Storm Eunice

This thread covers the expected severe weather on Friday - named Storm Eunice by the met office. At the moment there is great uncertainty, so the met office have put out a very wide yellow weather warning. It looks likely that some regions within the warning area will see gusts of 60-70mph inland, with a small chances of inland gusts above 80mph. The storm also carries the potential for some blizzards, but again there is currently considerable uncertainty.

A separate thread exists for Storm Dudley which is expected Wednesday/Thursday.

I've finished work now, so time for another update.

In no particular order of models:

Icon - brings in gusts of around 90mph through the Bristol channel, through Sussex and over the peak district. Widspread gusts of 70-80 across southern areas, particularly central southern areas and into east Anglia.

Arpege - similar but doesnt bring it into the Pennines and less severe through the Bristol Channel.

UKV - rough through the BC, but a bit less so for the rest of the south. Still widespread gusts of 70-80mph Does bring severe gusts back up to Peak District or so,

UK Met - 80-90 through the BC and along the south coast out to Kent. Same for Suffolk and parts of Essex. Widespread gusts of 70-80mph across the south. Brings in high winds further north again too, so I'm expecting to see an extension of the amber area I think.

Very rough timings, the storm may come in faster or slower. Do not use these timings for trying to beat the storm- Starts to pick up around 5am for the SW by 8am Dorset 10am Kent
Generally peak storm for central England is 11am-3pm.

Note this is not like a squall line. Its not a case of 'oh the wind has stopped I can go out again'. Wind is 'lumpy' and comes in squalls and quieter periods.

School closed here in Dorset.

HemanOrSheRa · 17/02/2022 18:27

I'm in Bristol, close to the north somerset border. It's very calm here. Just been out with the dogs. My rommie ex street dog would NOT come inside. She was sat in the garden staring her thousand yard stare, snorting and sniffing. I'm sure she can smell the storm.

Ahhbiscuits · 17/02/2022 18:28

Neighbours still got trampoline out, two football nets and a whole opened up toolbox on top of their shed 🤦🏼‍♀️

Furries · 17/02/2022 18:28

@NothingIsWrong - that’s certainly what happened to me. Gable wall collapsed during Storm Kate a few years ago. Insurance wouldn’t pay out and I had to remortgage - I’m still smarting from that now! So I get very twitchy when weather like this is incoming.

Doghairismyglitter · 17/02/2022 18:30

Eerily calm in Cornwall too and I have suddenly developed a splitting migraine, somethings coming

nannynick · 17/02/2022 18:31

Weather station in the Isles of Scilly is online... www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/IISLES8

Glanmore, IE is also online, though not showing a lot of wind at the moment.
www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/IGLANM13

Are those locations likely to be where wind speeds will pick up first?

Same here, I've brought loads in and the big garden toys I've secured- worried about how much of their stuff is going to fly into our house! We were chatting earlier and they said ah its just going to be windy nought to worry about.

Weird isn't it? It's far calmer than normal!
GloriaSmud · 17/02/2022 18:41

@Maireas - Yes, it goes slightly reddish where the stronger wind speeds are and you can click on the box in the bottom corner to change units e.g. knots, km per hour etc

@withiceplease - it does looking at the wind map but if you look here and maybe choose the sea level chart and use the arrows to move the time along, it shows the storm moves along the southern coast of Ireland, which is how the metoffice arrives at its weather warnings.

Timeturnerplease · 17/02/2022 18:49

Thanks for the update re Sussex! Just sent DP out to tie down the trampoline and put all the toys in the (worryingly rickety) shed. Have filled up preschool drink bottles with boiled water for baby bottles + got two 2L Evians from the village shop.

Most importantly, have located the battery operated white noise machines in case the power goes. Neither of mine will sleep through ANYTHING without white noise. Priorities!

Lockheart · 17/02/2022 18:53

Well we've (in London) moved our barbecue and all of our bins and garden pots into what we hope is the most sheltered part of the garden and tried to weigh down anything lighter. I don't think there's anything loose in the garden which we haven't tucked out of the way (we hope), although I'm worried about the fences and the back gate.

I'm getting up extra early to get to the office well before 8am. Will ride the storm out at work! Luckily I have several transport options to get home (train, tube, bus, even taxi if necessary).

Louisianagumbo · 17/02/2022 18:54

@Trytobetoo

Is anyone in Lancashire? Is it incredibly bad there?
I'm in Lancashire. It was forecast to be bad yesterday but apart from a bit of rain in the morning, it was an OK day. (Well, we are in Lancashire so an ok day is a bit breezy with occasional spitting!) A few showers and a little windy today but nothing out of the ordinary.
CharlesChickens · 17/02/2022 18:55

Eerily calm here (coastal W. Wales). I have felt strangely flighty all day and now on the edge of a headache. I am worried, I want to bring the chickens inside, DH thinks they will be fine (they are in a very sheltered position). When is it set to hit us here ?

That must be so awful. Wall tie failure is quite easy to spot and it's not a difficult job to retrofit new ones, as long as you do it before it collapses..

NothingIsWrong · 17/02/2022 18:59

Busy charging All The Things. Phones mostly, I am on call for bad structural things happening tomorrow on various buildings and sites...

HappySonHappyMum · 17/02/2022 19:02

@OhYouBadBadKitten Thank you so much - have bookmarked those sites!

FailureToLurk · 17/02/2022 19:03

South Wales here, red alert area.

I've been out the garden and secured what I can and moved anything loose in to the shed.

I've got candles, lighter, battery radio, charging all devices and power banks as we speak.

I'm not sure what else I'm missing 😬

ListenLinda · 17/02/2022 19:05

West Yorks here and in the yellow area. Advised to WFH home tomorrow. Have a relative flying into Manchester tomorrow at lunchtime Shock on a 6 week visit from Aus. I feel for you all in the SE, I hope you all stay safe and you don’t suffer too much damage to properties.

colouringindoors · 17/02/2022 19:10

Loads of trees down around here last night and we weren't in a warning area!

CatBook · 17/02/2022 19:12

Yes, its been very calm this evening, and did anyone else notice the eerie light before sunset? (N Cornwall). Going to bed early with a film as I suspect we'll have a disturbed night.

RIPWalter · 17/02/2022 19:12

Met office mountain area forecast for tomorrow has finally been published and we are 330m up a mountain in Snowdonia, so covered by this forecast. Looking like 31mph gusting 64 at 300m so should be fun tomorrow, but at least it is a favourable wind directions for us (easterlies generate a localised wind effect and batter the crap out of us) so we should be okay.

Toughest part is going to be working out a days worth of indoor entertainment for DD whose playgroup and preschool has been cancelled. Confused

ifonly4 · 17/02/2022 19:13

I was going to tell DH not to put bins out in the morning, but collections cancelled - no surprise.

HesterShaw1 · 17/02/2022 19:14

There are a lot of us in Cornwall!

Cornwall? I’ve never seen collections cancelled before. Good decision though
