General discussion is www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat but I wanted this to be seen by as many people as possible.

It's hard to imagine how different it will be tomorrow. Some people seem to be talking about how hot it is already but here in London it's just a normal summer day. Very warm but not unremarkable. I'll be working outside so have water, a hat and will wear loose linen trousers and a shirt. It should be manageable but am not looking forward to my train journey, especially on the way home, as it's not air conditioned.

Really? Must depend where you are and your tolerance. I’m also in London and today is too hot for us to be out for long. It’s hot where we are, not “very warm”. No breeze, no relief from it. Despite all mitigations the house is 25 degrees in its coolest spot (downstairs, in the hall with no direct light). Adding ten degrees is going to be unbearable outside; pretty sure the house will be hellish too.

TokyoSushi · 17/07/2022 18:04

Currently 'only' 29 in Cheshire, it feels unbelievably hot! I can't really imagine how it's going to feel tomorrow!

The lesson we should have learnt from covid is that kids in school are safer than home.

As someone who home educated my DC I take issue with that assertion.

Why do you take issue with it?

Just because it may not apply to your children specifically doesn’t make it an offensive or incorrect statement.

It is an incorrect statement because most kids are safer at home in certain circumstances, the fact that a small percentage are not is not reason to make a sweeping statement.

howshouldibehave · 17/07/2022 18:22

I think the DfE should have said that parents can choose to send their child in or choose to keep them at home Monday/Tuesday with an authorised absence. That would give parents the choice and drastically reduced numbers of children left in the classroom to keep the heat down there.

Notonthestairs · 17/07/2022 18:28

DD's SN school have given a choice.
DS's Secondary haven't given a choice but they can wear their own clothes.

Yes, best to just ignore the figures (that most people would be stunned by) and just be huffy because “my kids are fine”.

It isn't about being 'huffy' it is the fact the statement is factually incorrect. Most kids are safer at home with 1-1 care. Some kids are most definitely safer in school in almost all situations barring flood or fire.

The school where I work is doing precisely this. We anticipate that numbers in attendance will be very low but we won't know until the morning.

Stuntbubbles I think we must be lucky. I'm in a London suburb and it's a glorious warm afternoon with a slight breeze. Lovely weather. Today. Maybe not tomorrow!

peridito · 17/07/2022 18:52

@Essie274 I have had success with draping towels /sheeting over an open window edge .Secured by cliping material on to a skirt/trouser hanger with the hook over the window .

It really does make a difference to cover the outside of the window if you can .Although my method means you'll need to remove the hanger so that you can shut the window when it's in full sun .

Also if you have a room not in use close window and the door during the day/when hottest .

peridito · 17/07/2022 18:56

A slight breeze makes an immense difference .SE London here and ,yes it's bearable .Even in our upper floor flat .

In 2019 it definitely not bearable .

Thank you. I'm going to have a go at flinging towels out of the window and hanging them on the outside and see if I can make them hold (I fear I may lose a couple to the trees and bushes below and give my neighbours a laugh in the process).

LimesandClementines · 17/07/2022 19:08

It hit 31 today here (apple weather temp actually matched the local weather stations recording) but it's been mostly cloudy and there's been a breeze so it's been just about bearable. Apple weather is saying 39 for Tuesday and I was hoping that was an over exaggeration but maybe not as it was spot on today!

princesscacao · 17/07/2022 19:08

Please show me the figures that demonstrate "most" children are less safe at home than they are at school.

peridito · 17/07/2022 19:09

what sort of windows do you have Essie ? Sash, casement ,those multi position ones ?

peridito · 17/07/2022 19:10

Could you tie them on somehow ?Knot the corner of the material with something ? Pyjama cord ,shoe laces ,bungee ??

Rowgtfc72 · 17/07/2022 19:12

Dds school have said mon/Tues attendance is optional and non attendance will be authorised. They'll be in pe kits anyway.
We're east coast and secondary school.

Some schools locally have said that, but others are still holding sports day tomorrow afternoon!

It would have been so much better if the Dfe had said that’s what schools should do, rather than heads all having to make their own decision and parents not knowing what to think.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/07/2022 19:27

Latest mini update from the models:

Its probably quite unlikely that tomorrow anywhere will see 40c officially. But it still seems likely that the UK record will fall. On Tuesday, the record will almost certainly fall (again!) and it is probable that 40c will be seen and rather likely in multiple locations I think.

meditrina · 17/07/2022 19:36

When you say multiple locations, which areas are the possibles?

LadyFlumpalot · 17/07/2022 20:37

I've just had a (very) brief thunderstorm in the South West! Fingers crossed it comes back for round two!

WakeyCakeyHeart · 17/07/2022 20:45

It's cooled down considerably here in South Hampshire, far less oppressive and some dark looking clouds overhead. If it stays like this tomorrow I'll be happy :-)

LadyFlumpalot · 17/07/2022 20:47

Please, please, please OYBBK... could the onset of storms mean the weather is breaking and tomorrow/Tuesday won't be as bad as predicted?
