Optimistically we turn our eyes towards Spring weather in the hope that we are in the last throes of winter. But March is a capricious month. ...

It looks like we've a fairly unsettled couple of weeks coming up overall, with plenty of showers and rain. I'm afraid wintry showers are still likely over northern hills for a time yet.

Water storage will be grateful for the rain and at least there's a chance of spectacular cumulus cloudscapes on showery days (as opposed to these grey gloomy days which frankly can sod off)

Oh no @TheFormidableMrsC that’s gutting. Hope you are ok and your house hasn’t been flooded.

RampantIvy · 09/05/2023 22:31

Thank you @Pixiedust1234. I had a quick google after I posted. It wasn't mentioned on the 10 o'clock news headlines. I hope it hasn't casued too many problems.

Pixiedust1234 · 09/05/2023 22:38

Im surprised it wasn't on the ten o'clock news considering how widespread and horrific the BBC News has reported it. Even some trains were cancelled.

I only came across the news report by accident tbf otherwise I wouldn't have realise how bad it was either.

TrombonesAreNotBones · 09/05/2023 22:54

Jeepers at the flooding! So sorry for those affected.

RampantIvy · 09/05/2023 23:01

It was on the news, but not a headline. The slot was very short. It looked pretty scary.

justasking111 · 09/05/2023 23:16

Europe is being pummeled today. France and Switzerland moving towards Belgium, Italy.

A major incident has been declared in Somerset due to the flash flooding. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-somerset-65542510

Some potential for more thunderstorms and showers over the next couple of days, but I think these will be less organised and less intense. They should generally be on the eastern and southern side of England.

Bruton floods

Flash flooding: Major incident declared after heavy rain in south

Other parts of England have also seen torrential rain, causing damage to homes and businesses.

More thunderstorms tomorrow. My best guess this time is central eastern areas.

We're forecast them the dog won't be happy 🙈

JuneOsborne · 11/05/2023 06:44

I'm so over the grey skies and the rain. No chance to line dry anything or get in the garden proper.

And I'm cold. So sick of being so cold. It's the middle of May!

RampantIvy · 11/05/2023 06:47

Apparently it has been the coldest spring for 50 years.

I'll tell mum this, she's convinced it's no different than usual.

the temps for tomorrow and next week are shite. It's May ffs.

Argh. Not again. Nothing is drying!
It's grey, humid and permanently threatening to chuck it down.

(Note to self - I'll long for this weather when we are baking in July and I have to do 5.30am dog walks)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/05/2023 10:31

Where did you get that information from Rampant?

Fascinatingly, the Central England Temperature doesn't show this. It shows us running warmer than the long term average.

I think that this is because it is one of the dullest springs for a long time. That makes it feels cold by day, but stops the temperatures from being as cold at night. So we end up with little diurnal temperature change. It is dull in part because much of the surrounding seas are warmer than usual.

You can tell her from me it is 😀I live surrounded by mature treees in people's gardens and normally they're coming into leaf mid March. Some of them only started at the beginning of May this year. And if she REALLY needs convincing, I'm still having a hot water bottle in bed every night. Like you say, it's May, ffs.

RampantIvy · 11/05/2023 10:49

@OhYouBadBadKitten it was an article in The Independent. I'll link it later. It certainly has been much cooler where I live in South Yorkshire. Loads of trees are later with their leaves and blossoms. We had 8 inches of snow in mid March.

RampantIvy · 11/05/2023 10:50

And we have had just two days this year so far where we reached over 19 degrees.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/05/2023 13:35

Perception of weather is a fascinating topic. You can read the statistics for each month from the met office.
Here is Spring so far, which doesn't focus on the central england temperature but rather the UK as a whole.
https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/binaries/content/assets/metofficegovuk/pdf/weather/learn-about/uk-past-events/summaries/uk_monthly_climate_summary_spring2m_2023.pdf

You can see how it is just 0.1c colder than the monthly mean temperature. This differs from the CET statistics because parts of Scotland bought the overall mean temperature down.

Reading it, I hadn't appreciated that April was average for sunshine over the UK as a whole. Scrolling down to the map, it shows that Scotland balanced out the extreme dullness elsewhere.

You can play with other stats here.
https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/climate/maps-and-data/summaries/index

Spring growth does appear to be behind this year, but that will be a combination of factors.
