We need to talk about the Weather and the potential for extreme heat - PART 2

Old thread: www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat

The old thread was started when models started to introduce model runs with temperatures of 40c several days in advance of when the record breaking heat wave arrived. We chatted about the idea that this has never been seen before in the UK and linked it back to climate change. Meteorologists and weather enthusiasts were horrified when these models actually verified and across the UK record breaking temperatures were seen. We spoke about the risks to infrastructure and health.

Weve also talked about the near drought conditions in parts of southern
England and East Anglia.

We discussed comparisons to 1976 and showed that although 1976 was hot for a prolonged period of time and was extremely dry, reaching back into 1975, that the UK was anomalously warm compared to elsewhere. In contrast, the July 22 heat wave happened amongst a background of extreme heat across Europe and elsewhere. In 1976 the highest recorded temperature was 35.9c, this year it was 40.3c

This thread is a continuation of that discussion.

Disclaimer: I'm a weather enthusiast, not a professional meteorologist. As such, please refer to the Met Office for reliable forecasts.

Looking forward, GFS, supported by several members of the GEFS ensembles show the potential for another heatwave from around the 9th August in the south and Midlands. Nothing as extreme as the July heatwave, but instead introduces several days of above 30c heat with some showing temperatures into the mid or high 30s. At the moment, there isn't sufficient model consensus to say that this is a likely outcome. I'm flagging this as a potential scenario, but not yet an actual forecast.

Photos are a couple of stats from the met office with regards to the dry situation in July.

I think we're talking at cross purposes Kitten

I would really like disposable barbecues removed from sale. Ditto fireworks but that's a whole separate rant.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/08/2022 16:14

I expect so Emma I'm clearly still in doom lecture mode! Sorry!

33c outside, 28c inside. Taken to lying on a reclining garden chair typing with one finger.

The cat has given up

Disposable bbq are ok in the right place. Ie: your own back yard. For those who don't have anywhere to store a proper one. Using one in specific locations should be banned. Or in certain conditions.

Anyway, still hotter out than in. Another couple of hours until windows open.

PeloAddict · 11/08/2022 16:26

I wanted to do some spin classes this week (at home) but not sure if that's wise...

SquirrelSoShiny · 11/08/2022 16:28

Marking place. Love your threads @OhYouBadBadKitten Flowers

BlackeyedSusan · 11/08/2022 16:28

Going to come over all three Yorkshire men...

28 degrees, I'd love 28 degrees

28 is the highest I feel comfortable.

Boy jumped ship and gone to sit in the shared garden.

AnyFucker · 11/08/2022 16:30

34.5 degrees in Manchester and rising

29 degrees inside despite best efforts

Thank God on days off now ( NHS sweatbox with full PPE and no air con). This summer is actually ruining my health.

stillherenow · 11/08/2022 17:03

Inside I'm finding it more bearable than when high humidity. I couldn't tolerate outside though !

BatshitCrazyWoman · 11/08/2022 17:06

I feel like I sat on the hottest Jubilee Line train ever just now. I really can't cope with much more (same again tomorrow 🫤)

FourTeaFallOut · 11/08/2022 17:40

The living room - not the coldest room in the house, just the one with the thermostat, is 27.8c. I'm in the N.E - I was wearing a jumper last week - I'm not built for this shit.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/08/2022 17:48

Not the hottest room in the house 🙄

stillherenow · 11/08/2022 18:44

I had to give someone my bank account number earlier and my first attempt was a collection of numbers that bore no relation to the real number . I blamed the heat !

stillherenow · 11/08/2022 18:45

Saw 3 separate people walking dogs on an errand run I just did - 33 degrees. Do some people just not connect with the world at all?

FatherJacksBrick · 11/08/2022 18:47

My next door neighbours have just lit a BBQ. On their bone dry grass. Next to my fence and shed. Off to water my side of it down. 😡😡

Darktimes35 · 11/08/2022 18:52

Cambridgeshire. It’s going to be 33 tomorrow. I’m exhausted. I can’t sleep and I feel ill. Kids with disabilities who are really struggling with the heat.

bellac11 · 11/08/2022 19:25

I think I say this on every thread about the heat

At night, you cover yourself in a damp towel or damp sheet, you aim the fan at you and you'll be shivering in no time.

Since I read about this (it was someone remiscing about their childhood in Australia when they lived under tin roofs and had no air con), I never struggle at night now.

RayneDance · 11/08/2022 19:41

Why aren't there immediate public announcement about fires?

Absolutely no BBQ?

No Chinese lanterns...no X y z?

megletthesecond · 11/08/2022 20:38

ray no idea. Surely they could pull together some tv and radio public announcements. Don't drop cigarettes, don't light fireworks etc.

WingBingo · 11/08/2022 20:39

I’m also suffering hot flushes right now so proper struggling. Even been in the sea today to cool down.

it was like a lukewarm bath and still lovely.

permanently covered in sweat and I am in and out of the shower.

FatherJacksBrick · 11/08/2022 20:45

I swear my house is hotter this evening than it was when we had the bonkers temperature a few weeks ago.

That's probably my fault though, went out for work this am and forgot to close windows/pull blinds.

CrunchyCarrot · 11/08/2022 21:10

This is the part of day I dread most - evening and night - our bedroom is the hottest room in the house. Last night I couldn't sleep so ended up online and listening to a live podcast on virology! Eventually got to bed just before 3, only to be woken by the cat at about 5. Meanwhile our one surviving kitty decamps to the great outdoors for hours, no doubt under the great shady trees nearby, then comes back about 7 pm and flops down on the cool stone paving.

Don't forget to put water bowls out for birds and insects if safe to do so, they are thirsty too!

It might also be how the building holds heat? The block I'm in has effing cladding on top of the mad insulation so once the heat is in, it's in. So each heatwave, it gets worse.

So crazy. Should be banned along with disposables. Just like a hosepipe ban.
