General discussion is www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat but I wanted this to be seen by as many people as possible.

@OhYouBadBadKitten can you tell me about the humidity & breeze.

i am in the SE (close to London but not London) we have a breeze today which is making the current 29 degrees bareable - if there due to be a breeze tomorrow & Tuesday??

or not and that’s why it’s so dangerous?

i have to work (nights) kids have to go to school and I have 2 large dogs I’m worried about!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 17/07/2022 16:18

Going to be 42 on Tuesday near me. Dreading it🥺

Tiggertum · 17/07/2022 16:19

@Piggywaspushed - resilience is one of my pet hate words! Also hate the way it’s now applied to kids in schools as well - resolve is one thing but this kids need greater resilience/ celebrating the kids that can naturally cope as having ‘resilience’ and somehow implying the ones who can’t are less. properly gets me, particularly primary ages kids.

anyway back to the weather!

Any advice on what I can cover the windows with that don't have blinds/curtains? (Also don't have curtain rails or any obvious way of hanging things).

We recently moved house and need a lot of re-plastering so haven't bothered putting curtain rails up in most rooms besides DC's.

We have a newborn so really worried about keeping him cool.

Could you stick paper / cardboard or tin foil up at the windows with blue tack or sellotape?

HappyMediocreTime · 17/07/2022 16:34

Tin foil can reflect too much sun onto the glass (potentially cracking windows) so I wouldn't do that. Paper maybe.

user1471462115 · 17/07/2022 16:39

Try a couple of layers of newspaper sellotaped to the window frame and itself. It is working very nicely for us today.

mcallister · 17/07/2022 16:41

It's hard to imagine how different it will be tomorrow. Some people seem to be talking about how hot it is already but here in London it's just a normal summer day. Very warm but not unremarkable. I'll be working outside so have water, a hat and will wear loose linen trousers and a shirt. It should be manageable but am not looking forward to my train journey, especially on the way home, as it's not air conditioned.

Tiggertum · 17/07/2022 16:44

I agree mcallister. Its quite pleasant today with the slight breeze and some high cloud cover at times. And the weekend so nothing to do!

i went in my attic room earlier which is always a furnace and thought the temp it is now will prob be cool for tomorrow.

RampantIvy · 17/07/2022 16:47

Quite a lot of local food businesses are closing for the next couple of days.

TooHot2022 · 17/07/2022 16:49

The forecast near us (outer London) has been downgraded to Amber now. Was 39c (Feels like 35c) Now 34/32.
Should be much more manageable.

Has it? I haven’t heard that. That would really great.

If you've still got any moving boxes these are effective in the window if you flatten and cut to size.

RagzRebooted · 17/07/2022 16:56

Met office and BBC weather seem to disagree on whether Monday or Tuesday will be gotter here (SE, 15 miles inland) but neither have us above 35. Accuweather have us lower, at 32 Monday and 29 Tuesday. Not sure if there's been a change in the forecast?
Apparently currently 26 here, but like PP we have a breeze which has made a massive difference.

I hung towels over the windows, which helped this morning when the sun was on the bedroom.

Same, I wonder if the models now showing the core of the heat is going to be further north? DH was saying forecast has got worse in some places.

Shocking how far north the temperatures are forecast to be so high. My long term plan was to move to Shropshire partly because we are SE now and I don't cope well with heat. DH now saying we will have to go to Scotland instead!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 17/07/2022 17:00

I’m bloody jealous of those at 35 degrees or so😭

This is Sheffield🥵

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/07/2022 17:08

There has been no update to the area covered by the met office red warning area @TooHot2022 They change the 'issued' to 'updated' when there are changes in anyway and spell out the reason for the change.

I think rather than the more southern areas in the red area being downgraded, it is more that the northern areas have been upgraded in the models. I'd ignore accuweather, it isn't.

On Tuesday there will be lower temperatures than that in London.
😁

alllo · 17/07/2022 17:11

Thanks for this thread @OhYouBadBadKitten. I always appreciate your weather work. Smile

Finding this a bit of a struggle already so I'm a bit worried about the next few days - thank goodness it won't last too long.

RedWingBoots · 17/07/2022 17:12

I'm still in the red zone on Monday and Tuesday though. I was hoping to be in the part of London and SE that wasn't.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/07/2022 17:20

@alllo You're welcome! I'm finding it a bit stifling too today though it is 'only' 29 and I'm good with heat!

Wednesday still may be pretty warm/hot in parts of East Anglia for those there looking for relief.

It will be interesting to see what temperatures are reached over the next few days, especially after all the scare and panic mongering.
It's as if thousands of people going on holiday do not go seeking places where temperatures of 40°C are not regularly exceeded.
It's as if 1976 never happened!

1976 vs 2022 and this is only the June data.

The death rate in London during the heatwave was up 30%. This heatwave is shorter and sharper, death rates will rise but not to that level.

In parts of the country it will be 15 degrees above normal July temps. Not many countries would find that comfortable.

Unfortunately the vulnerable people in this country do not live in hotels.

Thanks to my weather station 🤣 i can confirm I've been bang on the Met office temps all day. They're forecasting me 36 on mon and tue so I'm expecting that or v near.

I am now sat in my thermally blacked out kitchen with iced drink, cooling cloth and fan. Satisfied with my prepping!

l avoid high temperatures, hate them. And it’s forecast to be 42 near me.

We are inundated with boxes, mostly still packed Grin - might spur me on to unpack a few more to flatten them for the windows for tomorrow. Thank you.

princesscacao · 17/07/2022 17:59

The lesson we should have learnt from covid is that kids in school are safer than home.

As someone who home educated my DC I take issue with that assertion.
