Storm Eunice

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2022 11:57

This thread covers the expected severe weather on Friday - named Storm Eunice by the met office. At the moment there is great uncertainty, so the met office have put out a very wide yellow weather warning. It looks likely that some regions within the warning area will see gusts of 60-70mph inland, with a small chances of inland gusts above 80mph. The storm also carries the potential for some blizzards, but again there is currently considerable uncertainty.

A separate thread exists for Storm Dudley which is expected Wednesday/Thursday.

@HoldOnToYourHat

You'd think so, wouldn't you, *@FourTeaFallOut* ? Not according to our school. Most of the kids travel into the town to school from outlying villages and farms by bus - some double-deckers - on winding, tree-lined country lanes. England, BTW.
Balls to that, don't they have a cold coming on? Wink
billysboy · 17/02/2022 16:02

Waiting for the bbc to send film crews etc to show us wind and rain

Maireas · 17/02/2022 16:03

There'll be some poor correspondent in a North Face jacket with the hood up, trying to shout over the wind and pointing at waves.

crackofdoom · 17/02/2022 16:04

Aaaaand here come the school closure notifications in S. Cornwall, and a good thing too.

Beryl Strip surely a Staffie would be one of the safest dogs to have in a high wind?! Pity the chihuahua , whippet and saluki owners! 😆

I love those reports.

They'll be at Dawlish by the railway line or Porthleven by the Institute.

We lost power last night, fortunately just after the football finished otherwise I wouldn’t have heard the end of it. We are preparing for tomorrow by getting the camping stove out of the garage. We are prone to power cuts, the longest was 2 days. It wasn’t due to weather but the result of a local bull using one of the power line posts to scratch his rear end and bringing it down. This caused arcing over nearly half a mile of cabling ( spectacular light show) and it took a while to fix.
There were a number of trees down along our main road (rural lane) and likely to be more tomorrow.
We always have plenty of candles and I have charged the phone power pack. We fill the thermos flasks for hot drinks and hopefully we’ll stay safe.

I hope it isnt as bad as the hurricane in 1987. I remember all the havoc.
My husband nearly died in that storm, had the huge Victorian chimney stack collapse on his bedroom and the bedroom next to his in student digs, it pinned his house mate in the next room to his bed and it took hours for the fire brigade to get his roommate out, all the while with no roof and the neighbours chimney stack swaying in high gusts.
givemeallthecheese · 17/02/2022 16:19

Eek. I have to drive from Leeds to Swansea tomorrow Sad

LesLavandes · 17/02/2022 16:19

Really nervous here in Brighton. I live across road from beach on my own. So much could go wrong but keep safe everyone and remember you and your families are the most important. Your property will be second important

Jasmine5552 · 17/02/2022 16:22

@LostInWales

What are your favourite sites for tracking upcoming events (for the much lower down the understanding order than you)OYBBK? I've ended up on Netweather as my default and I can never remember how or if it's actually reliable.

Will be bringing in my bird feeders at work on Thursday just in case.

Never heard of netweather.
TomAllenWife · 17/02/2022 16:24

Sorry if this has been discussed already but is it going to be as bad as predicted?
I have to get from cardiff to Bristol tomorrow, prepared for diversion of bridges are closed but not sure about my 2pm flight

ATrifleofFun · 17/02/2022 16:28

@TomAllenWife I would be very surprised if your flight isn't cancelled. Gusts of 80mph plus likely at Cardiff and Bristol airports, not likely to be much flying.

MabelMoo23 · 17/02/2022 16:29

@frowner

Warwickshire here, our primary school has forest school in the morning which the teacher said is going ahead, hmm…
We are Worcestershire, my DD has forest school tomorrow morning and it’s just been cancelled, although school itself is still open

Well at the risk of being unhelpful, nobody knows if it's going to be as bad as predicted. Down in Cornwall we're being prepared for the worst I think and the weather forecasts are looking dire as things stand. It doesn't help that the highest winds are due to coincide with a high spring tide either.

Do you 'have' to get from Cardiff to Bristol ? I'd suggest that unless this is truly life and death you should rethink your journey.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 17/02/2022 16:31

@CatBook
Can you tune your car radio into your local radio station (bbc or commercial)? At least you'd know what's going on even if you can't do much about it. 🤦‍♀️

@AppleButter
If they'll lie flat, then I'd tip them upside down with the weight of the wheel above them to pin them down iyswim

Titsywoo · 17/02/2022 16:31

Met office and Netweather just dropped us from 75mph to 68 tomorrow at midday (East Surrey)

TomAllenWife · 17/02/2022 16:32

Well it's not life and death but I guess if I want to be refunded I have to show willing and turn up

Lightning020 · 17/02/2022 16:32

Kayjay your poor husband and his housemate! I was studying legal exec in 1987 and remember nearly parking my TR7 under a tree. I had such a close shave that day.

I guess the only things flying are the things that aren't fixed down properly. Shock

GloriaSmud · 17/02/2022 16:36

@BoreOfWhabylon Worst of the conditions between 9am-12, easing a bit from then onwards, especially from 3pm.

@TomAllenWife I'd avoid travelling. That's all in the metoffices Red Zone and I'm not sure there'll be flights from Bristol tomorrow.

@Jasmine5552 - Netweather

HesterShaw1 · 17/02/2022 16:36
**@HesterShaw1* I think you're further west than me (and @Usernumber5253747293* it is entirely possible that mine and your DC are at the same school) but if you lose power and it's safe to do so, we're main road mid Cornwall and we have two wood burners - it'd be a squeeze but we'd make some room for you!
How sweet! Thank you so much 🥰

GloriaSmud · 17/02/2022 16:39

Wind warning for Saturday from the metoffice.

Belle2210 · 17/02/2022 16:39

@Belle2210

Although I'm not in any weather warning area here in NE Scotland (for a change lately 😂) thought I'd pop onto this thread as I've an interest in weather. With Storm Arwen I've never experienced a storm like it and I'm 35 so been an interesting few months for storms here. I didn't have power for 4 days with friends and ILs off as long as 6 days. Just incase this does get to red warning...

Tips I that I did/wish I'd done:
Take any outdoor pets inside. We had trees fall on our dog kennels. Didn't do much damage thankfully. All of our dogs were already in the house before it hit.
Charge EVERYTHING that's chargeable and get a battery pack if you can.
Know emergency numbers for electric, gas and water suppliers. Have some idea where to get the best phone signal if you're rural.
Torches, batts, candles (remember a lighter or matches. Easy to forget if you don't usually have one)
If you have a wood burner stock up in the room it's in if you've outside wood storage. These are great for heating up some water or food. Alluminum pie trays were great for heating food.
Fill any flasks with boiling water before the storm worsens.
Rake out the camping stove and gas.
Have a hot bath or shower before the storm hits.
Move your car to somewhere away from trees if possible.
Get some bottled water and food that doesn't need cooked/refrigerated. If you've something able to re heat food then have something cooked and good to go.
If the power goes off don't open your fridge or freezer.
Pre Download some movies.
Board games are great.
Hoover and make sure your washing is up to date 😂. Honestly what a midden after only 4 days.
If you WFH send any documents someone might need if you did have a power cut.
If you work out and about trust your instincts and do try and get home before the worst of it. People here had an awful time getting home because of blocked roads.
Get on a local Facebook page/group. Great for knowing where theres hot food vans, leisure centres open for showers etc.

Text updates on powercuts come frequently and aren't always accurate. Will usually say the same or following day.... Definitely wasn't the case here.

Hopefully none of you will need this but handy for any future big storms too 💕.

Thought I'd bump this up a bit for folks who will be getting the worst of the storm 👍
