General discussion is www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat but I wanted this to be seen by as many people as possible.

I'm just watching the tour de France. It's 40 degrees there today and they are riding 150km or more.

Plasmodesmata · 17/07/2022 13:26

I am not suggesting this is a good idea, btw.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/07/2022 13:32

Model update:
Tomorrow it looks likely that we will see temperatures break the UK record.
Tuesday it looks likely that that record will be broken and that some areas, perhaps even in Yorkshire, will see temperatures of 40c+.

I got up at 6 to close the windows and curtains to keep the cool air in

Windflower92 · 17/07/2022 13:34

Can I ask a stupid question? DDs age 1 and 3 are due to get their chickenpox jabs tomorrow at 2pm. About a 20 minute drive but in a car park with little shade. One of the side effects of the jab is potentially a fever. Is it a stupid idea to get this done during a heatwave? We're in Portsmouth so predicted high but not the highest.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/07/2022 13:36

@Windflower92 I would take advice from the healthcare provider who is doing them on that.

We've put some white Sheets up and I think at the moment rhats working well. The sun hasn't hit that part of the house but just wanted to let people know as it's been easy to wedge the Sheets in the window etc, cheap and easy to do.

Oh lord re ; Christmas dexs melting! I've got wax candles up there as well

We’re in the red zone. It’s bonkers schools are still opening.

i don’t think I’m sending mine in.

I disagree with this

Keep your dc home as you wish but it shouldn’t be forced on all

It only takes a parent needing to work and leaving young dc in a vulnerable situation

Essie274 · 17/07/2022 13:53

Any advice on what I can cover the windows with that don't have blinds/curtains? (Also don't have curtain rails or any obvious way of hanging things).

We recently moved house and need a lot of re-plastering so haven't bothered putting curtain rails up in most rooms besides DC's.

We have a newborn so really worried about keeping him cool.

SpindleInTheWind · 17/07/2022 13:57

I've jammed my garden parasol down the back of a chair so I can cast shade (in the old-fashioned sense) over one of my small frog ponds to give the little blighters some respite in at least one corner of of the garden.

Frogs need to absorb water through their skin and it keeps evaporating ... I'm very fond of my frogs.

I'd have Calpol and a cold cloth on standby, @Windflower92 (if you're happy to give Calpol).

MeridianGrey · 17/07/2022 14:10

@Windflower92 in your shoes I would cancel as such young children are likely to struggle with the heat even without the extra stress on their systems. I think the gp would understand .

I'm just watching the tour de France. It's 40 degrees there today and they are riding 150km or more.

FWIW that's a almost local stage for us, and they are heading right an area which is covered by our current Canicule (heatwave) warning..

vigilance.meteofrance.fr/fr/canicule

Some of the teams end up in fairly basic hotels for night stops and restdays so hopefully the team management has brought plenty of mobile A/C units for night time use.

Fingers crossed it'll be a few degrees lower, in the mid-thirties for Tuesday and Wednesday's mountain stage...still going to be darned hot though..

MeridianGrey · 17/07/2022 14:38

Just heard on the radio that the gritters will be out tonight spreading sand to keep roads cool. It’s not April fools day is it?

velvetvixen · 17/07/2022 14:43

Gritters sensible precaution.

WakeyCakeyHeart · 17/07/2022 14:54

Cloudy and cooler here on the South Coast today, way more comfortable than yesterday. It's much more humid too. Temperatures will be rising over 15 degrees by tomorrow if what is predicted happens.

felineweird · 17/07/2022 14:55

Hi all, please could someone advise if my children would be better off at school tomorrow in gingham dress 63%viscose 37% polyester or PE kit cotton T-shirt (but not especially thin) and black cotton shorts? TIA for any words of wisdom

It was 28/29 here last week and DD wore her summer dress (60%cotton/40%polyester) and she ended up with a mild heat rash so I’d go for cotton t-shirt personally.

Would you prefer them to just let roads melt?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 17/07/2022 16:06

Who needs to stop hysterics and drama? The Met Office, the UKHSA? the RAC? can see nothing here that hasn't been raised as a potential and significantly likely issue by them.

I’m finding some are very quick to play the hysteria card. I’ve been accused on another thread of being a ‘bloody drama queen’ for saying nothing more than ‘a red weather warning means a risk to life’.

And it's a risk to life to healthy people.

However we are just being hysterical.

Piggywaspushed · 17/07/2022 16:14

Its' become a favourite MN word. It is terribly misogynistic and I hate it. See also doom mongering .

I also hate resilience when applied to illness, and extreme weather. It's actually pretty irresponsible to tell people to tough it out, implying that if you succumb you were somehow a bit lacking in grit.
