General discussion is www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat but I wanted this to be seen by as many people as possible.

Please, please, please OYBBK... could the onset of storms mean the weather is breaking and tomorrow/Tuesday won't be as bad as predicted?

Sorry @LadyFlumpalot Sad

Just flicked through some of the southern UK airport forecasts, which in some cases cover until tomorrow AM and and in other cases (e.g. Heathrow and Cardiff) go right through until tomorrow evening and FWIW there's no sign of a breakdown/rain/thunderstorms...all remains very settled (to save somebody asking - the UK airport forecasts don't generally give a prediction of temperatures).

PestorPeston · 17/07/2022 21:07

I think the thunderstorms were quite localised to the SW.
The temperature just plummeted by 5 degrees in half an hour.

When you say multiple locations, which areas are the possibles?

Anywhere in a stripe from London, up through Cambridgeshire, through Lincolnshire and into Yorkshire. Perhaps Manchester too. Maybe more central Midlands and southern areas too, but less likely.
Basically the red warnings cover it well.

We hit 30C here today and it's still 25.6C now. I'm taking the 'one day at a time' attitude at the moment and thinking 'one down, hopefully it''s just 2 more to go before it cools down.'

Netweather's thoughts on the next few days.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/07/2022 21:37

Those are stunning photos @LadyFlumpalot

Operation Cool Down ongoing here. Every window wide open, fans on the go in the bedrooms to try and shift the heat out.

Going back to 1976, no warnings, no weather maps made to look like volcanic eruption, No days off of school or work, if and didn’t a famous tennis player win Wimbledon in 41 degrees? What’s gone so wrong with us.

It’s never been 41 degrees before, so no. The highest it got in 1976 was 35.9.

In your case memory, Wimbledon has never got to 41 degrees

georgedawes · 17/07/2022 21:51

Why do people keep posting that it's been 40+ degrees in the UK before? Completely bizarre - can you not use Google?

youkiddingme · 17/07/2022 21:51

29 here atm at 10pm - but due to fall a bit now until early morning then go back up and a fair bit higher. I've managed to keep the house down to 23 and hoping to get up early and open some windows before the heat builds up again.

WakeyCakeyHeart · 17/07/2022 21:58

It's now raining in Hampshire :-) Utter joy :-)))

l was 12 in 76. Nothings ‘gone wrong’ technology and life have moved forward and progressed. Why don’t you try moving with it?

Yeah 1976 was so laid back the government appointed a minister for the drought. And plenty of people did complain. A lot of customers in the dhop I worked in complained a lot. And it was on the news every single night. A lot of rose tinted hindsight going on about 1976.

I am so bloody glad we moved when we did! I’m in the red bit but we have an old thatched cottage which is cold inside in the heat, I’ve had normal pyjamas and duvet in the recent weather. Old house would be a furnace.

We’ll gloss ove the fact we will freeze this winter with ice on the single glazing and just focus on the fact we won’t melt next week instead 😂

S@Thursday37 Do you need to soak the thatched roof?

WinterMusings · 17/07/2022 23:26

drum123 · 15/07/2022 12:20

Haven't read the whole thread so apologies if this tip has been shared already. Fill a suitable container, like a hot water bottle, with water and put it in the freezer. At bedtime, wrap it in a tea towel, or hand towel and use it to co your feet during the night. It's a life saver for me!

@drum123

But DO NOT use it as a HOT water bottle afterwards as it might explode & will almost definitely leak!!!

Erm, no?!

Rowgtfc72 · 18/07/2022 04:26

Just gone 4am and I've woken up to 20°. I work in a frozen food factory so need to put my fleecy jogging bottoms on for work. 5° at work, not looking forward to coming out to 34 at 2pm!
