We need to talk about the Weather and the potential for extreme heat - PART 2

Old thread: www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat

The old thread was started when models started to introduce model runs with temperatures of 40c several days in advance of when the record breaking heat wave arrived. We chatted about the idea that this has never been seen before in the UK and linked it back to climate change. Meteorologists and weather enthusiasts were horrified when these models actually verified and across the UK record breaking temperatures were seen. We spoke about the risks to infrastructure and health.

Weve also talked about the near drought conditions in parts of southern
England and East Anglia.

We discussed comparisons to 1976 and showed that although 1976 was hot for a prolonged period of time and was extremely dry, reaching back into 1975, that the UK was anomalously warm compared to elsewhere. In contrast, the July 22 heat wave happened amongst a background of extreme heat across Europe and elsewhere. In 1976 the highest recorded temperature was 35.9c, this year it was 40.3c

This thread is a continuation of that discussion.

Disclaimer: I'm a weather enthusiast, not a professional meteorologist. As such, please refer to the Met Office for reliable forecasts.

Looking forward, GFS, supported by several members of the GEFS ensembles show the potential for another heatwave from around the 9th August in the south and Midlands. Nothing as extreme as the July heatwave, but instead introduces several days of above 30c heat with some showing temperatures into the mid or high 30s. At the moment, there isn't sufficient model consensus to say that this is a likely outcome. I'm flagging this as a potential scenario, but not yet an actual forecast.

Photos are a couple of stats from the met office with regards to the dry situation in July.

Currently 31.6 in my living room in Cheshire, I'm so pleased that tomorrow is the last really hot day!

I recommend Vodka.

So do I usually, but I'm starting to feel a bit nauseous.

I clearly have no idea what I'm talking about with drought orders.. I'll create a bench for the feeling crap, spouting crap people and take my space on it.

Cheshire here too. Counting down the hours. Hopefully the last night of sleeping downstairs.

I decided to read the drought order document yesterday (it's quite long, 100+ pages). The 3 levels are:

Hosepipe ban - although that's not actually its name, actually called a temporary use ban
Drought order - needs permission
Extreme drought order - most companies say they will never use this

Never worry, I'll mix some drinks!

yes, I have a feeling London won't feel much different till Monday night and my flat might go to 24 by Wednesday night if I'm lucky.

My neighbours were saying there should have been a hosepipe ban ages ago. I agree. They are creating a crisis.

I said that it's like not buying a new bottle of milk until there's only a spoonful left in the old bottle and it's 2am and you'd kill for a cuppa. There's sludge that's been lying in pipe work that will cause problems now

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/08/2022 22:37

Bring out those drinks @EmmaH2022

I've made frozen watermelon daiquiris.

That looks amazing and refreshing!

FlagsFiend · 13/08/2022 22:50

Why does it sometimes stay warm overnight and sometimes not?

I used to think it was cloud related - in winter clouds seem to make it warmer at night, but there are definitely no clouds around now and it is still warm even though it's dark, but not as warm as it was at night a few weeks ago. I tried looking it up on the internet and it told me that tropical nights in the uk are due to being near large bodies of water like the sea which trap the heat, but there isn't a large body of water near me at all...

BlackeyedSusan · 14/08/2022 01:44

But possibly lots of concrete and buildings radiating heat picked up in the day. And the ground is probably quite warm as well as it is dry.

And I expect layers of atmosphere keep heat in...something about that heat dome in Canada last year.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/08/2022 07:25

Flags it can be down to a couple of things. One of the main ones though is how hot the general air mass is and how that compares to the heat coming from the sun heating things up during the day if you see what I mean. Cloud can be a factor too - they can help keep a lid on temperatures over night.

V hot for this early. Not just here, outside.

nottalot · 14/08/2022 07:37

I woke up at 4am this morning and went out for a long walk, it was lovely. So "cold" that I had to wear a light jacket 🥳

Few more days. Just a few more days 🤞🤞

BlackeyedSusan · 14/08/2022 08:14

Had the windows open all night and got it down to...

...27.5 degrees in the coolest downstairs! Upstairs hotter!

It did not dip down past 19 overnight according to the forecast.

Like me, you are a south west. I am never buying a place that faces one way again. Okay I might have to. In which case, it will be north.

Im a tad hysterical. Should probably come off MN. Don’t really want to go cinema but how else to escape?

FlagsFiend · 14/08/2022 08:28

That's helpful, thanks. I've just read an article on air masses in the met office website and some news stories on heat domes now I knew what to search for!

FlagsFiend · 14/08/2022 08:31

@EmmaH2022 trip to a local supermarket, spend a long time choosing in the fridge/freezer section. If it has a cafe sit in there for a bit.

BlackeyedSusan · 14/08/2022 09:01

Watch the three hour parking limit though.

BlackeyedSusan · 14/08/2022 09:02

Flat is great in winter though as I rarely need heating.

BlackeyedSusan · 14/08/2022 09:05

Though if I had a choice then I would have a flat with shutters/canopy over the windows for this weather.

I adjust to the heat if it comes on gradually to a certain point. But hot grumpy kids is no fun. Especially if one wears tracky bottoms in this heat. (And shorts in winter)

Have to walk there though. Hate supermarkets too.

my flat also has a very low heating bill but cancelled out by the cooling bill!

Breeze, there's breeze and cloud in South Devon.

👍
