Not quite January yet, but the weather warnings continue. Generally a mild outlook to come, though of course parts of Scotland will see more wintry weather on and off.

@OhYouBadBadKitten

Thank you. I'll keep batting off all messages re '2023 Beast from the East' being worse than previous ones & my car can keep her everyday tyres on!!

my credit card thanks you! X

@OhYouBadBadKitten what are thoughts on todays temperature being about 13° in the south? Its still only Feb! It's quite worrying

If it was a one off, I'd shrug and say 'that's statistics for you', but it comes on top of the background of a record breaking year last year and our CET is once again high. I'm not sure how much the rest of the month will drag the temperature back down.

Just checking in here about the predicted cold spell

Lovely day in London today, will be horrible to get another Icy Beast.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/02/2023 22:09

Tbh I'm not sure how it will feel. Next week actually doesn't look that bad now, but we might go colder into early March.

15.7c here today at lunch time. However, that's not unique for us. We've got a weird weather system in the shadow of the mountains which is why we grow Palm trees from Llandudno to Prestatyn.

Ljc1985 · 20/02/2023 06:52

Also came straight here after seeing the papers headlines for a big beasty cold snap!

This thread never fails to make me feel better.

You say that... GFS has thrown up a pretty snowy chart for around 5th-7th March. The operational run lies in the middle of the pack of ensembles in terms of temperature with a wide spread of temperatures showing.

I can see that some parts the media have gone a bit mad over this. It is, as ever, far too early to get excited or dismayed.

Anything could happen in two weeks.......

TokyoSushi · 20/02/2023 13:27

I'm just going to go to Level 1 excitement @OhYouBadBadKitten - keep us posted! 😃

ListenLinda · 20/02/2023 13:59

I'm sat at my desk and there is a little icon at the bottom of my screen that displays the temperature, and all it has shown me for the last 2 days is 'temps drop'.

Gah, I was hoping Spring was on it's way! My poor North facing garden needs the patio jet washing and there is no point in doing that if it's going to be cold and damp for the foreseeable!

justasking111 · 20/02/2023 14:06

Well today every door and window open, hoovered and mopped through. Skirting boards cleaned too. It's so warm. I'm feeling as optimistic as my daffodils.

Im in the SE and have had the backdoor open all day with kids in and out of the garden. Its jumper weather but no coat needed its 12 degrees at the moment. Which feels about normal for this time of year

Is it? I was watching the weather forecaster last night and he was saying it was above average for this time of year and that temperatures dropping will bring them down to average. I really fear any above-average temperatures. I don’t long for a warm spring knowing how quickly it turns hot and endlessly hot...Sad.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 20/02/2023 18:00

My daughters were both born in Feb and i remember it being 14 degrees the day she was born 6yrs ago. Its one of those odd things i remember because i looked at the car thermometer when we got to the hospital, also all my fb memories this week have been of outside activities weve done and in all photos we are wearing Jumpers but no coats.

My youngest was born in the middle of the beast from the east snow storm and i remember the drive to the hospital where we couldnt see anything but white in front of us.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/02/2023 22:01

12 degrees is way off normal for this time of year. The mean (that is day and night combined) temperature for central England is around 4c.

Jeez that's SO not normal, it's February! Feels so very worrying.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/02/2023 08:55

As an occasional one off, an anomalously high temperature is nothing to be concerned about, unless of course it is a record breaking high, well beyond the natural expectation, as we saw last summer. Its not unusual for us to get out of season temperatures sometimes.

What is far more concerning is that these higher temperatures form part of a broader pattern that demonstrate that climate change is having a real impact. Month after month is seeing a higher than usual average temperature. This isn't good.

@OhYouBadBadKitten the fact we've had practically no rain for weeks and weeks is just as much a worry. My garden is normally a bit "boggy" at one end now - today it's bullet hard.

Look at how many horse race meetings are being cancelled due to firm ground. That's not happened before. (DH follows racing, and has for 40+ yrs)

It's not good.

DuchessDandelion · 21/02/2023 14:20

@OhYouBadBadKitten it's a real concern, I'm so conscious of it.

@crosspusscrossstitcher you're right I don't think we are getting as much rain as we should. We had a couple of weeks of downpours and it seemed really shocking hearing the rain come down so hard - we've forgotten how much we used to get. If I remember rightly, we've had several years now where we've not had as much seasonal rainfall as we should.

@OhYouBadBadKitten have you seen the thread about posters worrying about the heat this coming summer? The number of posters scoffing about it!

crosspusscrossstitcher · 21/02/2023 15:14

@DuchessDandelion It's my birthday in a couple of weeks -
DH said "You can have anything you want"... so, there you go, 1 x aircon unit being researched. Smile
If I have to suffer his electric blanket (he's nesh/I'm peri) then he can have cold toes in July, or I'll sleep in the spare room.🤭

Perihelion · 21/02/2023 18:09

crosspuss seemed to have had a fair amount of rain in Edinburgh. So bored of muddy dog walks

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 21/02/2023 19:12

It's supposed to rain first thing tomorrow!! Shock
I may have to go outside in PJs, in the dark and dance a bit. Grin
