIvy · 22/05/2023 12:16

And thank you @OhYouBadBadKitten

PickupperPenguin · 22/05/2023 12:47

Thank you, @TrombonesAreNotBones! 😊

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/05/2023 12:57

This will do nicely for the rest of the week although I doubt the garden will appreciate it.
